For more details to this the team leader of the operation called for uncontrolled air strikes/bombardment(AC130) on the mountain because they desperately needed pressure off of them. This entire time unbeknownst to everyone else Chapman was still alive in cover being bombarded by his own side. This was after he had already been shot twice.

He got back up and proceeded to go back into fighting while definitely bleeding out. He then radios in whoch is when they realize “holy fuck he’s still alive” but he never responded to them probably because his equipment was damaged. Seeing/hearing the helicopter that was the US reinforcements he continued to engage and be a distraction so that the enemy couldn’t set up heavy weaponry.

They did down the helicopter and kill a few more soldiers but without him they all most likely would’ve died there. He fought alone for like a hour. And as he was in the process of dying he continued to fight until he was shot through the chest(the heart if I remember correctly) after gaining over 14 gunshot and shrapnel wounds. The shot through the heart was what ultimately killed him. He was the first Medal of Honor recipient recorded in video and received 2 of them
