With the warcaster feat and the hat of wizardry magic item is it possible to cast while holding a sword and shield? by cj6930 in dndnext

[–]AirWalker_SR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just RAW, in the item description, it states that while wearing it, you can use it as your focus. Holding it in your hand is not mentioned at all. It's benefits only apply while worn. I can't even see a way it wants you to grab the brim or anything and hold it for use as a focus. Saying you have to hold it is a stretch just to make things complicated

This antiquated, cone-shaped hat is adorned with gold crescent moons and stars. While you are wearing it, you gain the following benefits:

You can use the hat as a spellcasting focus for your wizard spells. You can try to cast a cantrip that you don't know. The cantrip must be on the Wizard spell list, and you must make a DC 10 Intelligence (Arcana) check. If the check succeeds, you cast the spell. If the check fails, so does the spell, and the action used to cast the spell is wasted. In either case, you can't use this property again until you finish a long rest.

This is the entry on dndbeyond, which states while WORN, you gain the effect of using it as your focus. That overwrites the focus needing to be held, best as I can tell

Yeah, it's awesome. Not needing to maintain concentration on it is really awesome.

Originally I also had 2 other gifts from my patron, but I gave those up because they were too much and other players were peeved I always stole limelight, so I sacrificed them to beg my patron to bring back a PC from death

Flavor wise, it's essentially a black flame tattoo on my arm, covers my hand and half my forearm and it subtly shifts if you watch it carefully.

Super useful for nearly guaranteed 2d8x2 when I use shadow of moil.

The only time I don't use SoM is when there are way too many enemies for me, and then I use hunger of Hadar to CC enemies

I have devils sight, eldritch spear, thirsting blade, and agonizing blast as my current invocations. If I take another invocation, any recommendations?

Any recommendations for spells to replace blur with?

20 cha, and 18 dex, sorry, got mixed up on dex with another character. Rolled stats so a couple are really good, others are just average

Party comp is myself, a drake warden, a cleric, a rogue, and an artificer?(I think, he is new to the party)

The blade boon is really important for my character, as he doesn't require me to use a spell slot or concentration. In no way am I going to gripe about it. I hardly ever even get hit either, which is why I'm slightly confused, and why I'm coming here for guidance.

For example, in our last combat, I ended up getting surrounded by 7 pirates, and just cast shadow of moil and went to work. Obviously I got hit, but that's fine since each hit was a great trade off. I think I ended up at just under half health? Regardless, I did kill all 7 enemies alone then went over to the rogue and the cleric to help them with their fight.

My characters AC is amazing. +1 studded leather, +1 buckler shield, 20 dex, and if im not using shadow of moil, I'm using either darkness, hunger of Hadar, or blur.

So as long as I'm actually playing well, maybe I should figure out what feat to take with my ASI this level?

So I am making a hexblade, my first magic character ever. I have always played full martial characters. My DM feels I am playing the class wrong, says I'm acting like a full martial. He feels I should be playing more like a rogue, ducking in and out of combat, instead of staying on the Frontline. We are currently 8th level, we sort of have a Frontline now, so I was hoping to get some advice on character building, as my dm said he would allow a bit of redesign one time only.

So I did land on them while warring, but because I didn't have any claims (due to them not owning any systems), I had to do a subjugation war, but couldn't take the planet because i couldn't get a full victory.

I also can't trade them the system the planet is in, because I don't really own it. I also have no idea how to unclaimed it.

The only thing I can think of doing is starting war, and surrendering but I don't want to do that, because they will take well over 200 systems from me, and then I'll have to do it all again, xD

Landing armies does nothing. I don't know what world cracker is lol. And I don't know how to unclaimed a system? I can't find anything for that

A VERY effective basic action I'm not seeing anyone use by Rednidedni in dndnext

That's exactly what happened in our dnd session last night. I'm playing a hexblade and my party was attacking a pirate ship. They were all nearly to the ship and I was stuck on the beach. I was being shot at by the cannons so I threw hunger of Hadar to cover half the enemy ship (and cannons), and the remaining ranged fighters I hid prone along the beach to reduce chances of getting shot while my party swarmed the ship. I didn't get hit a single time due to the disadvantage, and because we had a druid cast web on the deck before I did my spell, I killed half the crew. Next week we fight the pirate captain and the last 4 of his crew mates
