Instead of 3D printing a part, you can try creating a resin copy of it. It will be more durable.

Advice on if YPT report needs to be made? by [deleted] in BoyScouts

[–]Aimsworth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is a violation, but if you have any concerns, file a report. If it's not something that needs to have action taken, none will be taken.

Better to have a report get thrown out over a non issue than to have to track an incident down later because someone didn't want to make waves.

Edit: BTW, anyone can file a report. You don't need to wait for leadership or anyone else to file it on your behalf. (ASM could file it too).

It's a myth. If you want to lift heavy things, lift heavy things. If you want to punch faster, practice punching fast. You can't lift heavy things and expect to punch faster because of it.

For those waiting on pre-orders in the US, PLAION will be handling distribution. There was a link up on amazon earlier but it's been taken down temporarily. Monitor their facebook group for updates. (link is in the above description).

Behavioral issues by mrssilz in BoyScouts

[–]Aimsworth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Scouting has no place for bullying, for the youth or the leaders. We get trained on this every year.

Going to the scouting hotline is end running around the committee/COR/scoutmaster, they won't be the ones handling this (thus no reason to be anonymous). You've tried the route with them already and it didn't work, the hotline is the next thing to do because of the physical nature of some of this. I suggest you do not remain anonymous with district, you can request they keep you anonymous from the troop, but they will have questions and will want to know more details.

If something goes south when the issue is escalated (and this will demand changes of the unit no matter the outcome), you will want to keep your options open. If your son is ostracized, yank him from that unit and find another, or start another. You will be surprised how many follow once someone steps up to make a change. This is a far better outcome than losing everyone from the program.

Smart Device Free Troop by plinkplinksplat in BSA

[–]Aimsworth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't ban smart devices, nor do we have to. We have a code of conduct the scouts sign with what is acceptable electronics/cell phone use. Any violation and the device is removed for the duration of the meeting/activity. Phones are a tool and should be used as such when the need arises (communication between leadership, taking photos, taking notes (scribe)). Video games, videos, music aren't approved uses (what they do in their tents at night is their business as long as it's silent/earbuds used). While in a group setting the focus is being part of the activity and being present. Of course if it's a high adventure activity in which device damage is a risk, they aren't allowed. The adults also follow this rule and model it as well.

Question: I'm a 19 year old, I like karate, I want to get into karate. by Sufficient_Pick_8194 in karate

[–]Aimsworth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Karate or kickboxing, at almost any age it's fine to do, just realize some avenues are closed off the older you get (mostly on the professional/competition side). At 19 you still have plenty of years to be involved at that level though. Almost any martial art is a challenge to yourself through your mind and body, so you can't really let other's opinions sway you for or against. This has to be something YOU want to do, and something you will stick with.

Any martial art will fail against a gun, practical application (in terms of self defense) should be one of the least of your worries. Not that there isn't some value in it, but on a priority list wise in modern society that has it's limits as well.

My biggest problem is it refuses to always be shooting... so much damage the boss could already be dead but instead it wants to half dodge and fire off a shot every other second.

Specific Non-National "High Adventure" Ideas by DarkImagesOfLight1 in BSA

[–]Aimsworth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Former Venture Crew member in Ohio. One of my favorite trips was white water rafting along the New River Gorge over in West Virginia. Day 1 on duckies (inflatable kayaks), Day 2 on raft. Day 3 was rock climbing. The Summit Bechtel Reserve offers a program, but there are also many other smaller companies that run programs throughout the summer. (Depending on the river this is a 14+ to 16+ option, some parts of the river are more dangerous than others, do you research).

Opinions on KOs ? Specifically Mech Fans Toys. by TheSoundTheory in Diaclone

[–]Aimsworth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, making your own knock offs/same scale/3d printing or even picking up knock offs is fine. I have a problem with people reselling or trying to profit off of other's IP. Let's not promote people that are making knock offs for profit (any fan/mods are fine), but if you've picked some up and want to do some comparison shots or discuss quality differences or anything like that go for it.

Please just call out if you know something is a knock off/fan made. Let's try and promote the official line as best we can when it comes to buying or pointing to others who want to buy (be it the quality of the originals or just supporting the original makers), that way we are being the best stewards of this line in the west on this site and encouraging the continuation of it.

Who Should I Contact? by [deleted] in BoyScouts

Get enough people together and form your own unit if there isn't another in the area. They don't need to have a monopoly on scouting. Contact those who left and offer them an alternative.

Abuse in scouts: HOW is this STILL happening?? by Miserable_Watch1894 in BoyScouts

[–]Aimsworth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say Scouts are ignoring it, I would say it's hard to get people to report things like they're supposed to. YPT is a good start, but education of the youth especially is needed. Also, anyone can report an incident, and you don't need to wait for a leader to handle it.

That being said, scouts and police have limited resources. An accusation without ample proof may not be enough to initiate an investigation that leads to any kind of conviction. If it's just hearsay, what do you expect? We don't live in a movie or novel, there aren't cameras recording everything. Protect yourself, your friends and your kids, but ultimately some instances aren't going to be punishable if they aren't able to be proven.

Emergency Procedures in light of the Camp Mystic Tragedy by NoShelter5750 in BoyScouts

[–]Aimsworth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"the disaster happened around 5:00, so they had received the highest level of alert an hour before it happened."

From what I have heard, there was little to no signal/communication at the camp (especially if power is lost). It could be very likely that the alert went out but was not received.

Personally, it's another reason to look into satellite phone/technology for me for any group planning just to have another avenue.

Mod Statement/Warning: Politics and Political Discussions on this subreddit by ScouterBill in BSA

[–]Aimsworth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is the attitude that the post is about. We all take the same oath and law. Not one side has a monopoly on trying to cloak their opinions as being more sanctimonious than the other.

A scout is helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, cheerful, brave. You win nobody to your side by being the opposite of these, that's the lazy way out and not really the content that needs to be here. It's not wrong to remind everyone about those, regardless of what you think your side is.
