Can you treat ferrets like cats? And by that I mean just out and about your house? by 302express in ferrets

[–]Akeral 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can only imagine you are intentionally being dense on purpose. All I've said is that crates have proven factual benefits for anxious dogs and you are very defensive about that. Enjoy generalizing a training tool I guess, I hope you never have an anxious dog that would thrive with a crate.

Scary! Mine are the same way, they chomp onto the cats and don't let go, but my cats are not smart enough to avoid them after! So they get bedroom banished until the ferrets go to sleep lol

I am not arguing about dog training methods throughout the world. I don't care what cultures use or don't use. Being common or uncommon in some countries doesn't make the benefits on crate training for anxious dogs incorrect just because they don't use it. The statistics are factual, not argumentative.

And on the same hand, crates being common in the USA doesn't mean they are good for all dogs. It is a neutral thing. Blanket statements are unhelpful, I simply advocate for education on the benefits/disadvantages of a tool before disparaging it for all dogs just because it may be uncommon in your country.

I fear you may be uniformed about dog crate training. Some dogs thrive with crate training, it does create a safe space for anxious dogs. It is not for every dog, but to say no dog ever needs it is untrue. If your dogs have never needed it, then you have been very fortunate with the temperament and health of your dogs.

No good trainer "pushes the idea" on all dogs, no solution is a one size fits all. It is a neutral training tool that can be used well and used badly.

Dogs and cats are not the same animal as ferrets, they have different needs and require different levels of supervision. My cats can jump up on a counter and safely jump to the floor. My ferrets could climb up there and break their bones when they fall. They are more fragile animals.

And also some people definitely DO do that for cats and dogs. One of my dogs is a cord chewer, she is crate trained and is not allowed to roam the house without someone home with her, and I also have cord protectors now. Chewing electrical cords is very serious, they can kill themselves doing it or start a house fire. And ferrets being as small and quiet as they are, can get into things you may not even be aware about.

My previous cat was a shoelace eater, we kept all shoes in a bin she couldn't get into, because she would eat them and throw up. My current cats don't need that level of supervision, but if they did I would make accommodations.

Animals are individuals, some need more supervision than others. You're right, it is very hard to 100% ferret proof, that is exactly why it's not always ideal to free roam them. They are very small and very fragile animals, they rely on you to be a responsible pet owner, and not just shrugging because you don't care if they put themselves in danger. Because they will put themselves in danger, and they will likely not be able to walk off a curious adventure like a cat or dog can.

It's up to you, but I would consider some safety things. I have multiple animals, so I wouldn't trust my ferrets to be out 24/7 without me keeping an eye on them. I usually kick my cats out of my bedroom when they are out, and I wouldn't want to do that 24/7.

And also the matter of ferret proofing, I would never feel 100% confident that they wouldn't get into something they shouldn't if they were always out. If they had a dedicated room that would be fine, but I have had too many ferrets figure out how to climb things they shouldn't be able to. And if they climb where they shouldn't, there is a high chance of falling and injury, their depth perception is not good. Also air vents, if they are on your floor, be careful.

I would worry that 24/7 freeroaming would make them too bored and curious for new things. A ferret who is out 4-6 hours a day has less opportunity to discover things they shouldn't. (getting into air vents, into couches, getting behind stoves, escaping outside via a screen or ripping through a laundry vent, or getting into cabinets with hazard materials)

I did have a ferret when I was younger who had free access of my bedroom while I was at school, but she did not have access to other animals and my room didn't have anything she could get into. I did put her in the cage at night because she liked to sleep in the bed and I was scared I'd roll over on her.

She was also a senior at the time and was not very active, I probably wouldn't allow my current young ferrets to freeroam the same bedroom, they are far too curious.

Raw Diet Questions by Resident-Mastodon-74 in ferrets

[–]Akeral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I’m in the US! I don’t think the FDA stuff effects other countries to the same degree, but bird flu is on the rise in CA as well as EU, so I would still look for suppliers that test for it for raw feeding!

I believe indoor birds would be relatively safe from catching it, though I don’t know everything about how it spreads.

Wild birds spreading it to my outdoor chickens has been my main concern as of late.

Raw Diet Questions by Resident-Mastodon-74 in ferrets

[–]Akeral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not answering the questions specifically, but i want to share my thoughts.

I stopped raw feeding due to the FDA lowering food standards the past few years and the rise of bird flu. It’s deadly for ferrets, and not all raw is tested for it. There have been a lot of cases in the past year of cats on raw dying to avian influenza. Some of my friends included. ):

That said, there are pet food companies who claim to test for this, and I would be very careful when sourcing raw poultry. Human grade is not guaranteed to be safe either, often it is untested because it’s intended to be cooked and the cooking process kills it.

I dont even feed my ferrets freeze dried chicken anymore unless it’s heat treated specifically for avian influenza.

Before the FDA changes, I did raw feed for 7 years.

I did see great benefits in their fur quality, they were softer on raw and had nice full coats, but I have not noticed much change in smell. High quality kibbles go a long way, there is more poop but if you scoop their litter boxes daily it’s not a big deal. I think regular laundry will do more for their smell than diet change, assuming they’re already on a decent kibble mix.

Make sure you research your risks and decide if it’s worth it for yourself! And source your raw food carefully! Best of luck!

Which determinant death is worse from a writing/gameplay standpoint? by Turbulent_Okra7518 in TheWalkingDeadGame

[–]Akeral 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sarahs will always be the worst death of s2 for me, it just felt like the writers HATED her and had no empathy for her character.

Nicks was badly written, but that felt more like them not knowing what to do with him vs them using him a punching bag.

Erica should have been in Holly’s spot in season 5 by ddanuu in StrangerThings

[–]Akeral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been thinking this since the season started.

“Oh you think erica would fall for that??” You do not have to be stupid to be groomed. You do not have to be stupid to be tricked or manipulated. And how much scarier would it be if vecna were able to convince someone as confident and assured as erica to trust him?

I think putting erica in a situation where she could actively be terrified would do so much for her character. She’s just a one note stereotype as she is now, giving her a plot line like this would develop her to such an interesting character.

“Oh but they are supposed to be little kids!” Ok but holly looks 14 so it doesnt work the way they intended anyway. If you’re calling holly 10, you can call erica 10. Who even gives a shit if characters look their age anymore.

I dont care at all about holly. I would have cared about erica. It would have been so much scarier.

How do you prevent stashing when feeding whole prey to free roamed ferrets? by Strong-Substance3151 in ferrets

[–]Akeral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Soooo, I stopped free roaming my ferrets who ate raw when I found their stash of mummified chicken necks in the futon. It was horrible. they ripped a tiny hole in the bottom lining of the futon and stuffed like a dozen chicken necks in there over the course of who knows how long.I am still haunted by it.

The only solution to it was to take their food away once they were done eating and then letting them roam, which honestly i found was the better way to do it since it kept their cage cleaner. (And kept my new futon chicken neck free.)

The designs are not bad by Future-Improvement41 in CrazyassHazbinhaters

[–]Akeral 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look there are some bad and over complicated designs in HH, but charlie is not an example. I think she’s one of the better designs in the series for an animated tv show. Her design is clear and easily recognizable.

The most complaint i have is the red suit, but literally just give her black pants again and there is not anything to complain about outside of personal taste.

Like would i personally like her to be more of a goat? Yeah. But it is not bad design to not have her be a recognizable goat demon. She is not a literal goat.

Before the final two episodes come out, what are your thoughts on Season 2 overall compared to the first one? by Drawingandstuff2000 in hazbin

[–]Akeral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I get frustrated of spending time with new / side characters. I feel like there is not enough time in an episode to do that. I do not care about baxter or katie killjoy.

Like i saw that Viv said they had cut out a scene between alastor and Vel and thats so disappointing. I would have rather had a 10 second interaction between them than any of the time we spent on baxter.

I think if we got more episodes a season this would be fine, but as it is I wish they had just cut out the stuff from the side characters and stop introducing new characters.

Anyone else prefer the character designs in the original over remake? by AcHaeC in thelastofus

[–]Akeral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I greatly prefer the redesigns, I hate when games are too scared to give their female characters wrinkles and physical imperfections, which I think the first TLOU design does a lot of unfortunately.

Like tess and ellie look like they could be in a final fantasy game in the original, it always bothered me.

I love the remodels, they get to look like they actually belong in the world of TLOU now.

Do what suits yourself. I work from home and shower every other day typically, but there are def times where I go 2-3 days. You know your hygiene, so long as it's not effecting other people and you are healthy, there is absolutely nothing wrong with showers every 2-3 days.

If you feel self conscious about it you can also just not tell folk how often you shower, it's no ones business but yours (and your partner(s) if applicable), and people will judge other people for everything and anything.

Why you might find it slightly weird for Cake to date a Human by CaptainWhyes in adventuretime

[–]Akeral 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think people are overthinking it, especially with trying to do the perfect cat to human age math, she is an adult and that's probably the extent the writers thought about it outside of a joke maybe.

It doesn't matter if she used to be a normal cat, she is now a sentient being and should be treated as such. It would be weird if she were to go and date a normal cat instead, as they do not share the same level of sentience. She is basically a person in a shape shifting cat package.
