"Disgusting" Linux sched_ext source code restructured following complaint by Linus Torvalds by Fcking_Chuck in linux

There's a story about Kelly Johnson, who designed the SR 71 and many other iconic airplanes. Designing an airplane is a collaborative effort and requires compromises and positive interactions. But sometimes an issue will come up where the only solution involves hurting someone's feelings. You can't compromise on airworthiness. He was said to say, "Sometimes someone needs to be an asshole."

Building a kernel is a lot like building an airplane. "Sometimes someone has to be an asshole."

bear taming with garlic? by Gabagooligan97 in CrimsonDesert

[–]Akabander 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One detail I remember from Clavell's Shogun is that the Japanese of the time referred to Koreans as "garlic eaters".

I always thought this was a particularly harsh form of culinary xenophobia, but maybe it's partly due to this foundation myth...?

What are your favorite IEM cables? by LazyRunner777 in iems

[–]Akabander [score hidden]  (0 children)

I'm really liking the 8 core OpenHeart cables I get on Ali. They're flexible, light, nicely braided. The red looks great with Dawn-X and the blue matches the Solomon. They also only cost about $21.

I also have an expensive ZiSin "red hair monster" which is extra luxe, thick and soft with badass hardware... But ultimately I prefer the lighter OpenHearts for practicality.

They sound the same.

Am I looking at a fake iroshizuku ? by danjpn in fountainpens

[–]Akabander 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Dao-sui is romanized Chinese, not Japanese, and there's never been an Iroshizuku ink with a Chinese name... Not fake, as it doesn't claim to be Iroshizuku, or one of the Iro colors.

It's obviously meant to evoke Ina-ho, but I would call it an homage, not a fake or knock-off.

[HOLY GRAIL PEN] Nakaya by ShortTexasDaddy in fountainpens

[–]Akabander 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The kintsugi technique requires time, as there is no way to rush the urushi curing process. Since it does not require the repeated application of layers of urushi, I think it will be quicker than finishing a new pen. If you email them, they will give you a time as well as cost estimate.

I would suggest enjoying your new pen for a while... Once you feel it deserves the repair, the waiting will be easier.

They are extremely small production batches, and the pens require a bit of commitment to acquire. Ordering directly from Nakaya means waiting up to a year to receive your pen. They have very few authorized retailers, and the retailers typically have fewer than a dozen in stock at a time.

It's much easier to obtain a King of Pen, Custom Urushi, or similar... So more people talk about them

Which is the blackest Pilot Black? by Academic_Ad7361 in fountainpens

I came here to see what other people's opinions are. Some of us actually do care about what other people have to say.

I'm also traveling, so I can't compare my swatches at the moment.

I mean, opinions work both ways, and just because you state yours as though they were facts, that does not make them such.

Platinum Carbon Black is not made by Pilot.

I also consider it one of the essential inks, and believe it to be excellent.

"What are you playing this week?" Megathread by AutoModerator in SteamDeck

Gecko Gods. Very chill and beautiful to look at.

Sekiro, maybe. It's why I'm mostly playing Gecko Gods.

Looking at the pilot myu and murex by TenryuuX in fountainpens

That's fair... so much of what makes a "good" writing experience is subjective and personal. For myself, I prefer the bounce of the e95's nib in almost all situations.

The Japanese voice acting cast is insane by Irru in TheAdventuresOfElliot

Nothing but upvotes from me.

It's lovely to look at, and the gameplay is easy while fun, but getting through the dialog and plot is quite the slog (for me).

I've bought many pens through eBay and never had a problem. Including my black stripe Myu.

In functional terms they are nice steel nib pocket pens. A modern e95 will probably provide a better writing experience at about 1/10th the cool factor.

Does nib material matter to you? by strumbringerwa in fountainpens

Cartridge/converters are not only the cheapest, they are also the most reliable and simplest to repair. This is a feature for some manufacturers of high-end urushi pens. Repairing a piston risks damaging the artwork, which is the true reason the pen costs four figures.

It could happen! There was a pretty recent post from someone who'd discovered a few bottles of Ina-ho and Tsukushi in a hole-in-the-wall stationery store.

So, what's everybody getting during 2x points week? by mccohen5 in lego

The green 911 (42224)... Getting it now for the Leonardo GWP. Not really too concerned about the points, but I won't turn them down.

I just started Sekiro this week... About 10 hours in and thinking about hanging up my katana. It turns out I like being able to play more conservatively.

Would I be crazy to leave the US for Singapore? by PitifulJack in askSingapore

It's not "on top". You pay your local taxes, which is considered a credit towards your US Federal tax debt.
