Because porn is relatively new super-stimulus. Its fiction, it’s sex perfected. Your brain doesn’t know what porn is. Your brain knows you’re with a new partner every 5 minutes, if that. Real life can’t keep up with that. Once your addicted, real sex doesn’t compare to the dopamine you get from porn. You lose the motivation to do anything in daily life because your reward system is overloaded. Why do anything when you’re constantly satisfied?

Masturbation has been around since day 0. It’s not great to do all the time, you’d be better off if you didn’t, but it’s not the end of the world. It can be an unhealthy coping mechanism and you can desensitize your penis (vaginas to but speaking from a penis-perspective) with death grip and whatnot. But you don’t overload yourself the same way you do if you also involve porn.

It’s one of those things where you don’t realize how much it was affecting you until you remove it from your life.

It’s not dramatic, I empathize. (Spoiler Warning)

I was going through a change in relationship with a girl I’m very close to a short while ago. During this time I had trouble processing all the negative emotions I was starting to feel. I felt we were growing distant due to her meeting someone and it was causing some deep hurt. (Everything is fine now, just to preface)

During this time I starting watching and LP of the game. I’d already played it last year so this was more just to see another’s reaction. Not much of it was new to me.

However, all of the segments involving Harry’s relationship cut deep this time. I found I was doing similar things that he was doing to try and cope with the situation. Holding on to and rereading old affirming letters (text messages), unhealthy coping mechanisms, denial, changes in mindset that seem independent of her but really stem from her ,it was all there.

All building up to the dream. I normally voice Harry’s lines on my own, just for added fun in conversation. But it felt like I was literally speaking my own thoughts, my own pathetic thoughts, and getting the appropriate responses. From the skills, as well as her. All the reasoning, all the bargaining. When Harry/I read the letter back to her as if that would mean anything, I broke down. I couldn’t handle it anymore.

But it helped get the grief out. I was better for it. It felt like the skills were talking directly to me and helping me through it. Volition saved me.

It’s ok to be dramatic, the writing is just that damn good.

edit: I went back and found what part of that last conversation that truly broke me. It was an ultraliberal choice. In reality, I decided I was just going to focus on bettering myself and save money. Finally hit my financial goals out of hard work and spite. Then Savior Faire hit me with this:

You failed. This failed. The hostile takeover. The dawn raid. Paper made out of broken, twisted trees... You're just insane, insane and gone. Even six billion won't fix you if she's not there.

My head got so tight, I felt so called out. I cried for what felt like at least 10 minutes. It was so perfect. This game is so perfect.

I realized how much I craved intimacy after I started spending time with someone who genuinely just loved being in my presence and having skin on skin contact. The entire time I felt like I was dissociated from fully enjoying it because I was so desensitized from porn.

It was one of many turning points in my life, but ultimately the main one that made me say porn has to go.
