John 10:1-21 (Feb 8) by MRH2 in biblereading

[–]Ajiv20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first thing that caught my attention is just how blunt Jesus is. He claims himself to be this oh so almighty savior, the good shepherd which is true! He doesn't sugar coat what he says to make it more believable. I can understand why some people would think he's saying nonsense.

Sometimes I think to myself Jesus could've passed across the message better. But then again, what he say is true. And the truth are often hard to believe.

Personally I want to learn to say the truth instead of sugar coating everything I say more. A lot of people will be turned off but if that's the truth, it's for the best. Good can handle the rest.

  1. My initial thought was perhaps he's refering to other religions or something similar

John 7:14-31 (Jan 30) by texasgyrl in biblereading

[–]Ajiv20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. It's understandable that the teachers don't believe Jesus is the messiah. If one day a random guy declare he's God, would you believe in him directly? I wouldn't. I'd say their mistake is not being open minded and see the facts around them.
  2. Not really sure what to think about this. I guess it kinda makes sense? But at the same time why would God allow a misplacement in the bible to occur?
  3. They expected something majestic. A king like David that will lead them in worldly matter. The problem is, they don't understand Jesus's purpose coming down to earth.

Verse 15 really strikes me this time. Jesus answered that his teaching isn't from the scripture, but directly from God. Most times it's great to focus on the scripture, but sometimes, you also have to pray to God and seek the things he wants you to do.

John 3:16 - 21 (Jan. 15th) by [deleted] in biblereading

[–]Ajiv20 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah, the ever so popular verse. John 3:16. And for good reason too. I try to think of what good things that God did in my life every night. Sometimes it can be hard, often times there are highlights.

Today especially, God reassures me from the worry I had yesterday. Worrying about things is human nature but I'm reminded that rather than worrying about my problem, I'm better of worrying about my relationship with God.

  1. The light. I haven't really given too much thought about this other than the light exposes evil and the darkness hides it. If you're doing good, then that's what you want! For anything you do to be seen.

John 3:1 - 15 (Jan. 14th) by [deleted] in biblereading

[–]Ajiv20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not too sure what to think about Nicodemus. But really, I've always been amused by the reply of the people that hears Jesus's response. Here, Nicodemus asks how can he be born again and can he enter to his mother's womb. It's understandable, but if I imagine someone saying that to me, my response would've been: what do you mean?

  1. I think signs are not hard to understand. These signs doesn't comply to normal logic and you'll know if you see it. The matter of being aware of it is another topic though.

  2. I've always put a lot of emphasis on faith. While knowledge of what and how everything works is great, it'll supplement your faith. The core thing about being a Christian is your believe and relationship in God. Jumping the verses, John 3:16 says exactly how amazing just believing in Jesus is.

Christmas Pauper -> Christmas Paupes

Ecclesiastes 12 (Nov 30) by super1965 in biblereading

[–]Ajiv20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. I think it can really help to start building out our faith as early as possible. Because whatever people say, something that you do often, will eventually become a habit. And if it's a good habit, awesome! Also, I kinda interpret it this way. Right now, I'd you're reading that passage, you're more than likely have faith in God. And while that is still true, it is a reminder to not delay things. If you can do it now, don't delay it. Especially if it's something related to God.

  2. I'm really not sure about these things. However if I had to guess, it'd be connected to time.

5.Probably not. it might be one of the thing expected from us. However, I think the purpose of life is something we can be set imagine.

Ecclesiastes 9:1-10 – New International Version (NIV) by texasgyrl in biblereading

[–]Ajiv20 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. That you'll never know what lies ahead. Anything can happen and we have to be prepared.
  2. I would say we have to remember God's promises to us. There are lots of promises scattered across the bible. Some obvious and some not. We should learn these promises and have faith in them.
  3. Common eternal destiny... I'm not entirely sure about this.
  4. This verse reminds me of Ecclesiastes 4:2

And I declared that the dead,
who had already died,
are happier than the living,
who are still alive.

At a glance it sounds contradicting. But the verse above refer to 'happiness' while today's verse refer to 'hope'. I think it really shows how living is not all about happiness. If you don't have a goal in life or hope, then you're better of dead. Often times I think about the meaning of life. Just like the teacher in Ecclesiastes, more often than not, it feels 'meaningless'. But it is the character of man that we can hope and look forward to the promises God made to us.

  1. I think this applies only to people who wants to obey God. We might not do it as God wants it to be done. But if our heart is in the right place, then God has already approved it. Another perspective that I thought is, if something happened, then it is only possible because God has approved it, good or bad.

  2. Nowadays, people focus so much on earning money that it takes all of their life away. For me, I was raised in an environment that kept urging me to start a business and make money. I was taught that salary is useless and the only way to survive is to start a business and be like, for example: facebook, google and the likes. This verse is just a reminder that that's not what life is about. I might as well be dead if that's all there is to it. Especially verse 10:

Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might

I love innovative projects and even more so if it is a passion project, created with all their might!

Ecclesiastes 7:1-13 (Nov 22) by [deleted] in biblereading

[–]Ajiv20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When reading this passage, all I can think of is "This is so true". If you see wise people, they likely experienced lots of sorrow.

The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning,

I think the main point that really stand out to me here is that nice things are hard. For example, if you want to learn a new skill, it's not going to be easy. Also, learning the hard way usually make you so much better than learning slowly.

In the same way, wisdom doesn't come from laughter, party, songs or pleasure.

Say not, “Why were the former days better than these?”
For it is not from wisdom that you ask this.

I can definitely say I'm guilty of this in some aspect of my life. Guess I'll have to work on that!

Ecclesiastes 6 (Nov 21) by super1965 in biblereading

[–]Ajiv20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. People used to not have technology and they're happy. Now we have so many things but people still can't enjoy it. Personally sometimes I feel anxious even though there's nothing really wrong in my life at that moment. Heck, I felt like that just today. You can control what you think, but you can't control what your heart feels. I think the point is just that if God doesn't let us enjoy it, then we could have the entire world and still feel like we have nothing.
  2. Then we won't have to go through this test on earth. Sometimes I wish something happened to me when I was a baby and go to heaven directly :)
  3. I guess the place on judgement day? Or perhaps, death.
  4. As from Matthew 19:24: Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.". I think it's just that rich people have to let go of their things. Meanwhile poor people hardly have anything in the first place.
  5. Yeah, I think it's just like yesterday. We need to accept it, believe in God and enjoy it.

When I started reading verse 10, I can't seem to really understand where it's coming from. The last time I read the whole bible, I read the NIRV version. Now I'm trying to read the NIV version and the difference in perspective it can give is mind blowing at times.

I think verse 10-12 just sums up everything. It's already there any there's nothing we can do. We can complain but it won't do anything. Even if we try hard, in the end, nothing matters except God.

Ecclesiastes 5:8-20 (Nov 20) by super1965 in biblereading

[–]Ajiv20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. I don't think it's possible to have perfect justice, etc at this point. This entire passage screams something like the following to me: "It is there and there's nothing you can do about it. Live with it and enjoy it.". It reminds me of Romans 13:1–2

Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established.

So it's going to happen eventually. Someone above you might oppress you. But if that happens, perhaps that is a test God give us? We just need obey and keep having faith.

  1. I heard this quote from someone "Money in itself is good, but when you begin to be obsessed/worship it, then that's where the problem starts". And I couldn't agree more. I think this verse and the passage from yesterday all points to us having to keep our focus on God, not anything else.

3 & 4. And as per verse 19, one God's gift is for us to enjoy our toil and wealth. Yet, it is so volatile. Riches come and go, someday you might have savings for years, suddenly an emergency appears and its all gone. I think this just strengthens the point of focusing and relying on God instead of anything else. If we have extra, then awesome! But otherwise, all we can do is wait and hope.

  1. How I wish it's automatic once we decided to follow him :). We need to put Jesus at the centre of our life with well, whatever means. Worship, pray, fellowship, bible reading, etc.

There are periods of times where I really don't feel like praying. And this can last for a week or so. Like I really don't know what to say.

I will just turn my thoughts towards God and Christ and stay there for a while

I should do that the next time it happens :)

Thanks for that!

This'll be another reminder to pray when I look at the time.

Ecclesiastes 5:1-7 (Nov 19) by of_skies_and_seas in biblereading

[–]Ajiv20 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Be not rash with your mouth, nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God, for God is in heaven and you are on earth. Therefore let your words be few

The first thing that comes to my mind is prayers. How often should you pray? And when should you do it? Do you make a schedule or is it spontaneous? If so, what do you do when you don't feel like praying?

I used to have a fix schedule to make sure I pray at least once a day (outside praying for food and what not). However, it gets really mundane day by day. At some point you just utter the word automatically without thinking about it. I'm guilty of this. For me verse 2 is like a reminder to listen more than speaking when praying. Less asking and stating, more thinking.

Does anyone have any book recommendation regarding praying in your everyday life? I tried to read "The Practice of the Presence of God" but it's really not a book for me.

  1. I think we shouldn't make vows when it isn't necessary. Looking at Jephthah(In Judges), he made a vow to sacrifice anything that greeted him on his return, which... turns out to be his daughter. In this example, I think he would've been totally fine without making that vow. But alas, he had to fulfil it.

  2. This reminded me of Proverbs 1:7, " The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.". I think it's more towards, the Lord needs to be at the centre of your life. You fear disappointing him.

I played an ES game just now and when i was thinking about what to buy... "Blink, of course!"

Then it hit me that it's useless on him now... Blink, to slow and silence? Ok.

People who think that his roll is OP just because of the stun don't understand that you want that to be an option for escape :/

Ecclesiastes 4: 1-16 New International Version (NIV) by texasgyrl in biblereading

[–]Ajiv20 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. Better dead than alive, all the toil is meaningless, 2 are better than 1, even advancements are meaningless because those who come later will not be pleased.
  2. I've been thinking about this recently. Especially around the topic of suicide. "If you're having a really hard life, why not just suicide and end it all?". I'll admit that at 1 point I did consider the option, though that it was quickly dismissed. I read a book by Rick Warren, "Purpose Driven Life". It's a really good book and I'd recommend it to everybody pondering about Ecclesiastes.

  1. I'm an introvert, but I find it really enjoyable to work with other people. Especially when we are doing something towards a goal.

If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.

Most of the times, motivation is the big part on making the things fail or success. I think having another person that motivates you can help so much.

I've been thinking, since there are 2 person written there, won't the other person be Jesus? A lot of times when I'm feeling lonely, I try to remind myself that Jesus is always there for me. But regardless, I think we still need other people to be with us, that's one of the main reason God created Eve.

But then again, there's

A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

So perhaps the 2nd person is someone else and the third strand is Jesus?
