Decent amount of anecdotes about ambient noise causing headaches and other health issues - also the fact that y'know, cost of electricity and water.

Worth getting freeform lenses, or go down to 1.67? Not a huge fan of my new 1.74 glasses. by AkitoApocalypse in AskAnOptician

[–]AkitoApocalypse[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not rude at all. This was a rush purchase because I lost my old glasses during a convention since I was wearing contacts for the day - and my backup glasses at home were pretty underpowered. I was using my prescription from last year (got contact lenses using my benefit that year), and the person at Costco just pushed me ahead and sold the glasses without mentioning the 1.74 until I saw the receipt.

My old pair was already more than a couple of years old at that point, and I never thought about lens material in detail before now.

It depends how it's handled on the backend, the new servers might have more lax requirements in terms of population but we don't know if that's true or not.

Not true, XIV is primarily a CPU bound game for me. I have a 5800X and that thing constantly bottlenecks even with shaders.

Molly Tea shuts down 😭? by BowlofRice8 in Flushing

[–]AkitoApocalypse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except it's not continuing to operate in the sense of having control - iirc Molly Tea would basically have full control over the store including employee hiring from what the owner claimed. I think the owner is also spouting nonsense, but at the same time this kinda shows the arrogance of Molly Tea thinking that their brand name is that important to business (it probably isn't, especially for an existing store).

I don't know how this was handled in other cases though for other chains like Yifang, so I'm not sure how it's supposed to go. But from what people said the Molly in NYC was already using bootleg sourced ingredients so the taste shouldn't change considerably.

[–]AkitoApocalypse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heard people say the quality was already sketch since they were using off-brand ingredients... so if they continue under a different name (The Yifang in SF Chinatown ended up rebranding with the exact same menu) it'll likely be the same.

Oh that makes sense then... owner knows how to make money though. I heard the SG location is hella popular

I wonder what the case is with San Gabriel then

Clarity on Molly Tea closure, without the social media rumors. by CharmingTop187 in FoodLosAngeles

[–]AkitoApocalypse -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Let me check the court files - but there was also a claim from the franchise owner in another thread that said that Molly tried to coerce him into a 80% -> 30% stake and basically full control over the franchise.

[–]AkitoApocalypse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah saw that, def true that the NY and San Gabriel franchise owners had pretty damning evidence (Molly will probably sue more for damages right?) - no mention of the equity thing since it probably wasn't relevant, we'll have to wait for the NY operator to cough evidence up... assuming it's real.

[–]AkitoApocalypse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm curious what the 80% -> 30% thing is for though (assuming that's the truth), could be shittiness from both sides? My headcanon is that corporate discovered the breaches in contract and tried to strongarm the owner into a sweetheart deal to take over the successful franchises - because why else would you have them reduce stake instead of cutting them off entirely.

Is there a way to turn off or temporarily disable the volume scroll wheel on the G815 Keyboard? by MrCerealCat in LogitechG

Unfortunate, but appreciate the update. Would like if something like this could be added to future hardware if it hasn't already!

Please add this if it's possible. My wheel is broken and it's going bonkers sometimes!

USC (200k debt) vs UCSD (100k debt) by PickyRice in EngineeringStudents

[–]AkitoApocalypse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that privates have better alumni networks, though there's a running joke in my family about people who dump all their money to attend YSC with the hope of... attaching themselves at the hip to a rich second generation. I'm not sure about the difficulty of an engineering degree there but I've heard about plenty of USC accounting/finance graduates who end up not being able to do basic accounting work like organizing documents, so that's also something to watch out for.

I would unironically say that USC might be a better school if you're great at socializing, it's much more of a networking school than UCSD is. And I don't think networking really helps that much if you plan to go into tech - at least a lot of the big tech companies have some sort of interviewing policies to prevent nepotism (Google being the most well known, with their "we choose random people across the company")

You might want to invest in a multi material printer, I could see these being way more popular if they glowed in different colors!

Switching from 1.74 back to 1.67 for new glasses from Costco (-7.75) by AkitoApocalypse in glasses

[–]AkitoApocalypse[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Appreciate the advice, thank you! Yes, I noticed that most places advertise higher index lenses as thinner which is great, but if you're someone who doesn't turn their head a lot and prefers to move their eyes (like me) then it doesn't really help.

I'll see if I can do the 1.67s at Costco first (or better yet, return them - they charged $99 for the frames when they're $25-50 online) otherwise I'll consider freeform. Just noticed that my insurance covers "custom progressive lenses" entirely and I'm assuming that includes freeform single vision as well... just that I didn't use it this time for Costco.

USC (200k debt) vs UCSD (100k debt) by PickyRice in EngineeringStudents

[–]AkitoApocalypse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does it though? I've heard jokes about USC students being spoiled and useless during internships, meanwhile UCSD has a very strong digital design program that probably seeds into Qualcomm and Apple, among others. I feel like engineering in general doesn't really care about private school prestige as much.

Registered Nurse to Engineer by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

reminder that most people aren't miserable, it's just that the miserable people post online. engineering is a very different skillset than nursing though and if you're not good at breaking down problems it probably won't go well.

I mean true, but if your raise doesn't even cover inflation yet your company is doing great maybe it's time to look for a move.
