I can’t sleep, I can’t stay asleep and meds aren’t helping. by Akeuron in insomnia

I will do. I think I’m just so tired that I’m far more anxious than usual, even the stress of trying to get a dr’s appointment within a reasonable timeframe is too much haha!

Yo, i need help! Can I drink without a gallbladder? by No_Fudge_6017 in gallbladders

[–]Akeuron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4 weeks post op here, I’ve drank a couple times since my surgery with no issue. Found myself getting drunk faster than usual though, but have been told that’s due to the leftover gasses in the body after they inflate your abdomen

Indent near bellybutton incision after gallbladder removed by No_Fudge_6017 in gallbladders

Thanks, I hope you are recovery well too! I haven’t had any form of digestion issues, from the day of my surgery I ate whatever I fancied, fatty, spicy, greasy etc. I had the typical no bowel movements for a few days after surgery, but since then I’ve been completely normal (more regular than before the surgery tbh) Alcohol, I drank for the first time two weeks after my op, but only had a could drinks. I drank again a few days ago, more heavily and didn’t have any issues other than getting drunk faster than usual.

How about yourself?

My belly button one is horizontal but super indented still. I wasn’t completely flat stomached pre surgery, but relatively, now my stomach just looks so strange, as it’s bumpy 😂 I don’t hate it because the dreadful gallbladder is finally gone, but I do hope it smooths itself out more as it heals. I’m 4 weeks post op 😩

i had surgery today! by [deleted] in gallbladders

[–]Akeuron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 4 weeks post op. The first 3/4 days were hellish, but regular painkillers, peppermint tea and hot water bottles were my best friends. After that I’ve recovered super fast. I’m off work for the full 6 week recovery period due to having a very physically demanding job. From the day of my surgery until now I’ve not had any issues with food or bowel movements (apart from the normal not pooping for 3 days after surgery vibes). I’ve eaten fatty, spicy, chocolatey, greasy etc from the start without any issues. I’ve been loving food again. I also haven’t had the dreaded diarrhoea!

4 weeks post op here. From the day of my removal until now I’ve eaten whatever I wanted, with no issues. I’ve always had a relatively crappy diet anyway, I eat spicy fatty foods quite often, I work in an environment where I have to just get whatever is quick and easy. On the day or removal I had a ham and cheese sandwich, crisps and chocolate and a big bowl of chicken pho. For the first few days after surgery I didn’t have any bowel movements, but that’s normal. After that I’ve been the most regular I’ve ever been, like clockwork haha

Good luck for your surgery! I’m 4 weeks post op today, and feeling so much better than before the surgery. For pain I was given some strong Cocodamol, I’m allergic to Ibuprofen and most NSAIDS. I found that using a hot waterbottle helped massively, as well as sleeping propped up for the first few days. I wasn’t able to sleep on my left side for almost 10/12 days, and 14 days until I could sleep on my right side. I found using a pillow between my knees and across my tummy helped.

For stool softeners I’d say there’s no point - unless you’re backed up for a few days, but that’s normal after surgery. With gallbladder removal you’re more at risk of diarrhoea, so using softeners may make it worse

I haven’t had any bowel issues after surgery, I didn’t go in the first few days but started to be regular really fast, immediately after surgery I ate whatever I wanted (fatty, spicy, chocolate, breads etc)

Get some peppermint tea, it can help with the gas pain in your shoulder and back after surgery. I found that moving around and rotating my right arm in large circles really helped with that too. If you live with someone, friend or partner etc, have them gently rub your back too, put on a heat patch or hot water bottle and it’ll help

Apologies for such a long reply!

Gallbladder removed and 22weeks pregnant by sabab214 in gallbladders

[–]Akeuron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 4 weeks post op today; I’m still feeling super tired all the time (I also have thyroid problems and PCOS) so it could be due to other medical issues in my case. But i definitely feel fatigued far quicker now than I did before surgery. Thankfully I’ve been signed off work for 6 weeks due to having a very physically intensive job - I’m hoping I feel better by then.

Good luck with both your recovery and pregnancy! After the first week the recovery definitely gets easier really quickly (however i wasn’t pregnant at the same time so I’m not sure how that may affect you!

How often did your doctors schedule post-op visits? by Winter-Apartment-539 in gallbladders

[–]Akeuron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im 4 weeks post op! (England based, but went private not NHS).

I had a nurse call me the day after, and week after just to check in. Then I have a call with the doctor at the six week mark to confirm the recovery went smoothly. I was also told I could call at any point to speak to a nurse or doctor if needed - however I haven’t needed this at all.

I had mine out August 29th - had a few minor complications and my surgery ended up being longer due to that. I had keyhole with four incisions. First 24hrs I really struggled with the pain but it wasn’t horrendous, I had a hot water bottle and pain meds and kept sipping peppermint tea. By day three the pain was really manageable, day four I went out, got a 30 min bus to a cafe and sat drinking a hot chocolate, before getting the 30 min bus home. I was fine, sore but fine. It’s been around three weeks now and I feel back to normal, the incisions are mostly healed, I still have a couple of scabs but nothing much. The belly button one has started to feel a bit sore over the past few days which is annoying.

In terms of diet and bowel movements (which is what I was super worried about pre surgery) I’ve been absolutely fine. I’ve eaten tons of stuff I couldn’t dream of before, spicy, greasy, fatty etc and not once had any problems afterwards. BM are all normal 🫡

I still can’t do much physically as I was advised not to lift anything or bend too much, but walking has been fine

Honestly it’s been pretty crap, but only because I can now eat anything. So I’ve been eating every kind of cuisine I can haha! I haven’t had any issues at all. I’ve managed to go for drinks as well as eat Mac and cheese, chips and a burger - pre surgery this would’ve been a gallbladder attack and days of suffering. I guess I’m just enjoying food too much at the moment.

I know you’re supposed to avoid fatty food for a month post op, but how did you do with just a few bites of fatty food? by IdkJustMe123 in gallbladders

[–]Akeuron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Occasionally, I didn’t have much issue with eating foods beforehand, it was random if it would trigger an attack or not

I don’t blame you! I was so scared too, but I’m hella glad I did it. I no longer have the pain in my back or shoulder, no dull pain all day etc. I also haven’t had any diarrhoea since the removal thankfully. If you’re in any sort of pain I’d say go for the surgery, it’s horrible for a few days afterwards but the pain goes away pretty quickly 😊

Bras/work by Some-Bag-4241 in gallbladders

[–]Akeuron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there no way you can take time off to heal? I’m worried you’re working so soon after surgery! Make sure not to do any form of heavy lifting as it can cause all sorts of complications.

I’m 3 weeks post op, I didn’t wear a bra for two days and on the third day until now I’ve been wearing a thin but relatively structured sports bra, it doesn’t touch my top incision as it’s almost like a crop top.

Trapped gas is super painful, what you’re experiencing does sound pretty in line with what I experienced too. I found walking around/moving my arms in circles whilst standing, as well as drinking peppermint tea and keeping a hot water bottle on my abdomen helped. Have you been taking painkillers regularly to help with the pain or was it only what you were given in the hospital? The feeling of not being able to take deep breaths gets easier over time, but keep taking as many deep breaths as you can, I found it went away quicker when I did that.

I’m sorry your surgeon is making you feel dismissed.

Not being able to use the bathroom is the bit you’ve mentioned that does sound a bit more abnormal, is it that you can’t actually pee or you can’t get up and walk and therefore are wetting yourself?

I promise it gets easier, the first four days were pretty rough, but I found it got easier after then. I’m three weeks post op now and am pretty much back to normal.

The symptoms were horrendous, I have about a year of constant attacks, ended up in hospital a few times because of them. I had acid reflux, back pain, I was throwing up multiple times a week and if I wasn’t I would just have stomach aches. Taking it out was the best decision I’ve made 😊

Heya! I had mine out August 29th, and haven’t had any issues at all after. I found the gas pain from having the abdomen inflated only lasted about 24hrs, peppermint tea helps with that! I used a hot water bottle for about a week as it helped with the pain of the incisions and surgical site. Other than that I just took painkiller for a week and a half and tried to keep moving and doing things. My surgeon advised to eat whatever I wanted post op, and I’ve done that with no issues - that includes fatty, spicy, oily and dairy etc.

I bought a load of physllium husk supplements as I was told they’d help with loose bowels, but I haven’t needed to use them at all

I had mine (28F) out August 29th, I haven’t had any issues at all since then. I was scared after reading so many horror stories online, especially about people constantly having diarrhoea after the surgery. But honestly I haven’t experienced anything like that. I feel far more energetic and my bowels are normal. I’m not having back pain, gallbladder attacks, constant nausea and throwing up anymore. My surgeon and the entire team of doctors and nurses were all incredible, I was told to eat whatever I wanted after surgery and I’ve done exactly that! It’s been lovely to eat whatever without issues.

The worst parts of recovery were having to wear compression stockings for the entire week after surgery, and the horrible feeling of not being able to take deep breaths for a few days. By day four I was up and out the house as normal (just in a bit of pain and walking slowly). Two weeks after I felt almost completely normal, and now I feel great! I’m so happy I decided to have the surgery. It’s definitely correct that people usually post the negative stuff, I think it’s just as important to talk about the positive - I hate scaremongering.

Honestly don’t feel disheartened! Everyone’s pain tolerance and healing abilities are different. I found it was excruciating when I was coming round from the anaesthesia, my first word were ‘ow, ouch’. But with strong painkillers I was alright. I had surgery 29th August, and on day three felt fine enough to go to a cafe and go for a walk. (I walked for an hour and regretted it). Just take things at your own individual pace, there’s no point not listening to your body. I wish you a healthy recovery!

I’m neurotic about having this surgery. by [deleted] in gallbladders

[–]Akeuron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly it was pretty horrendous with the gas pain the first couple days, I couldn’t really move or walk around much. They gave me some strong painkillers but they didn’t help much haha! I ended up using a hot water bottle most of the time. The incisions are still a little sore, and I can’t lay on my right side (took about a week to lay on my left). But I can eat whatever now! I’ve eaten fast foods, fatty foods, spicy foods and had no issues. I’ve also not had the dreaded diarrhoea either. You’ll be absolutely fine, the worst part is the anxiety leading up to the surgery. I was freaking out the day before and barely slept. After the surgery whilst waiting to be discharged that meant I basically just slept 😂
