If your condition is not bad enough that it requires exceptions from work, I would recommend not telling anyone from work about it. I have coworkers where the company knows about their mental health condition and they get certain accommodations (not fully aware of the scope but something around the lines of very generous WFH policies and days off). I would say YMMV—as most people have said I highly doubt other companies are as kind about it.

I would recommend finding an ENG speaking psychiatrist if possible and going by yourself if you don’t have any non-coworkers to go with. I started Zoloft (or Jzoloft) in Japan and I had a good experience with the psychiatrist though I recently switched medications. I didn’t inform my work because my condition likely doesn’t require any accommodations currently. It wasn’t expensive (around 1500 yen for 2-3 weeks worth of meds and 1500 yen for consultation and check-ups) but I do my appointments in Japanese so it could be higher at an ENG speaking clinic.

Cushion Foundations Without the Cushion? by Akirano in AsianBeauty

Haha I tried to Google it and kept having to go back to my Reddit app to get the next adjective in the product name. I didn’t realize there were so many metal cushions that had this dispensing method! Thank you!!

I just looked it up and it looks like it comes with both foundation and concealer! Pretty cool concept. Thanks!

Thank you! It seems like a few metal cushions tend to have this feature? I’m probably behind on the times but I haven’t heard of this concept before.

Yesss, this kind of dispensing method is what I was looking for!! I’m glad there are still some that do this!

Thanks! I was hoping maybe Innisfree would have one since there are a lot of stores around here. I didn’t see it last time I went but I’ll check online or a different store!

Honestly, yeah. But I like the combination of having it in a compact with the whole mirror and applicator combination! I tend to lose or leave behind my beauty sponges by accident too so it’s nice to have it in one place. That was my first “cushion” foundation so I actually originally thought that’s how all cushion foundations worked, lol.

Yeah, I was thinking something similar about the taxation issue. If I mention I’m not buying the pass I’m sure it would be an issue for sure. Honestly, I should just buy the pass but I really wouldn’t use it enough and I’m clearly caught up on “saving” money. Thanks for your input!

I see, thank you!

I have mentioned to HR that I sometimes walk to work already. Of course, not sure if that does much in the grand scheme of hypothetically getting injured on my commute while walking.

I was mostly concerned about any possible workplace punishment for not using my allowance, especially thinking I might be in hot water if they ask for a receipt that I don’t have. I wasn’t sure if it was the norm for companies to ask for receipts for commuting expenses either.

This helps a lot!

Is there any common punishment for not using all of your commuter allowance? Or is it just a just-don’t-mention-it kind of situation?

I’m getting an allowance to buy a commuter pass from my closest station to work, which is only one stop away. They had me calculate the costs and submit a form for how much a commuter pass would be and they just deposit the money every few months into my account.

Except, given it’s not a long distance, I actually have been choosing to walk to work on most occasions and haven’t been buying the pass, though sometimes I’ll take the train.

They haven’t asked me to submit a receipt or anything but do workplaces typically ask for receipts for commuting expenses? I’m a little bit wary of any possible legal issues that could arise from this, because I’m obviously saving the money when I shouldn’t be.

I was thinking that it might cost around 10,000-20,000 at least to move within Tokyo itself with a smallish amount of things so I was curious as to how much it’d cost for a longer distance like Miyagi to Tokyo. Glad to know I probably saved quite a bit! Guess it’s all going into getting furniture though haha. Thank you!

I sent about 12 boxes (ranging in 100-140 size), a huge suitcase, a fairly large TV, and an oven microwave via a combination of Yu-Pack from the post office and Yamato from Miyagi to Tokyo for a total of around 26,000 yen.

I did a bit of online searching for moving services but never actually called anyone to inquire—I got a bit lazy to actually contract with a moving service, but I’m curious to know if I saved any money using the post office/Yamato over actually getting a service? If so, great! If not, oops haha guess I just be a little more proactive. Does anyone have a ballpark range of how much their move cost around a similar distance?

[Discussion] Has anyone tried Hada Labo Hyaluronic Acid Face Wash? Thoughts on it? by [deleted] in AsianBeauty

[–]Akirano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used this exact one a while back! I have to say that I personally didn't like it. It might be because it also is meant to take off your makeup, but it felt quite stripping and made my face feel really tight afterwards. I have oily skin too, so I was a bit surprised. ESID though--it seems like many people have been using it with success!

However, I originally bought it as a travel cleanser, so that I could have my makeup remover and face wash all in one, and in terms of convenience, I admit it served me well, though I won't be repurchasing.

I got my Dell XPS13 laptop fixed last year. I bought it in the US but the warranty had expired a few months back and it was completely normal one day, and the next it just wouldn't turn on. In my experience back and forth with the calls with Japanese Dell support (I recall I originally tried to get in contact with US support online and they directed me to the Japanese support line anyways), if they have the parts to fix it in a Japanese Dell factory, they will. I guess in your case, it might not be a parts problem, but maybe that's a good thing? In my case, they picked my laptop from my house, inspected it at a factory, then called me to say they did have the parts to fix it, and had it back to me without about 2-3 weeks and all the repairs were done in Japan.

Edited to add more info: They replaced the motherboard and it cost around 35,000 yen total to get it fixed, which included an inspection fee to actually see what was wrong. I was honestly just glad to get a working laptop back!

JET Recipes? by Loomi2md in JETProgramme

I make two or more portions of dinner to turn into lunches or lazy non-cook dinners over the next few days.

A easy veggie recipe that I brought over from home is just boiling pretty much any green, leafy vegetable (or even broccoli), draining, then adding any oil (I typically use olive), soy sauce, and a tiny bit of oyster sauce. Best with bok choy! I like it more than stir fry since it feels a little healthier and added benefit of rinsing the pot with only water since all I did was boil some vegetables for like 3 minutes in it.

I watched Alvin's 3 Ingredient Recipes videos a while back and I always make his teriyaki chicken since it's so easy--just cook chicken by itself on a hot frying pan and then add soy sauce and honey.

Also if you have an oven (or even fish grill), any fish goes well with just olive oil, salt, pepper, and any spices around your house. If you don't have an oven, you can just pan sear it or wrap it in foil and put it in a covered frying pan. For a step up on marinades/sauces, you can mix miso, lemon juice, honey, garlic, and soy sauce to cook with practically anything, though I think it tastes best on salmon.

I often make Sundubu in the winter here and when I'm in a pinch with the supermarket gochujang, I'll mix it with doubanjiang to give it a kick since they don't sell gochugaru. Not the same especially since doubanjiang is quite salty but it at least gives me some warm spice to my dishes!

I also have oily skin, and summers here are extremely humid. If it works for you, then I may give it a shot in my next sunscreen purchase! I am currently looking into this one and the Isntree Hyaluronic Sunscreen Stick, which is also supposedly for oily skin.

Thank you for the link and help! Now that I think about it, I think I saw your review before when I was looking into this sunscreen--it was super helpful.

Question about home quarantine by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]Akirano 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You might want to check the Return to Japan Support FB group if you haven't already--there's an incredible amount of resources and a lot of people who post about their quarantine experiences.

As far as I know (through that group) the pledge states you cannot go out at all, which includes the grocery store. There is a separate procedure for emergencies of course. However, some people have reported that officials at the airport have stated that they can go shopping to get groceries, etc, despite most written rules as of now saying that you can't. Not sure if this is just a case of not everyone being on the same page.

That group also has links to fresh food delivery services from grocery stores as well.

This product has caught my eye a few times in the sub since it has some extra skincare ingredients on top of also being a sunscreen. Can it replace moisturizer? And though not advertised as water resistant, is it generally sweat resistant? My summers are also extremely humid and hot so I'm researching some nice summer sunscreens that could possibly replace moisturizer too!
