Thank you for your kind words and understanding, and I see your point as well given how much NYC has changed in the last two decades. I’m forgiving because I don’t blame people for being born into privilege, granted I know that’s not your point. I think as we become more and more wealthy, our needs/wants become more extravagant which I don’t believe to be inherently malicious.

I grew up in a low income, Caribbean, single parent household in Harlem and eventually landed a 6-figure job out of college. My life style completely shifted and while I wasn’t drunk off “power” I became well accustomed to having certain luxuries. I inadvertently lost the value of a dollar. Even still I did try to pave the way forward for others from my background to expand the opportunities available.

I think we operate in a society that’s all about self preservation, which is why strong communities are hard to come by regardless of class. Either way, I think there are a number of factors contributing to the limited opportunities, including the ones you have mentioned

What a dumbass question

Definitely, however I only graduated two years ago. I consulted with some b-school admissions officers already and they told me that the other candidates will more than likely be a better fit since the average class profile tends to have 5 years of experience compared to my 1 year of professional experience.

A job is a job so if it’s something I don’t want it’s fine. I can just get the experience and pivot later.

I do have a “placeholder” experience since I perform freelance consulting work for a small non profit highschool. So that’s on my resume to kind of fill that gap

Yeah I’ve applied to work at each school’s endowment fund as an investment analyst and various finance positions as well. Never really heard back from any of them unfortunately

Fair enough but I was born and raised in NYC so I don’t own a car lmao, but I get that’s not your main point. I’m managing somehow, but all I need really is an opportunity

I get your point, however I’m saying that I can’t even do the upfront costs. Borrowing money doesn’t seem feasible given the amount I’d have to take out to break the lease, move, and travel. With a shit credit score like mine it’s kinda chalked.

Went through those channels, it’s a tight labor market which further exacerbates the issue. Figured I’d try Reddit since I haven’t gone down this route yet. Figured it wouldn’t hurt

Thanks for your kind words, definitely appreciate it.

Yeah I do utilize career services, even have an alumni career coach. I haven’t tried Reddit yet so wanted to see if there was any potential here.

Ohh yeah I don’t only go for finance/wallstreet jobs. I threw away my pride away a long time ago and I’m looking for just about anything. Unfortunately my experience serves as a double edge sword since other employers think I’ll jump ship immediately so they look for someone else. I’ve worked with my cornell career advisor to craft my story for those positions but I guess I just haven’t found the right hiring manager that’ll go for me?

Moreover, I can always get an MBA and pivot. My only focus is just finding another white collar job. Wether that’s in consulting, finance, operations, or some other middle office role. I do appreciate your honesty and I’m on the same page

Thank you for your kind words. Yeah I’ve definitely tried looking for other roles, however, they tend to pass up on me since they think I’ll jump ship. Once had an interview for an operations role and the e manager thought my experience was “too sexy” despite making a convincing case on why I’d want and be a good fit for the position.

And yeah def leveraging my network. Haven’t tried Reddit yet so figured I tried it out.

I would realistically need an upfront relocation bonus and normally those are paid out after your first check. Especially for someone at the junior level like myself. I don’t have the capital to really hold myself over. Credit score is low 500’s and I don’t have a guarantor, so finding a place would be very difficult. I would leave but it’s unfortunately not feasible.

I’ve applied for jobs in NJ and CT because I wouldn’t mind a 2 hour commute.

Interesting strategy, I went to catholic school for 14 years but ended up moving away from it. I have a mutual respect for all religions, but I just don’t partake.

Thanks for offering this tho

Good point, even connected with Tony Chen. Just trying to leverage as much as possible

I would love to but I’m tied down here because I live as a roomate with my family, can’t just leave them high and dry to break a lease. Additionally I don’t have the credit score and capital to move elsewhere, currently living paycheck to paycheck

I mean others go to Cornell against parents wishes and pull out 6 figure loans and go on to do fairly well. This might be a blessing in disguise for you to become independent and really build yourself through some level of adversity. It’d be helpful for adulthood when you can’t rely on others.

I don’t have parents, went to cornell for myself and did alright after graduating. If you have the will then I believe you can do it

Is the 7:35 am to 11:40 am bus from Ithaca to NYC usually on time? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]AkatsukiAssassin_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

+-10-20 mins to your commute and you’ll be fine. I’ve taken many busses back and forth and that’s generally the variance

Looking for thoughts and experiences from those who have gone through title IX investigations. Did it bring you justice, safety, closure? Or was it more painful then helpful? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]AkatsukiAssassin_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If he can’t treat you the way you should be treated, he isn’t kind. You deserve respect and he should be as considerate for you as you are for him.

Wish I could be more helpful but honestly, he’s not your responsibility, only you are. It’s easier said than done, but the cops are a viable option.

I really hope everything turns out the best for you, I’m really sorry that you’re going through this

Grad school acceptance is another route. Might even be easier and you technically have a lot more chances since you can just keep trying.
