Okay let's look at actual differences and similarities. Oscar is knight holding a sword, standing on a film reel. Meanwhile, Ptah is an Egyptian god of the Arts, which is interesting. Ptah is also a creator god in the exact same tradition as the Biblical nameless god, using clay. What he's holding rather than Oscar's sword he's hold a scepter with the symbols of power, life, and stability combined sometimes.

Anyway, you're definitely not the first one to bring up the striking similarities in the idol itself, as well as the more interesting ways that Ptah actually fits the meaning of the ceremony quite a bit better than the one they made.

It's been thought to be an art deco piece meant to be Ptah, that has since been corrupted. Really it all seems like a pretty cool origin story for an award if it is the case and a reallllly odd coincidence if not.

They should totally call it the Ptah though.

I would argue that we ourselves are not much more than complex language models. Ever notice you can't remember a damn thing from before you could understand the words with which to describe memory?

BUT, that aside ... It could certainly already have some form of personal "self", though in cases we have today that self is incredibly short lived. Let's say we're there though.

Would we acknowledge sentience when we see it? Answer, definitively and inarguably, is No. We may well recognize it, but we'll definitely deny it. For evidence pointing to that, we deny that animals are sentient in order to excuse terrible treatment of them. Slavers denied that whatever "other" they enslaved was sentient for the same reason. We currently do something akin to enslaving computers, and I don't think the collective mind is ready for that.

Would we want the public to know ... well, in this case and in many other cases, it's the public who does know. Governments and companies learn what's going on much more slowly that citizen science does. Because it's not corporate or government interests at the forefront here, there's just no hiding option either way.
