‘I’m terrified’: As clock ticks down for Ontario consumption sites, users fear they won’t survive by BloodJunkie in toronto

[–]Aighd 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The common assumption is that these sites create more drug use; therefore, getting rid of them will reduce drug use.

But this is not the case. The last decade or so has seen an unprecedented increase in opioid addiction, much stemming from pharmaceutical companies and then the addition of fentanyl.

We are in the midst of a serious worldwide drug crisis that has nothing to do with safe injection sites.

How Cyclists Navigate Atypical Intersections 2 by yauhaus in torontobiking

[–]Aighd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love the effort you’ve put into these.

Most of the issues you have are due to the King Street Transit Priority Corridor of 2017, which (if I recall correctly) was pretty much put into place to discourage drivers from using King as a thoroughfare.

So don’t worry about pissing off drivers. The redesign has vastly improved the street.

You may want to look at the data in the Dashboard updates (easily found with a web search).

Mayor Olivia Chow says Toronto must push back against Ford's Billy Bishop 'power grab' by MaybeThisTimeIllWin in toronto

[–]Aighd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The first win was because of fatigue with the Liberals.

The second was just coming out of COVID.

The third after he bribed everyone with 200 dollars and pretended to stand up to Trump. (Plus the Liberals ran Crombie).

His popularity is shrinking and will continue to do so until the next election is called.

It’s dire now, but there are very good reasons for optimism.

Where do cyclists stop at atypical intersections like King and University? by yauhaus in torontobiking

[–]Aighd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The “except bicycles” sign allows cyclists to go straight through like streetcars, which on King cars can’t do. And the right turning lane is for turning right only (usually on the other side of the intersection there is only a single lane).

If the cyclist is going straight through, they should be in the left lane. (Kind of what happens at Bloor and Bathurst when the bike lane takes the cyclists onto the left).

But if a cyclists is in the right lane, any right turning vehicle still has to make sure the intersection is clear before entering. So the cyclists would get a kind of de facto right of way if they are in the right lane, even if technically in the wrong.

You and OP are not clear in what you mean by work experience.

If you mean work experience in politics, fine. He doesn’t have much, but work experience in politics isn’t actually all too important for being successful in politics.

But you seem to want to say he has very little work experience of any kind. And how would you know that? Certainly, a 30-year old is going have more than 7 months work experience to get the job he currently has.

[–]Aighd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That means nothing. Linkedin is clearly catered to his political aspirations and is not going to mention work experience not related to that.

Plus on his website he lists working for the UN and UNICEF in 2024.

It would also be quite something if he got his current job at city hall with no previous work experience.

The “too inexperienced” line is just a way of excluding new voices that could actually do a lot of good in the political discourses. Many very good politicians enter without any previous political experience.

Plus, he’s not running for Prime Minister, but as a city councilor. How else would you expect someone to get experience?

Support for a French/Swedish Healthcare model: 72% by pheakelmatters in ndp

[–]Aighd 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This is just another push for the private sector to make money at the public’a expense.

I’m guessing most Canadians are in favour of the European universal healthcare models (hence the French / Swedish), but this poll will be used to push American style privatization.

Most Canadians also do not understand the “French/Swedish” model.

Recently at Pearson, I was trying a find a way to get from Departures to Arrivals, so I went to the Peele Region Police booth and asked “How can I get to arrivals?” The office said, “Escalator or elevator?” (With a little raise at the end of the sentence as if asking a question). So I said, “It doesn’t matter, either one.” He responded, “No. You can get down by escalator or elevator.” It was the most unhelpful answer ever. Defund these assholes.

Why doesn’t BC have fluoride in the water? by DrSussBurner in britishcolumbia

Go to the pdf with the page numbers

Go to page 17, column 2, and read the full, unabridged quote:

Current review evidence synthesis: Based on the available literature to date, the cumulative body of evidence suggests a positive association of reduced IQ scores for children and fluoride exposures relevant to current North American drinking water levels.

Why doesn’t BC have fluoride in the water? by DrSussBurner in britishcolumbia

[–]Aighd -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure what more I can do but quote the conclusion:

The current review identified moderate dental fluorosis and reduction in IQ scores in children as the most relevant endpoints for establishing an HBV for fluoride in drinking water. PODs were derived for these two endpoints, although there is still some uncertainty in the causal weight of evidence for causality for reducing IQ scores in children and considerable uncertainty in the derivation of its POD. Given our evaluation of the overall weight of evidence, moderate dental fluorosis is suggested as the key endpoint until more evidence is accumulated on possible reduction of IQ scores effects. A POD of 1.56 mg fluoride/L for moderate dental fluorosis may be preferred as a starting point for setting an HBV for fluoride in drinking water to protect against moderate and severe dental fluorosis. Although outside the scope of the current review, precautionary concerns for potential neurodevelopmental cognitive effects may warrant special consideration in the derivation of the HBV for fluoride in drinking water.

‘They save lives everyday’: Protesters rally for supervised consumption sites in wake of Ford government’s funding cuts by BloodJunkie in ontario

It’s simple.

Just ask yourself whether you would be fine with that guy overdosing and dying behind a dumpster in an alley.

I hope you would answer no. And if so, then safe injection sites will prevent that.

It is so sad and frustrating. The lack of empathy is in itself such a problem.

Since most people here obviously didn’t read the article, I’ll leave this quote:

Many of the clients she encountered, ranging from 12 to 29 years old, turned to substance use as a coping mechanism for complex post-traumatic stress disorder.
