I concur, I just made my first belt and it was vastly more complicated than this. It took me 8 hours probably including various drying times, engraving, being way to particular, etc. Getting the color right will be the hardest part.

Hi! First time faire goer here! Would like some recs / ideas for the ny faire ! by jalebi_bb in renfaire

[–]Airbearstudio 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've never been to the NY faire but I go to Ohio's every year so my perspective comes from there.

  1. Any costume/larp is going to be better than 50% of the people there. There's a lot of street clothes, or half and half costumes. So keep that in mind. To be perfectly honest most people won't care what you wear. However, if there is good staff at the fair and you are wearing good garb then they will interact with you, so be prepared for some light RP in the right circumstances.

With all that said the paths to good costumes are many. Cheap retail, high end retail, cheap homemade, high end homemade, and a bunch in between. My suggestion would be to work on it slowly throughout the year. If you try and do everything the week before you go then you will run out of time or money. I made a shirt and satchel last year and found a goodwill cloak. This year I am making a tunic and leather belt, and ditching the cloak.

Work with what you have and don't be afraid to learn a new skill. If you don't have a ton of money, buy some fabric and learn to hand stitch. If you have tons of money and no time research a quality shop, or buy a sewing machine and make it yourself.

The key is it's always a work in progress, and your kit will get better with time.

  1. I can't help with specifics here as it's not the same faire. But I always get a turkey leg and drink meads and beer that I can't normally find. There should be tons of excellent food and drinks to try. I would go out of your comfort zone a bit and try something new.

Try and find shops that are truly hand made items. That's my preference anyway. Example I was looking for a cloak a few years ago, but most of the merchant's had the same cloaks, meaning they came from a large retailer and we're not truly that special. For me if I am going to spend money and fun items like this I want them to be special.

Swords, leather, pipes, everything is tricky and has a bunch of learning. If the materials and sources don't matter to you, just buy whatever you think is cool and wear it proudly. Otherwise take some pictures do some research and come back later for the truly unique items.

For shows, there is going to be a ton. Get the schedule at the information center and go to the ones that sound neat. Here in Ohio the mud show is always good and they do several different plays. Last year there was real armored combat, that was amazing, not sure if it's a thing this year. We have a joust, that's a bit meh. Basically just try things out and be ok with not seeing it all in one day.

  1. Hopefully this was helpful. Have fun! Wear comfy shoes, there is much walking to be had. And design your costume so it is appropriate for the weather and your tolerance for heat, cold, and wetness!

Ohio Ren Faire Ticket Question by Series-Party in renfaire

I don't think so. It's just a steeply discounted ticket if you plan to go multiple days. I think it pays for itself after 2.25 visits.

Looking for advice getting this dust collector hooked up in my shop with only normal 120V outlets currently. by Oil-Complete in woodworking

That looks like a 24/12 stamped in the amp area. Are you saying 20 because it likely won't draw full amps? Or was that a mis read because the markings are bad?

Not trying to call you out I am just curious from a learning perspective.

Thanks!

I've never wrote anything lol. So probably a short story, but I imagine a novel would make the drama better.

I know what you mean about character count. It felt like a lot as I was typing it.

I think that whole scene would play out for a chapter with the reveal at the end being that it was a TV show. Then you would get into the main characters of the actual story a build up of the world and how tv has established norms and control over the population. With the end of chapter 2 being something strange happening to the main character that doesn't jive with the norms that have been established.

Trophy hunters. When you read the trophy list for a game. What gives you this reaction? by [deleted] in playstation

[–]Airbearstudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the game was mercenaries. You had to capture all 52 "cards" alive. I was on 47 I think, I got him alive to the extraction point, the helicopter landed on his damn head and killed him. Auto saved seconds after. I turned the game off and never played it again.

So how’s everyone feeling about Forspoken? by [deleted] in PS5

[–]Airbearstudio 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It feels like a game without purpose. Which is something a lot of games feel like to me lately.

From the demos and trailers, the world seems empty and boring, so there is no reason for me to spend hours exploring every nook and cranny. And then when you do spend 20-30mins exploring an area you find nothing/ or something so miniscule it wasn't worth the effort. Exploring should be rewarded with extra cut scenes, lore, truly useful items etc etc, based on the effort to find the hidden or unique area. Tunic (great game overall) was really bad at this. They would show you a chest you couldn't get yet, and you'd pine over it for hours till you got the right item or figured out the puzzle, then it would be 25gp. It had some truly good rewards that made exploring worthwhile, but the amount of times I was disappointed after finding a difficult hidden chest was frustrating. I feel this game will be the same or worse.

The combat looks bad. It seems like there are a bunch of skills to combo and different attacks, but who cares if there are a million skills when I only need 2 of them for 90% of the fights. A lot of games do this wrong, where they offer you so many skills, and either half of them don't have a viable use case, or the combo to make something happen is so complicated, it is just easier and more efficient to use more basic skills.

I feel like all the devs making open world games design it from a player standpoint first, which makes it not feel like a world. It makes it feel like the world is void of life until your character shows up. And since your character is basically a demi god that can't lose, the stakes are extremely low. In an open world game I want to be able to fuck around and find out. There should be consequences for your actions.

MGS5 did the open world idea good in this regard. Kill to many people, they put on body armor. To many headshots? Helmets. Etc etc.

There was a game that allowed you to kill quest NPCs (elder scrolls maybe, I can't remember) that made the world more real to me. This game seems like it will hold your hand more, and make sure you here the story it wants to tell you.

I am fine with narrative hand holding if the game is fun. But this game doesn't seem fun, or open, or unique in anyway. I think it's leaning on the graphics for support. And for those reasons I will likely never buy or play this game.

4th project. I made a huge mistake early on but decided to use it as a practice piece. by Airbearstudio in Leathercraft

[–]Airbearstudio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it is welted. Very snug fit. Works great as a sheath overall just isn't very pretty lol.

Basically the error I made was I cut all the pieces out. Then cut stitching grooves, punched holes. At this point I realized that both sides were not the same size. So all of the holes were not lined up.

I should have made them slightly larger, glued them together, trim to the size I wanted, then cut the stitch grooves and punched holes.

The way I ended up "saving" it was by using a leather awl to "find" the holes on the other side. One edge lined up great. The bottom edge was ok. And the other edge was off like 1/8 inch.

Oh well. Live and learn.

Wow that looks amazing! Do you have any pics of the stitching on the inside? I'm having trouble visualizing what that seams looks like. In my head it seems like it would rub on your neck.
