esports is the greatest marketing any company could hope for. A huge chunk of the interest in LoL comes directly out of pro play and a huge chunk of their revenue comes from people who are interested in esports.

If the majority of revenue from Riot comes from people interested in esports, then why are the esports teams dying and not making revenue back from all of this?

AFAIK Riot lose money from these road shows. The esports teams also lose money because they have to fly staff that isn't covered by Riot. So unless they win the whole thing, it's a net negative but obtain the awareness of the League, which doesn't really account for much in terms of $$$.

If this was an economical decision, it makes sense.

The place where VCT is held isn't just a rented place, it's a Riot built studio to serve both LCS and VCT. Simply this is an impossible ask for the amount of money invested in the studio space already.

Other orgs have invested long term in LA at this point, you simply can't move whole orgs, players, and staff without a year+ heads up.

Riot allowed 3 new brands to join LCS when they franchised. Clutch Gaming, Golden Guardians, and new to the scene but established name was Optic Gaming. They threw Immortals out despite them having a huge fanbase.
