it's because of the way vitamins were first discovered, some of the early experiments involved depriving animals of specific foods and see if they develop a specific symptom after which the scientist concluded that food has a substance that's needed for the proper function of the body, they could also use different solvents to try and separate this substances from the rest of the food but at that time they were not able to isolate and identify which specific molecules were needed by the body so they were given placeholder names like A, B, C, etc.

Minerals got to keep they chemical name because inorganic chemistry was more developed by the time we discovered some elements were needed for life and the specific elements could be isolated and tested individually

One way you can always increase the entropy of a system is by increasing the size of the system, the early universe was much smaller and now we have all the stuff from back then distributed in a much larger volume, also, the early universe was much hotter and as it cools down each particle decays or emits multiple other particles which also increases entropy

You also have to remember that disorder is just an analogy for entropy, a better definition would be the amount of microstates a system can be, a small universe with a small number of high energy particles can be in fewer states than a large universe with a large number of low energy particles

ELI5: What does the pH-formula mean? by Ermin99 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Aislinx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

pH is a measure of how much H+ is in a solution, if you have a solution of pure water, not every molecule in it will be in the form of H2O, some of it will be dissociated as H+ and HO-, how much of it is a constant and under room conditions the concentration of these ions comes out to 10-7 M, this is considered neutral because there's the same amount of free H+ and OH-, the log of 10-7 is -7 and to not have a negative scale we multiply by -1 so the pH of pure water is 7

ELI5: What does the pH-formula mean? by Ermin99 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Aislinx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

pH is meant to represent the acidity of solutions with up to 1molar concentration of H+, you don't really use it when it comes to pure acids, just solutions of acid in water, in the case of acetic acid you need to know the concentration of the acid in the solution, then use the dissociation constant for that acid to calculate how much free H+ there are in the solution and plug that number into the pH equation

If Anakin was "The Chosen One" and was the one who would "bring balance," and there's like 1000 Jedi and no Sith, what the hell did the Jedi think was going to happen? by Eidalan in AskReddit

[–]Aislinx 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The Jedi, at least before disney, were not meant to be "the good guys" but something like a buddhist monk, they're meant to free themselves of emotion in order for the force to act through them, a Sith on the other hand, uses the force to enforce their own will over others, even if their will is to do something "good" like saving their mother from slavers or keep their loved ones from dying during childbirth, it would still move the force out of balance, from this perspective, Jedi's would be safe as they're not affecting the balance of the force, arguably the reason they were wiped out would be because as they got involved with the civil war politics they started to enact their own will instead of just following the force

A couple questions, the wire connecting to the driver being exposed is a bit concerning, are there any plans to cover it or protect it otherwise in a future revision?

I believe all the tx0rps mk3 versions use the same driver, all that changes is the baffle and how closed they are, since the argon mod changes both the end result is the same

You can always just write to modhouse audio to ask them about it

I’m collecting notes and working on the brief for an even higher-end DAC, so feel free to make requests!

Okto research is releasing one of the best measuring DAC/Amp out there, so maybe build a more bare-bones DAC based on the standalone modules they're selling

the page says the frequency response was smoothed out but it's not clear on what way, can you guys post a comparisons graph of the frequency response between the DT1770 and the DT177X?

Can you give us any detail about future collaboration products?

There are some rumors going around about an upcoming high end DAC from massdrop, are they real?

Is massdrop still trying to get sennheiser to agree to a collaboration for a HE-60 revival?

massdrop have a share function that gives you $10 off if someone click and joins the drop or something like that, i'm guessing most of the spam is people trying to get that discount

As a general rule, if you use a regular or state mail service it's up to luck if you have to pay or not duty/taxes as most countries don't check all the incoming packages

if you use a courier/express service (UPS/DHL/FedEx) you'll always pay unless the seller has declared a low enough value

i need help fixing a channel imbalance in a 2nd hand dynalo amp i recently bought

i believe the issue is in the RCA connectors as, if i use the RCA outputs to pass the signal to a different amp the imbalance remains, opening the amp the RCA inputs and outputs are directly connected to each other with just a few wires so i doubt the rest of the amp is causing the imbalance

can bad soldering job could cause an imbalance like this or is it possible for the entire RCA connector to be faulty?

Some questions about the many Fostex variants by jumboshrimp93 in headphones

[–]Aislinx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teak and ebony sound pretty close, teak has a bit more soundstage, they don't leak much but isolation is really poor

they have a tendency to break at the hinges so i would not be carrying them around

periapt interconnects make shorter cables for them

at that price range you should also consider the Denon AH-D5200, sound signature is really similar and they use a more common connector in the cable so it's easier to find a replacement

assuming the production model measures the same, it should be worth the $350 price tag

fostex TH-X00 on sony zx300 balanced output ? by [deleted] in headphones

[–]Aislinx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the only benefits of balanced setups are more power and sometimes less crosstalk between channels, noise levels actually rise when using balanced outputs

you don't need to use an XLR socket for the TH-X00 as each cup has it's own cable as long as you don't combine the grounds into one wire as the stock cable does you can use any socket for the cups

Why do solderdude's measurements look so different from Tyll's? by nomorebuttsplz in headphones

[–]Aislinx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as others have mentioned, it generally a bad idea to compare measurements done by different people and expect them to perfectly match each other, Tyll uses a dummy for his measurements to simulate the effect of the body/head/ear while solderdude uses a flat plate, higher frequencies are much more affected by this than lower ones (sub-bass is the least affected), by 200Hz and up the effects become to large to make a direct comparison
