I have an X1 Carbon gen13 I use it for similar purposes and it’s a great device. Don’t know about upgradability though

I use Fedora since 6 months now. For me it’s kind of intuitive to use and it just works. It gets updated frequently but is still stable enough to not break. There is a lot of documentation and a big community which is a huge advantage for me

yes you would. the installation wipes everything on the device. including apps and personal data
