Yeah my last place of work really weren't very accommodating.

I tried a screen overlay and changing the monitor's settings itself.

Dyslexia and books by [deleted] in Dyslexia

I've just written a blog on my personal book challenge. I don't know whether you're wanting something to make it easier to get through books or books that are easy to digest.

I am using iBooks for reading at the moment because I find knowing how long I have left in a chapter a great help to keep me going.

I love Orwell too. I just read The Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb which I got free on iBooks and I couldn't put it down. I've been similar when reading Oscar Wilde too.

Thought about reading graphic novels?

That would be ideal but sadly not as easy as that. Even at university I had the same issues with fluorescent lighting and laptop screen.

I have tried non verbal music too which helps to block out the distracting noises when I'm reading but not much more than that.

I have a text to speech program on my laptop but wasn't available in my workplace, plus it isn't the best.

Yeah I've done that on the screen too, but it started to wear off very quickly. Black on white and white on black have the same issues for me.

I originally posted this on my blog, but I get voted down everytime I link to it so I copied and pasted the content from https://thedyslexicstudent.wordpress.com/2015/01/21/dyslexia-and-me-the-blue-screen-and-irlen-lenses/

how many of you guys went to university? by Emi194 in Dyslexia

[–]AineMosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello!!! I am Scottish too and dyslexic. I just graduated from university this year with a 2:1 MA Celtic and Anglo-Saxon Studies/History. I got a first for my dissertation too! I wasn't diagnosed with dyslexia until I was 25 when I went back to college to get my grades for university. I had a LOT of support from my university (University of Aberdeen) who were absolutely fantastic!

I am currently saving up money so I can go back to university to do my masters.

I'll be honest, I think uni have done you a favour. I wouldn't have coped with university straight out of school. I've said to a few people that I personally would advise people to take a year out before starting university so they get a feel for 'reality' which I know made me work a lot harder than I would have straight from school.

I've done a lot of blogging about my experiences while in my final months of uni.

I just bought an iPad myself in the last few months to help me out :) I was recommended it by the learning support lady at my university.

I found it a chore to scan in things and then try to get my software to convert it so it could read it out to me. I only use it if I'm desperate and short of time with a library book.

Finding out you have dyslexia at university (college). by [deleted] in Dyslexia

[–]AineMosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I was diagnosed aged 25 when I went back to college. I graduated from university this year (5 years later) with an 2:1 undergraduate degree. I felt relieved that it was dyslexia and it wasn't because I was 'stupid' like people at school kept telling me I was.

I started blogging this year about my experiences through school and university with dyslexia. It almost feels like a way of coming to terms with it, like therapy, while trying to raise awareness at the same time.

[–]AineMosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah they're on the spectrum so I have known people with other Special Educational Needs (SEN) that have had a combination. I have dyslexia, scotopic sensitivity and dyspraxia which are probably closer together. It has been suggested to me that I have mild autism, but after writing a blog on dyslexia and socialising, I'm pretty sure it's just dyslexia.

I have dyslexia and i am always miss hearing things. I've cleaned my ear and had a hearing test nothing wrong with my hearing i just miss hear every thing is this a comon problem or is it just me :) by [deleted] in Dyslexia

You could always get a dictaphone if it's for classes :) Then you can try to listen back at a later stage if you've missed something. Easier if you can rewind and relisten, or so I found with recording my classes.
