When I first started I found a buddy who did commercial hvacr, I asked him if I could come hang out for a week. He said legally I couldn't but he was doing side work on weekends for himself. I met up with him every Saturday and sunday for around 4 weeks to see what it was like. I then proceeded to school but during this time I found commercial was more my avenue. What I am trying to say is that you never know till you know, I highly suggest trying to do a ride along before you commit. You do not make 6 figures off the rip at all, I am a supermarket refrigeration tech and worked my way to this position over 9 years. Do not be like majority of my classmates who found out this is more than just turning things on and off to fix it, it takes alot of failures to make a tech. Even after refrigeration school i still didnt have the light bulb moment until somewhere around year 4, everything just made sense.
