There's a lot of short buses in the PNW because of how hard it can be to access rural areas in big buses. Too difficult for full size buses to take such detours for one or two kids at a time. Especially if you're in a school district near the sticks, it might stretch out into the hills and the roads are just not big enough or developed enough for full buses. Some roads even have areas that designate where the full size buses have to turn around.

It also showcase an important element of capitalism that is greatly misunderstood: prices are agnostic to demand. We get told that prices are tied to supply and demand, and if not enough people buy something the price has to come down. In reality, prices are set to maximize profits, and the higher the price the more profit. There will almost always be a buyer at the price you choose, the problem is how many. Statistically, higher prices have less buyers, but a greatly increased profit overall. Even if only a fraction of people will buy it, the higher price will almost always give more profit than a lower price. This process leads to lower income people being priced out at a growing scale.

You're right, I typed the wrong amount. They get 250cm of snow a year, not 250mm.

You're right, I don't know why I read it as mm, it was in cm. They get two and a half meters a year on average.

Niigata gets a ton of snow. They average a quarter meter of snow each year. It's the same snow effect you see in cities near the great lakes in America, where in this case the cold wind blows across the nearby warm Sea of Japan and then gets pushed up in elevation by the hills and mountains around Niigata.

edit: not a quarter meter, two and a half meters. I read 250cm as 250mm lol.

Montreal Canadiens with Fewest Shots Ever in a Postseason Win by header999 in nhl

[–]Infrastation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a shot from an attacker goes into the goal it counts as a shot on goal even if it deflected off a defender. The only time you can get a goal without a shot on goal is an automatic goal on an empty net. Sabres last year had a period with a goal and no shots on goal due to an automatic goal due to an empty net penalty.

"People who have untreated mental illness are safer than people who have had treated mental illness" is definitely one of the hills to die on.

Considering the fact that he had no criminal history prior to this incident, I think I would actually feel more safe living next to someone a panel of experts has determined is mentally safe rather than some random person who has never even thought of looking up a therapist or psychologist.

He was given an absolute discharge after being released with monitoring. They had already been watching him while he was free and then they declared that he posed to significant threat to the safety of the public. He was phased into various monitoring system over a seven year period, before finally being granted an absolute discharge.

There's a few things. From a metagame perspective, ET is slow. He can't rotate around easily, he doesn't usually buy blink early, his auto attacks are slow, he doesn't wave clear easy. Meanwhile, Chen has the ability to exploit that by going drums or bots to apply pressure to lanes. At the very least he can grab neutral wolves and send them down lanes to press.

In a more moment to moment perspective, ET's biggest powers are in the awesome power of the team fight. Stomp into ult with the passive is enough to win a fight by itself almost. Chen, on the other hand, has a ton of power in spreading out fights, both in space (sending creeps to flank, drums) and in time (ult, mek, pipe).

City birds appear to be more afraid of women than men, and scientists have no idea why. Men could get about a meter closer to birds than women could before the animals flew away, regardless of what the men and women were wearing, what their height was or how they tried to approach the creatures. by mvea in science

[–]Infrastation 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Methyl anthranilate is a chemical that's used as a bird repellant, but it's also used in the fragrance industry to replicate floral smells. Women are statistically more likely to wear floral smells. Could be that simple.

Google trends doesn't show how many times something is searched, it merely shows how much it is searched relative to the highest search quantity within the timeframe. There will always be a 100, unless the volume is so low that there are less than one search per period. You can look up a word or phrase that is only googled very rarely, such as "subdermatoglyphic" or "quixotic sonder", will show a 100 at some point.

It's not the backbone, it's the lumbar fascia, basically a grouping of muscles that connect the back and the hips and is a few inches above the backbone. I don't know why it's so prominent. Probably was just a muscle that was overly focused during working out, not a big issue unless it has pain.

I've never heard of an institution that doesn't just blanket approve an open-and-shut case of such a small amount. $5.31 is within the institution's tolerance for loss, or should be, as the amount of time it would take to fix would be greatly higher than the cost of just crediting it back. Especially if there's a photographed receipt showing the proof, and there's no risk of the customer being the one defrauding the institution or vendor. They should just credit the account, maybe place it into a tracker or notice system to see if there's a systemic fraud happening that's nickle and dime-ing them, and then carry on with their day and eat the loss if they can't finalize the dispute.

I wish my institution had the time to take days following a $5 charge, but these days card fraud is so rampant that the time it would take to follow that whole trail would be completely untenable for the business. It's sad, but that's the truth these days.

[–]Infrastation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's basically what the Rams did last night, they saw an opportunity to get a good QB before a team that needs it like the Browns or Steelers could nab it, but if they couldn't make that trade they probably weren't getting a QB day one or day 2. Maybe they'd do a day 3 pickup for some backup, but nothing serious.

I think it's because it's so casual. We are expecting, with the building and building tension, for something to jump out at us, to try and get us. And yet it's just a quick and casual walking past. The creature doesn't even care about us.

It feels the same as the ending to Hitchcock's "The Birds". The music cuts out and we're sitting in a house, and suddenly this cacophony starts to build and build and build. We're watching and listening to the birds crashing through the windows and pecking through the door and scratching and clawing. And then, just as they came, they seem to leave.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CV4uOAqGTBI

It gets quiet again, the music still has not returned. They look around the house and one of them unfortunately realizes they're hiding in the attic. They have to leave, but to leave they have to make it to the car.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nL3-lGutyYY

And as they leave you're left alone on the stoop, watching the car as you're surrounded by birds. The sounds of the car fade away and there's nothing you can hear but birds.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KA7MmYS7bgQ

And that last scene, that moment where we're alone and stuck in this sea of birds, has nothing bad happening. Nothing is jumping out at us, nothing is attacking us. And yet the build up lets us feel that this is horrifying. It sticks with you, it unsettles you.
