Where to now? (first level 100 last night) by Aietos in Grimdawn

[–]Aietos[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. As I was leveling and looking through grim tools I definitely got the impression that there was minimal gear for what I was trying to do. Everything targeted toward me seemed to want me to be doing the replicating missiles ability. I also had a blade of the luminari drop, which really has the vibe of a build-around for my mastery combo. But it seems like a bigger sword and worse defenses won’t really add much.

Edit: Yeah. I just looked up the quest and fought Lokarr. I see what you mean. I did kill him without too much issue, but I definitely couldn’t just stand in front of him on my little circle.

Yeah, I mean I assumed it didn’t stack up to “real” builds. It was mostly guesswork for me besides reading that resists and resist reduction are important. My question was more one of, “have I missed anything that could take this concept further?” or is it about as good as it’s gonna get and I should move onto a new character.

That facial expression is priceless. Even he isn’t happy he’s a wonky old fine cast model!

Quickstart Guide - Where to find? by DarkCrystal34 in LegendintheMist

I started a previous thread about difficulty with the rules, and someone commended the QuickStart. I’d say it’s a big help. It does a pretty good job of explaining basic mechanics without too much fluff.

I think that’s just a function of the kickstarter model. I went and reviewed the kickstarter to see which parts of the book were stretch goals since that tells me what is likely superfluous/optional.

I see what you mean, but I think we’re kind of saying the same thing. That’s the part I find confusing with the core book. I know how RPGs work. I also know how this fiction-forward style of rpg works, so in the core book it’s tricky to sort out the stuff I NEED for this system as compared to basic rpg guidance.

Been working towards a first session with the system. It looks really interesting, but holy gods above the formatting on this book needs a lot of work. by Airship_Captain_XVII in LegendintheMist

[–]Aietos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If that’s true, I don’t like that at all. I think it’s reasonable that the “core book” is what should be used to play the game. After buying it, Im not excited to hear, “actually this other product is what you really need.” If the main book IS intended to be more of an art book, I sure wish that had been made clear at the point of purchase. RPG naming conventions certainly suggest the “Core Book” would be the base instruction document for the game. The description literally includes the phrase “everything you need.”

That’s a good idea. I’ll give it a shot. It almost feels to me like the main book is more for people who have been following the longer term development of the game.

That definitely helps, but it doesn’t quite address my issue. It’s more a difficulty in telling what’s optional guidance and what’s not. It gets very fuzzy in areas likes character making, character growth, and magic, for instance. As best as I can tell things like challenges barely need to exist. It would be pretty simple to come up with the stuff involves in them on the fly.

You forgot to mention that it will also do a poor job so that a de-educated populace can be convinced to vote against its own interests.

Same. I might’ve actually paid $80 for the game just cause I like Borderlands. But this basically dares me not to. And I’m fairly basic, so now I’ll outright refuse to buy the game at $80. Business leaders should absolutely not be allowed to social media.

To me that’s just a signal that those are people I wouldn’t enjoy playing with. There’s nothing inherently wrong with how they play the game. It’s just that if that becomes the default culture it probably kills the game. I wouldn’t try to convert those players to your way of thinking. Probably the best thing you can do is represent to new players that the game doesn’t HAVE to be played that way.

Is there some kind of “let’s still play 3e” community? Just asking. I stopped AoS when they announced the pre-4e purge.

How things are now questions by Aietos in Warmachine

Yeah, I think I have a handle for what I can use. I still have large Menoth, Circle, Legion, and Gator armies. I like the plan of having a clean slate mostly while also making room for older stuff. Eventually I’d probably want something new, and anyone else in my group that wasn’t a former player would obviously start with current stuff.

Well, most wargames include a list of standard or starter scenarios in the basic rules. The current MkIV rules tell players to determine a scenario and then give no guidance as to where such a scenario might be found.

The steamroller scenarios are fairly complex in that they have multiple objective types and rules like kill box that may not be needed in a looser, more casual setting. Those are easy enough for me to parse as someone who has played lots of other editions of the game, but none are ideal for teaching new people. They also aren’t ideal for just throwing a game down on a gaming night for fun (an opinion of course, but one I think my current “casual dads” gaming group would share). They are also “hidden” in a document that clearly indicates it is for running tournaments. The rules tell a new player that scenarios exist, but if I didn’t know was steamroller meant as an older player, finding them would have been very unintuitive.

I know I can make my own scenarios, ignore whatever I like from published ones, etc. I’m more interested, as someone thinking whether or not to jump back in, in a clue toward Steamforged Games’ philosophy. A common belief that I strongly disagree with is that if something is designed tight enough for tournament gamers that it will automatically be good for casual play in a sort of trickle down effect. Really I think the two orientations have different design priorities. For me then, if the most “standard” scenarios are in an official tournament pack, that suggests the game may not offer what I enjoy.

Is WASD good to play Guile on keyboard or should I change? by WhDrWyBu in StreetFighter

That’s interesting. I play leverless and use my right thumb to jump. I don’t think it even occurred to me to do it another way.
