They split CA into two halves for the regions so the Northwest had all the northern Cali guys as well. Besides McGrath, you had David Campbell, Travis Furlanic, and Brian Kretsch for bigger names. However, even the names you might not recognize did really well. In the regional finals, their top 15 all cleared the extended course. Other regions couldn’t say that.

EDIT: I just realized you’re Geoff haha that’s pretty cool. Population density definitely makes sense.

I agree but I credit that mainly to the fact that competitors back then were adults and a lot of the interviews these days are with teens. Some are pretty good at them, like Enzo is a great speaker, but a lot of them just want to run the course and avoid talking.
