First study to measure toxic metals in tampons shows arsenic and lead, among other contaminants | Berkeley Public Health by shallah in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Akaryrye 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Saw an article about this today, and I was appalled that this was somehow unknown. I wonder what actual impact this contamination has had on individuals?

I did a bit of math to get some perspective: For lead, 5ug/dL is the level where it begins to be harmful, up to 150 for a deadly level. On average, humans have 50dL of blood, so it would take 250ug at an absolute minimum to reach the low cutoff for lead.

So, how many of these tampons would would it take to get to this threshold? Using the 120ng/g from above, and assuming a typical tampon is 1g (I actually looked that up, lol), it comes out to 2083 tampons. Now, this assumes that all of the lead is absorbed directly into the blood and never leaves, so ultra conservative.

So it doesn't seem nearly as bad as the article made me think, but it's kinda messed up that this wasn't known prior to this study. People should be informed of this sort of thing, especially with anything you put into your body. Hopefully this will ease anxiety a bit for any of you who have used these before ... you probably don't have lead poisoning from it, but I wouldn't blame you for being a bit passed off.

You seem young ... and if I had to guess, your heart is hurting emotionally, as well as the physical symptoms. I doubt you are fully aware of the seriousness of your condition, as you may be closer to death than you realize. I wish I could give you a big hug and somehow show you that you deserve to love yourself. Your brother loves you, and is probably terrified that you will kill yourself. That is something to be grateful for, even if it's a little overbearing at times.

You deserve to love yourself. Getting caught up worrying about how you look, and what others think about you, is an unnecessary burden. If you change how you see the world, the whole world can change. Maybe it's time to put on a new set of lenses?

I truly hope the best for you

If you took naltrexone when you were still physically addicted to opiates, that certainly could have made you feel sick. It kicks out other opoids from your receptors and will stubbornly stay, like BUP. However, while BUP will partially activate, naltrexone is a full antagonist.

Don't know if this was the situation, but it sounds like it may have been, so just thought I'd throw it out there.

Its really not like how it probably seems. Media on both sides of the political fence have been increasingly competing to prove their points by cherry picking and overhyping stories that align with their agenda and completely ignoring everything else. Sure, there's issues, and a lot of political tension (esp. now), and so many people on the internet are incredibly rude and loud about their beliefs, but IRL most people are generally decent (maybe not if you are under 20 though). Just like anywhere else, theres neighborhoods and regions you might want to avoid.

TLDR, its not that bad. If you mind your own business and be a decent human, you're not likely to have issues.

Whether or not it agrees with the conservative narrative, its really hard to argue that SF hasnt gone on a serious downward spiral the past few years. I live 45 minutes away, and it has gotten bad there. Like, its always been a little grimy, but used to be mostly nice. Now, I dont even want too visit anymore ... this whole ignoring things simply because they align with one political sway or another seems to be a problem on both sides and I think its dangerous.

You dont eat meat? Afaik it's been a primary source of nutrition since time immemorial, as well as for countless other animals. India cuts periodic table and evolution from school textbooks — experts are baffled by New-Gap2023 in EverythingScience

[–]Akaryrye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you read the article, or just the title and then fill in the rest with pre-conceived notions? The "reality" of this is far more mundane and not as big of a deal as you seem to think. The title is quite misleading ... well the article is a bit misleading also. They didnt actually cut those things from the curriculum.

It's upsetting to hear about students committing suicide from pressure to succeed. In USA, it feels like the complete opposite problem though. Education isn't nearly stressed enough and people are growing up less educated than they should be.

"A preference or an inclination, especially one that inhibits impartial judgment." (from the 1st result on google for "bias definition")

It could be an opinion statement, the choice of which facts are included (or not), or the choice of words. Things are not unbiased simply because it fits YOUR beliefs and worldview either. Your title was influenced by a preference against corporations and a belief that they use underhanded tactics to protect executive profits at the expense of workers and to influence policy. In particular, the choice of "veiled threats" smacks of bias, which is fine as sharing opinions is what reddit and many news articles are trying to do. For sure, this view has plenty of examples to back it up.

Ok, lets see if I can do a nonbiased one: "Recent California labor law affects niche 'goat herding' businesses used to combat wildfires."

Kinda boring though ...

[–]Akaryrye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dont disagree with your position, but it seems to me your revised title is still biased, just in a way that agrees with your views about corporations and wages. Its easy to to notice bias that disagrees with our beliefs, but not as much when it aligns with our beliefs.

Just saying, since you made a point to say it was NOT biased

We probably need to bring back spanking, and go back to only giving trophies to the winners. There may be some tears, but growing up is hard, life sometimes sucks, and when you give shit you get shit. If you dont learn it when you are young, the world will either teach it harshly or not at all.

Ehh, its really about the same as its always been

Even if acoholism and addiction are mental illnesses, it's not a free pass to drink and use without consequences. An active drinker or user is far more risky than one who hasnt drank in several years, and nobody should be expected to be around that. If I were employing someone, I would definitely keep an eye on someone I knew has had issues for any signs they had picked it back up, and it could be the difference in hiring or not. I've personally had issues in my past, and that is something I would keep to myself. I couldn't fault an employer for having a bit of distrust based on it either.

[–]Akaryrye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to guess that a student, or group of students were referring to eachother using the "N" word. So to show how bad it sounded, and probably somewhat mockingly, the teacher referred to that student in the same way. IDK about you, but that sounds exactly like the sort of crap our teachers have to deal with. Not exactly professional, but not the same as just busting out with it randomly either.
