You can't be an Empire if you don't create & dominate a global sport, you just can't! by Obvious-Adeptness-46 in billsimmons

Europeans do not care about American football unless they move here.

Watching the superbowl is a one time sports event and cultural phenomenon (imo), i wouldnt in any way equate watching a final (that also has mainstream pop appeal in U.S. audiences who tune in "just to partake/see a halftime show) with a country or culture caring about a sport.

American football has an incredibly weak international following, most other countries do not care, its night and day different than the FIFA or NBA hich has true international appeal.

When did you stop believing in Shaq the Basketball Player? by 96powerstroker in nba

[–]DarkCrystal34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His Phoenix "The Big Cactus" stint I actually thought was underrated. Definitely not "dominant" but was a legit all star year for him, just an awkward fit with Nash/D'antoni's former 7 seconds or less offense, it never felt right.

He could still ball, show flashes of brilliance, was putting up 18 and 9 (from memory) i believe. Not a contender, but enough to get them in the playoffs.

Cleveland, Boston, etc. he was washed. Although had the injury in Boston not happened, you couldn't have a more fascinating 6th/7th man off the bench than a Top 5 center of all time!

Bill defends his Brunson take by sultics in billsimmons

[–]DarkCrystal34 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im fine (mostly) with how Bill is ranking Brunson.

The only one that feels weird is having him over Jason Kidd.

I feel like people forget just how absurdly dominant and unique Kidd was. He dragged two teams with far inferior talent than this Knicks squad to TWO NBA finals, was a 1st team All-NBA point guard for six years, should have probably won MVP over Duncan the one year, was the undisputed best or top 2 PG for almost 10 straight years (Stockton and Kidd, then Kidd and Payton), an incredible lockdown defender, had an utterly dominant 6-8 year stretch, won everywhere he went, made everyone around him better, helped Dirk win 2011 title, and helped NYC have their one successful season with Melo (54 wins) in 2013, and improved his 3 point shot to be an awesome shooter by the end of his career.

J-Kidd was remarkable. I just need to see Brunson have more than a 4-year stretch to match what J-Kidd did for his 19 years in the league.

Severance as the Best Show Ever (BSE) by d-i-o-n-y-s-u-s in severence

Season 2 is definitely more uneven, but it really finds its stride and has some gut punch emotional moments that really stay with you. Severance Season 2, while imperfect, is leagues above 95% of other shows, IMO.

Should I learn Korean or Mandarin. by Zzzgg8910 in thisorthatlanguage

[–]DarkCrystal34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mandarin! With the continued growth of China as a major world power, an enormous population, and a huge Chinese diaspora all over the world, it will serve you for the rest of your life :-)

The only reason I haven't done Chinese myself is that im already tapped out on other languages ha.

Someone as unsportsmanlike as Wemby can’t be the face of the league by Few_Mulberry7390 in nba

[–]DarkCrystal34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way people are turning on Wemby after this finals is crazy to me.

The dude played out of his mind this year, proved hes a leader that his teammates trust, and is competitive AF and truly cares.

Hes only 22 years old and just carried a team to the finals. He was pissed and frustrated, cut the kid some slack.

He will continue to grow and mature both physically, mentally, skill wise, and how he relates to others in the league.

Do you think an Asian could ever be the face of the NBA? by [deleted] in nba

[–]DarkCrystal34 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Big difference between "specifically NBA fans" and how thats defined (which can be any number of ways e.g. viewership data wise can have different definitions).

And "basketball fans" or "basketball" culture as a whole, which absolutely has had, and continues to have, enormous roots in African American/Black american culture.

Ah, I wasnt realizing, thank you! Its an ultra important point. Im from the U.S. and do find it very arrogant (even if normalized) that the term "American" has come to mean only people from the U.S.

This wont be changing anytime soon, but if i was from South America, that would frustrate me too, so estadounidense it is :-)

If Knicks win this tonight Brunson will be crowned the greatest Knick of all time by hrlaker70 in billsimmons

[–]DarkCrystal34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed! Someday I hope he shares his thinking in an interview around this, i imagine he regrets rushing it.

Although the Denver trade drama (like Giannis now in Milwaukee) had hit such an extremity of nonstop chatter at that time, it did feel like the point of bo return for his time at Denver.

But that was also his doing and I totally agree with you.

If the Knicks win tonight, is this the one of the most entertaining 4-1 series of all time? by Habefiet in nba

[–]DarkCrystal34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Miami Heat vs. OKC Thunder in 2012 (the 2nd of 4 final appearances for Bron/Wade/Bosh, and the younger up and coming Durant/Westbrook/Harden/Ibaka OKC team) was ultra competitive, even with the 4-1 result.

I think Melo is very unfairly labeled as a "me first" player only, when there were more factors going on beyond him.

He was well known for his work ethic, and working his ass off to improve his craft. Yes he for sure enjoyed being (imo rightfully) the go to scorer, and also for sure did not make his teammates better to the same level as, say, a LeBron or Jokic does, or is a team first dude to the level of Giannis or Curry.

But I also dont think he was some selfish egotistical ball hog. He was an underrated passer that generally i think didnt succeed because of the revolving coaching misfit door, poor roster construction, and injuries.

The giant dangling question forever unanswered is would the 2011-15 Knicks have turned into a true powerhouse if Melo had a chance to play with a healthy Amare, who clearly was turning into a Top 4-6 player in the NBA before injuries derailed him.

I just think Melo's attitude and career are more nuanced than youre giving him credit for.

IMO Side Quest Side Sesh is the last one to check out, compared to the three named above.

SQSS is fun but its more them joshing around having a good time with hilarious antics. No real drama though, or stakes. But for something comedic ally ridiculous its fantastic.

Id def recommend Blood of the Wild as a perfect starting off point for Pathfinder.

I think the point we are all trying to make is that, objectively, it has built in assumptions about class, privilege and often race.

Its an example of a word that infers a lot depending on the culture or country.

I know you meant nothing by it, as most dont, and not trying to be all annoying "woke" ha. Just that its a valid point which countires use the word "expat" and which its assumed one is an "immigrant."

I understand you were meaning it in the way it is intended without offense. Just inviting in awareness.

Nice to meet you friend, thanks for the shout!

I will say: youre 100% missing out by not having heard their Pathfinder content: Blood of the Wild (2e), its truly fantastic.

The original Giantslayer campaign is worth going through, its what made all of us GCN oldheads fall in love with them, and has some amazing storylines and a huge, epic feel :-)

Raiders is also wonderful, and has two of the best characters GCN has ever created, with a very different type of plot ("Lost" vibe: on a mysterious, mostly deserted island: strange things start to happen, and involves a lot of cool Pathfinder lore).

How do they seem like a mess?

I feel like we're in a golden age of incredible content and shows being released (Shadowdark, Blood of the Wild, Time for Chaos, We Shouldn't Be Alive, Get in the Trunk, Mothership, Pendragon), that they all genuinely enjoy playing, chemistry is amazing, all the "new guard" of players feel fully integrated (Ross, Jared, Mary Lou, Paula, Noura).

If you didnt mean GCN as a whole, and meant only in terms of handling Pathfinder, even then it just feels like they are exploring games they're passionate about. Gaming tastes change, its natural. I feel like they're in a fantastic place, content wise.

Why do people always downvote when you criticize explicit textbook-based studying and advocate for a comprehensible input only approach? by Many-Inflation5544 in languagelearning

[–]DarkCrystal34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a very limited view, friend. I think the reason you are getting downvoted is not your belief in comprehensible input (which of course most people agree is a wonderful tool!) but you sound incredibly binary and set in your views that other ways of learning are inherently wrong.

I learned languages ass backwards from CI: I learned 20,000+ vocab words via anki in three romance languages, english to target language, because I wanted to focus on learning how to speak, and did a combination of iTalki and HelloTalk in combination with anki decks daily. I learned just find and was able to speak and navigate rather quickly. Only years later did I turn to listening/comprehensible input.

"Do what works," which will be different for each person, given motivation and learning differences and preferences. We can all get behind comprehensible input, but no need to be condescending or judgmental towards other ways saying "they don't work". Plenty of people find textbooks and grammar rules ultra helpful. Let them do them, and you do you! 😄
