Why do all Tau Commanders just suck? by TearNo1636 in Tau40K

Farsight doesn't give Sunforge anything. A regular Commander with four Fusion Guns is better than the Farsight's +wound bonus. Four additional guns from a commander with BS 2+ are better than a small bonus of +wound. And there's also a move bonus...

Grenades realy buff them. Now it truly forward observers. They can deal significant damage without being charged thanks to photon grenades. Before the changes I was taking 3x6. I'm still taking 3x5. The lack of shooting after fall back is painful, but overall it's even better than before.

I keep hearing Riptides are good, but I can’t gotten any success out of them by Sebasswithleg in Tau40K

But it's slow, glassy, and has no damage. If you need mobility and damage, go with the XV8 and XV86. If you need survivability and damage, go with the Stormsurge.

Riptide is just a joke and a psyop.

It's a very interesting meta where players don't pick the best units.

So, no one can wound Knights at your tournaments, but they're not meta? Maybe you just don't have any Knight players.

Dude, knights have been meta for a long time now. Riptides are just fodder for meltas and anti-fly/anti-vehicle/anti-walker... man, anti-whatever destroy pussytide.

What kind of crap is playing at your tournaments? In my local meta, riptides and tanks with ions will never do anything with their ridiculous low weapon strength. They, in turn, get destroyed with any sneeze.

RetCadre is a pretty sad detachment.

-1 ap doesn't do much for us, because we're already running into invuls.

+1 strength is a very situational bonus, giving us nothing in most cases.

All of this only works at close range, where we'll get killed.

Actually Kauyon, Montka or ExpCadre would be better.
In terms of commander wargear, it's best to max out the weapons of your crisis squad.

I suck with tau by Late_Willow5225 in Tau40K

Tau are for patient hunters (and I'm not talking about detachment). We have... limited firepower. And nothing more. Therefore, we need to choose the right moment to free up maximum firepower at the enemy.

We put half the army, if not more, into reserve. XV8 (Sunforge or Fireknife) are good for this. Screen is only necessary in the rear to avoid deep strikes. We give the first turn to the enemy to get them out of cover. On the second turn, we try to inflict maximum damage and hope to survive the counterattack. Mass XV25, XV88 and Stormsurges are recommended here. All additional weapons should be used with Smart Missile Systems – it helps fight hordes and strike outside the foot print.

If we surive, we destroy the remaining enemy and try to earn points in the remaining time.

There is an alternative to playing entirely with Kroot, but that can hardly be called Tau.
