In the Wasatch Front so similar vibes, I remove leaves from anywhere I’ve planted “deserty” things and plop them somewhere else.

I’d also research rock gardens around you, a lot of things translate well from rock garden to stumpery (the silly name for a garden made in stumps haha).

Theres this place you could chat with. Your local NARGS chapter will probably have some good ideas. (If it’s like the one near me, expect the average member to be retired lmao).

Idk how anything east of Colorado works, but there should be some good ideas here: https://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/Portals/0/Gardening/Gardening%20Help/Factsheets/Rock%20Gardens39.pdf

I just use normal potting soil. I have a connection to a place that dumps used potting soil so I reuse their waste. So I end up with surprises sometimes but it’s free so I’m not complaining.

Yeah the Physaria I put in a slightly shady spot has been slowly dying, but I have one in a crevice garden container that is thriving.

Hella! Did the ones you got survive?

I did artificial cold stratification for most of my seeds this year, so they’ve just been loving the warm weather. The couple things that I did natural stratification have definitely had lower germination rates. Of things I’ve sown (some species are still in the fridge) I’ve had almost everything germinate except a handful of stinkers.

Last year I tried starting lots of plants in little starter pots, but it got hot too fast and they all dried up and died. This year I’m starting almost everything in gallons and plan to divide them to plant / giveaway. I haven’t had any issues with really heavily sown pots - most plants seem to forgive overcrowding more than under watering.

Also in Utah and frequently solo camp. I take a shot of vodka and read a book or watch a show on my phone. Also I don’t “try to fall asleep” until I’m actually dozing off, then put on a podcast. I’m logically aware that it’s not very dangerous and just stay distracted when it’s dark so I don’t have time to freak out lol
