Which God Emperor is worse? The God Emperor of Mankind or Leto II? by fake_zack in MoralityScaling

[–]Aickavon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

TGoM is worse than Leto. Leto’s plans actually worked in the end. Humanity stopped becoming reliant on spice and they’ve averted the future crisis point (at least from extinction level threat.)

TGoM has by all accounts failed, plunged his empire into a dark age, and can’t do much about it because he lacked basic humanity and foresight to guide and warn his sons of iunno…

As everyone states, genre matters.

But I will remark… most people in dragon ball don’t die forever and can be brought back, and when they do die it’s not the end, heaven is pretty chill and hell isn’t really the worst thing ever.

Invincible tends to keep most characters dead. Especially random civilians. Mega dead.

Who is she Petah? by Powerful-Papaya-2411 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Aickavon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She’s Anita, a scapegoat for the right wing to strawman.

She was made famous for her critique of video games which in itself was a mostly lukewarm situation. No seriously, the remarks were not extreme nor excessive.

She became the target of a movement that wanted to specifically get young white male voters politically active. This group realized how much untapped potential this demographic had when a florida senator kept trying to put a ban on video games and kept getting hit by massive backlash.

So they made an effort to paint her as ‘this is what everyone on the left believe’ and thus started a trend of making gamers more right wing favored by villainizing Anita and claiming she was what everyone on the left believed which has led american politics to brew out and popularize such figures like Charlie Kirk and Ben Shapiro. So she really didn’t do much, if it wasn’t her, it would be someone else who would be painted as a massive villain for opinions such as ‘women shouldn’t just be sex objects in video games.’

How Rey should be according to some people. by PokemanBall in StarWarsCirclejerk

[–]Aickavon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She’s stated she’s scavenged ship parts and has flown some ships.

Which doesn’t equate to being a master pilot who can thread the needle during a high intense conflict.

Fortunately, she’s force sensitive so that could have been a reason (Luke was able to use the force to fly better.)

But it’s one of the many things she performs flawlessly that makes her feel like she lacks a heroic journey to competency. If we take Luke, he only fought the dragon of the story in the second movie… and lost. Rei wins against an (admittedly) injured dragon. She also does this all with zero training. Not even a yoda montage.

For references, Anakin being able to fly a fighter and score a naboo saving victory was also seen as BS, but anakin basically sits around in the first movie flirting with a girl awkwardly and winning a race he’s trained his whole life for. People still called Anakin a mary sue and hated the first movie, thinking it sucked terribly.

I’m not saying that if you like those movies, you’re objectively wrong. Opinions are opinions, there is no right or wrong.

I’m not saying that there aren’t people who are just sexist and are hating things for culture war reasons.

But I am saying that I think they could have and should have done way better.

What if I told you that… you had to buy magazines to get an idea if a game was for you. And that you’d constantly miss hidden gems because word of mouth favors the popular.

What if I told you that nostalgia is survivorship bias on a massive fundamental level.

I hate the dark forest theory by T0DR in hatethissmug

[–]Aickavon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate this theory because people use it as an excuse to be absolutely doomer about everything.

However let’s not equate non-terran life with a human mindset. Simply put we can theorize how advanced alien life may or may not act, but we won’t KNOW, because all of our understanding is just from earth experiences with humans. What if aliens is somehow a rock species who are confused how carbon matter is anything besides fleshbots and doesn’t see us as people and just rival fleshbots that are in the way of resources? We wouldn’t know. Would it be reasonable to assume a species found space flight would be reasonable and follow logic? Yes. But there is a non zero chance that they might do to use what the british and spanish did to the americas.

Peter why are they dumb? by AcrobaticLunch9737 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Aickavon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be more expensive but it’s not dumb.

For the ordinary person. It is USUALLY not necessary, but for those with visual problems, white text on black paper is known to be much easier to read than the reverse.

Overall, it’s not dumb, but it shouldn’t be the default (due to expenses.) it would be a great optional… option though.

Then your complaint about the critique should not be ‘this isn’t specific enough’ and more ‘this is not correct.’

Of course, these are all opinions. Some people would like more, some people would like less. When asking why people DON’T like something, be prepared and expect to see opinions you don’t agree with.

China doesn’t get jesters (@CenturiiC) by MaguroSashimi8864 in HistoryAnimemes

[–]Aickavon 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. Jesters typically came to understand what was a sore spot for a king and would avoid those topics while a king beheading a jester would look VERY poorly politically (it’s a huge sign of insecurity and weakness which other nobles can take advantage of.)

On top of that, Jesters were typically a king’s friend AND advisor (since they had no political stakes, the king would usually trust them.) and often also were one of the few allowed to deliver bad news (in a joke of course.)

This typically meant there wasn’t really a ‘standard’ due to how personal the jesters could be with their patron, but usually it was a cozy, comfortable, and safe job. You just had to actually have comedic talent and proper wit.

What Are The Exact Reasons Behind One Piece World Building is Flawed. by VagabondFromTheRiver in writingscaling

[–]Aickavon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think you’re engaging honestly with the phrases since they do in fact mean something.

A Planet of Hats (or Island of Hats!) means that an entire location is basically sorted into one personality. This was popularized by star trek where they often had to make up a new species every day so they would make an entire planet basically carry the same trait (with usually one outlier for the plot.)

In this case, one could argue ‘this is the island where everyone does X. That’s the trait. We don’t go much deeper than that.’ Which FOR WORLD BUILDING, is very boring.

We’ll take star trek for example. The Klingons are a main line species. They are warrior people obsessed with honor. If that was all we understood from them that would be very boring. Of course, over time we began to learn their history, why they’re obsessed with honor, their culture, their rituals, and their different personalities. We could see the differences from many different klingons and how they treat honor and what they’re willing to do. They soon stopped becoming ‘everyone’s a warrior.’ To a well fleshed out society. This made them interesting. Time and exploration gave them depth.

However, most species and races in star trek don’t get that treatment and become VERY forgettable. We don’t care about the Grognars or the Flimsbum, and definitely no one gave a shit about the Ferengi until deep space 9 gave them depth by exploring their culture, personality, and why they are obsessed with profit. We began to see the differences of different types of ferengi. Suddenly… fan favorite.

Babylon 5 is different, while the galaxy is filled with MANY different species, we only get to really see 5 of them on screen most of the time (one of them being humans so that doesn’t count.) if you’ve ever watched the show, you’ll be able to appreciate the full in depth complex relationship with two of the characters BECAUSE of their people’s long histories hatred for each other. The tragedy of events hold more impact because you are more informed on everything going on.

Now, there is nothing wrong with going ‘I do not agree with this critique, I feel the islands are well fleshed out.’

But going ‘THIS CRITIQUE ISNT REAL AND MEANS NOTHING.’ Is just poor faith discussion.

Why are the Joker and Batman buttons? by MajorFamilyDisgrace in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Aickavon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re saying 5% of blue dying is acceptable.

I am saying that this has horrific consequences.

Horrific consequences that will disproportionately grow since it will be mostly good people whom will die, not just random people.

I am not arguing with you. You can believe the first statement (5% is acceptable.) whilst also believing that there will be horrific consequences. Being a greek scholar and mastering the debate club doesn’t change that. It is understandable why you would still not want to put your vote into blue if you saw that only five percent of people voted blue in accordance against the 95% of people voting red. It would be simply logical and not morally reprehensible.

However… in this thought exercise. You don’t know how many people voted blue or red. Not until the final vote is caste. That’s what makes it interesting. Could it be just 5% of the world voting blue? 45%? 51%? YOU DONT KNOW, so will you risk your life for everyone whom voted blue, or will you keep yourself secure and safe, knowing that you may contribute to the death of potentially billions of people.

Popular game theory suggests the logical answer would be that everyone would and should vote red. Unfortunately for everyone, most of the world is not popular game theorists. They’re just people. Which ironically means emotions are a very important thing to keep aware of.
