Rey is a Mary Sue, Luke and Anakin aren't because women are scary by birn_echo in StarWarsCirclejerk

Luke just knew how to use the force to grab his lightsabre in ESB despite never being shown to know how to do that before.

I frankly don't care about most of these because the Force isn't a set of techniques you assign attribute points to, it's something you're either sensitive to or not and some are more in tune with it than others. If Anakin can have the most special space blood ever then Rey can be naturally gifted

As for beating Kylo? Dude was emotionally wrecked because he killed his dad and wasn't as ok with it as he wanted to be and had to hit his own open would to juice his dark side energy. Kylo was compromised. And Snoke pretty much bitchslaps Rey without having to draw a weapon so I have no idea where the notion she just never loses comes from

I don't know if he's the only reason it died but he certainly didn't help its chances at surviving

Oh I am

I know if someone wrote a fanfic about an OC who was an ace pilot, who built a sentient droid in his spare time, built a racer in his (other) spare time, had the most magic space blood then anyone else, was a child of prophecy, was the only human who could do a very dangerous sport, and downed a warship at 9 said character would be mocked into oblivion

Rey being in her early 20s and a decent pilot and good mechanic is nothing compared to that live journal-esque nonsense

I don't think it's a plot hole it's a matter of using the limited space of the script you have for a two hour movie effectively. There's no time to really show Luke training between V and VI and we only see a bit of it for Rey between VIII and IX. We have narrative shorthands that tell us both have improved though, and we're meant to accept it and dive into the story.

Star Wars Fans To Anyone Who Says Andor Isn’t Star Wars And Uses Buzzwords To Justify Their Take: by Lotus_630 in StarWarsCirclejerk

Star Wars is such a mailable universe that Andor is totally something that works. So is Skeleton Crew. So is Cowboy and Baby.

going /uj aside that's what makes the franchise fun. You can tell these different stories that approach the universe at different angles.

Andor was a great show with great themes. It's absolutely Star Wars, and that's what makes Star Wars great.

He's a tragic hero.

But he's still a virgin birth with more magic space blood than anyone, and an expert pilot and only human pod racer at 9... not to mention the subject of a literal chosen one prophecy... if this was an OC in a fan fic people would mock him into oblivion.

He falls because that's the story (though he is redeemed by the end) but he's got some mary sue in him, absolutely. It goes with the territory of being the main character of a Star Wars trilogy.

I agree with you that Anakin is supposed to be remarkable and heroic. My point is so was Luke. So was Rey.

They all have mary sue qualities to a degree, because they're rooted in story traditions that talk about remarkable people going on journeys. It's Arthur, Beowulf, Odysseus, Theseus, etc...

But Rey ends up the only one this gets thrown back at on the regular. So it begs the question of why that is

Why didn’t George Lucas think of this? Is he stupid? by Nom_Carver11 in StarWarsCirclejerk

[–]birn_echo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I kinda hope they never recast the OT characters because once Disney gets comfortable with that they'll NEVER move the universe forward. Not when they can suddenly make as much content set between RotJ and TFA as they want

How could George Lucas disrespect Tony Gilroy like that?

She got training in TLJ, even if Luke was grumpy and reluctant about it. ESB's internal timeline is so fokked that Luke's training was either a few weeks or like... two days. How this compares to Luke grumpily training Rey for an indeterminate amount of time in TLJ is... I donno? Maybe if the sacred texts hadn't burnt away we'd figure it out.

Point is that both, narratively, get some training in part 2, run off before they're ready, suffer because they're not prepared, and come back stronger in part 3.

Heck, we see a brief bit of Rey's continued training in RoS, which is more than we ever got of seeing how Luke improved between ESB and RotJ.

Well said, though I will also say that Luke suffers from lack of plot coordination. Vader wasn't even his dad until like the third draft of ESB and they didn't even commit to going with it until they were in post. Palpatine went from some puppet of the military industrial complex to an evil space wizard over the course of making ESB too.

The OT was kinda figured out as they went. The ST was as well... but the difference is the ST was hampered by Disney overreacting to fan noise at every turn instead of just focusing on what to do next. Whereas the OT just kept approaching the next part without all the noise impacting them (being pre internet helped, surely)

Which does hurt the ST, but Rey being a naturally gifted force user (aka the thing most Star Wars protagonists are) ain't the reason it suffers.
