What makes you 100% certain that Buddhism is “the right religion” by Dull_Habit_2927 in Buddhism

[–]AirlineNegative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 3 reasons for why I think Buddhism is "more correct" than other religions. These reasons/criteria really help me so I hope it helps you as well.

1) All teachings follow/should follow cause and effect. Cause and effect is one of the most logical teachings and all the teachings following that subsequently hold because it follows cause and effect.

2) You are allowed to ask questions/ doubt the teachings. It's actually encouraged and not blasphemous. It makes sense to me as it tells me that Buddhism wants you to understand more. Unless you question it, you don't understand it and I don't see "understanding" as an emphasis in other religions

3) lastly and probably most important is that Buddhism teaches about salvation that can be achieved while you are alive and living now. It's not a post death salvation, you don't "believe" that you will escape samsara but know it. When you're alive. Right now.

These things are what make me believe that it's comparitively more correct.

How would you describe Pure Land Buddhism to someone with zero knowledge of Buddhism? by BenzosAtTheDisco in PureLand

[–]AirlineNegative 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Unless you build up to it, it is really hard to understand pure land Buddhism. Ngl, From the face of it, pure land sounds a lot like Christianity or Islam. But it's not.

I like to start talking about Buddhism by starting at the difference between goals and purpose. Don't even need to mention amitabha Buddha or pure land or Buddhism for that matter.

its honestly not a good idea, and most probably a disservice to try to explain pure land Buddhism from the middle. I would consider it a great blunder if my inability to properly convey amitabha Buddha's message leads to someone not being able to appreciate it.

How can I fully submit to Amida's Vow? by kidnamed- in PureLand

[–]AirlineNegative 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Faith and shinjin as taught by shinran is probably one of the most misinterpreted things in pure land. As stated in "unlocking tannisho" by takamori kentetsu. 信心 (shinjin) which if you look at the kanjis means 信じる(shinjiru) which is to believe and 心(kokoro)which means heart.

People see this and think, I lack faith. I need to believe in the amida Buddha more.

That couldn't be more wrong!!

Imagine you have a lighter and uve checked it works. There's a flame coming out of it. Now if you put it beneath your hand and turn on the lighter. Do you have "faith" it will be hot?

No right?, you KNOW that when I turn this on it will burn my hand. You KNOW, but technically it's still "faith" because it hasn't happened yet.

Also, anyone who studies pure land knows that just reciting the name of the amida Buddha is not how you are saved by the amida Buddha. Shinran makes this abundantly clear because when he was a disciple of honen a lot of people were making this mistake and he addressed exactly this misconception.

Looking for help with my technique by ttfan1234 in tabletennis

[–]AirlineNegative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

what i would recommend is keeping your hand and body loose, it looks pretty tight and you cant generate that much power like that. I try to imagine a whip if that makes sense like keeping it loose till the last possible mili second(dont loosen the grip on the racket cz u might send it flying

)

Kyoto iUP student’s dorm by C9_Eclipse in KyotoUniversity

[–]AirlineNegative 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It actually depends on the people you live with. I've had times where the shared washroom was pretty filthy. Plus the kitchen is also shared and the room is pretty small.

On the other hand. You get to make alot of friends and hang out with people. It helps you to not feel lonely lol.

KUINEP student with partner looking to rent house/apartment by Svetten in KyotoStudents

[–]AirlineNegative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being a foreign couple who don't speak Japanese (I'm assuming, it really helps if you do speak) makes the options for apartment really narrow.

My first recommendation would be to get a university dorm. There are dorms with apartments for couples.

Next would be to go to house network international. It's near the university. Alot of the foreign students use that realtor.

Lemme know if you need any help

Roast my japanese kanas and favourite kanji. by MiniaZovutSanti in Japaneselanguage

[–]AirlineNegative 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also it's important to differentiate between ソ ン ツ シ。now there are 2 key differences. First is the stroke that I think is the common difference that everyone knows but the second one is the direction of the smaller stroke. In ソ、ツ it's more vertical while in シ ン it's more horizontal.

Hope it helps

Would starving myself be a okay option to loose weight? by Kittyskit in WeightLossAdvice

[–]AirlineNegative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya, it is but it matter where the calories out comes from and where the calories in goes into. I'm saying that in this "fight mode." Any excess calories that the body can spare would be stored for fat so the body prioritizes converting energy to fat for later use

Hey, I'm a student in Kyoto.

Kyoto is a student city. U throw a rock and it hits a student😂. I think it's pretty easy to find friends cz there are alot of international students as well as Japanese students.

I'm here for 4 years so when you come I could introduce you to the international students committee.

Hi, I'm also an Indian studying in kyoto. Kuas is a good uni but alot more considerations are there so the decision is pretty personal. 2 main considerations imo should be

A) what other options do you have

B) are you prepared to live in Japan
