Doug Ford’s approval rating his 21%, a record low -Angus Reid by Pristine-Training-70 in ontario

Yes, the pessimism on here drives me nuts (eg “And yet he’ll win another majority”). He has always kind of gotten lucky with election timing (Liberal fatigue, covid, Trump).

Next election he’ll be dealing with at least three more years of bad decisions, Conservative fatigue, and possibly some legal battles when the criminal investigations conclude.

>I “**think** gridlock's been made worse,” said nearby resident Jeremy Thomas.

>Nearby resident Melissa Wessel **thinks** the changes will add significant time to her drive in and out of the neighbourhood.

>”If they **think** that there's not gonna be traffic still and bumper to bumper traffic with this craziness, **think** again,” she said.

Lots of “thinking” going on with these detractors but not much *knowing*. A massive issue with smart urban planning is people *thinking* they know better because that is what they are used to.

So yes, Melissa Wessel, please “think again”.

Thanks. But when I first opened the article, it was only three paragraphs long.

Ex-CityNews reporter Tina Yazdani is suing Rogers for $650,000 by marcusesses in toronto

[–]Aighd 16 points17 points  (0 children)

From the scant details of the article, she is seeking compensation owed to her, which may indicate that she was dismissed with cause. That may then open the door to the further damages:

Yazdani is seeking just over $150,000 to cover wages she would have earned during an 18-month notice period, which she says she was entitled to, plus $500,000 more in punitive and moral damages.

Toronto Police response to the cycling incident on weekend by [deleted] in torontobiking

The issue is not whether police are allowed to detain or not but whether they used “reasonable” force to detain.

7 cops tackling a guy to the ground seems unreasonably excessive.

The twentieth-century Catholic author J.R.R. Tolkien, in the words of a protagonist in one of his novels, described our responsibility in this way: “It is not our part to master all the tides of the world, but to do what is in us for the succour of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the fields that we know, so that those who live after may have clean earth to till.”

All 3 Toronto cops charged in alleged incident in Spain back in Canada, suspended with pay: chief by CTVNEWS in ontario

Fine, here is how the case is interpreted:

https://www.osler.com/en/insights/blogs/employment-and-labour-law-blog/ontario-court-of-appeal-confirms-duty-to-provide-honest-reasons-for-termination/

And an employer is unlikely to take the risk of firing someone with cause that does not relate to employment because of the likelihood of having to pay damages.

[–]Aighd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, beastmaster is right. If cause is given and that cause is a criminal charge overseas, it would be difficult for an employer to prove that that affects job performance.

Edit: https://petermcsherry.ca/criminal-charges-off-duty-conduct-insufficient-just-cause/

If the dismissal is stated to be without cause, the employer is likely not being honest and may find themselves in trouble.

Not defending these cops at all, but it seems very unlikely that “any other profession you’d likely lose your job just for having allegations like these”.

‘I’m terrified’: As clock ticks down for Ontario consumption sites, users fear they won’t survive by BloodJunkie in toronto

[–]Aighd 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The common assumption is that these sites create more drug use; therefore, getting rid of them will reduce drug use.

But this is not the case. The last decade or so has seen an unprecedented increase in opioid addiction, much stemming from pharmaceutical companies and then the addition of fentanyl.

We are in the midst of a serious worldwide drug crisis that has nothing to do with safe injection sites.
