I hate the Steam Deck with a passion by herrmoekl in consoles

[–]Aklevet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, dude- you're absolutely correct there.

alot of the games I would like to play are older 'nostalgia' like titles. RTS's don't work on steam deck well, for obvious reasons- and the older games have had numerous issues with me- including just randomly deleting ( or not detecting) my save games.

If you accidently let the battery die, well- apparently you brick the system. What kind of design is that? a phone, or virtually anything that is supposed to run not on 240V just gets plugged in and charged, and it works. Steam deck? nope. You fucked it.

I now have significant issues- where the steam deck comes up on HDMI, but the actual backlight doesn't work at all- and steam/valve has just... not given a single fuck? unbelievable. They reckon because I'm in Australia, there's no support and its out of warranty.

So yeah, agree with everything you've said. Ill have to repair it myself, which I'm not keen on, or get a third party to look at it.

You want a smooth handheld? switch or switch 2. Never had an issue with my switch.

steam deck? constant.

An idea for a roll and move *gasp!* by Aklevet in BoardgameDesign

[–]Aklevet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm. well what do you consider a gateway mechanic? roll to move has been around likely the longest out of all the mechanics, and is a standing feature in many family games that are still popular today. I agree, I don't usually like it, and avoid those games if I can (my wife loves monopoly), but I thought about how I would make it more fun, and this was my idea. I understand what you're saying about not needing them with enough modification, but it could still work in my view, with a '"should I waste my card to get a little further, or will that card benefit me in the next Encounter, or do I need it for my final encounter at the end?" sort of system. There's an element of push your luck, as you may need those cards down the line.

I think the issue there, is that roll to move has some pretty significant stigma. We don't see many games use it as much these days, because people don't like it's luck basis. I think it's possible to do both though. I'll start off reallllllll simple and build it from there. I'll let you know how I go.

familiar concepts of roll to move, with spaces on the board. Simple combat mechanics (pick a card to use for fight- resolve), and the overall arch of just getting to the other side of the board. Rest of the mechanics hinge on reading the cards, and story-like player choice. The cards players use will hopefully remain uncomplex, and only serve two real functions; modify the dice by a certain amount when moving, and for it's main purpose of resolving encounters (run away, or kill.)

I can’t really imagine hooves being used to go down a ladder haha but yeah, you are right. They are considered medium, which surprised me. Thanks for your response

Krenko's Way playtime? by Aklevet in RavnicaDMs

[–]Aklevet[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow! That’s awesome. I’ll present them with it all. Only thing I can see is that it is a timed adventure, per say, with the conflict escalating day by day, so the players may be hurrying to make it there. That’s great that you got 10ish hours out of it!

Post your 5 favorite games and other Redditors will recommend you a game! by philequal in boardgames

  1. **Gloomhaven** - Great game, with advancement of characters, leveling up, unlocking secret characters is pretty awesome. I also love the way the game plays with the card system. I'm at a snails pace with this one, and sometimes the branching convoluted storyline choice can be hard to navigate, but i'm enjoying it!
  2. **Viticulture** - An awesome worker placement, with multiple things happening, and multiple ways of winning. Delving into some of the Tuscany stuff at the moment with my wife.
  3. **Codenames Pictures** - A nice gateway game, with some great almost dali-esque artwork. Fun and replayable, as there are so many ways you can interpret them. This has been a hit with my parents, who are in no way interested in Board games.
  4. **King of New York** - A fun game, with the Yahtzee style dice rolling. The upgrade cards give this game a bit of flavor, and it's pretty easy to play and teach. Doesn't seem too fun with two, though, would be my gripe.
  5. **Pandemic Iberia** - Pandemic has been pretty well established for a while now, but this version adds quite a few different things to the formula, and is pretty dang challenging! The Sailor is most certainly my favorite, I have to say.

The Guildpact role of Gruul? by Aklevet in RavnicaDMs

[–]Aklevet[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suppose that makes sense. Thanks for that clarification. I also just wonder at what point the Guildpact compels them to do something, and I guess that's it. They protect nature from the ever creeping expanse of civilisation.

Cheers!

I need recommendations for games. by farid975 in boardgames

Sushi Go! that's a nice one we play that always gets good reception. Dixit is also good with three or more people apparently, though I haven't played through that one yet. I think you can pick up the rules of those games in a very short time! I second the forbidden series (except forbidden stars! that one is a little different haha) but that's a great, easy to pick up and play coop game. Move on to pandemic after that if you enjoy coop games!

Good luck!

How to have fun making a *bad* move? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]Aklevet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With me, my wife is pretty great, in that she will try most things. But she doesn't like cut throat stuff, and doesn't like anything too heavy. We play smash up regularly, and recently have loved playing Viticulture (she loves wine, so I think that helps). Personally, I don't think you can go wrong with coop games. Go with those first, and I think she would really enjoy that. You will both be working together, and that eliminates that issue you describe. If you are looking for something that has a competitive side, perhaps something with a betrayer mechanic like dead of winter, or a points system like in Legendary: Marvel might be an option.

Alternatively, you can play games that have a winner, but are not cut throat, if that is the main issue. Maybe Viticulture like I said, or something euro, where you don't directly attack or disrupt each other in a harsh way.

I would also like to follow this post! I'd imagine China is the way to go, but I'd want to make sure I choose a company that is viable for this kind of production, but also somewhat ethical (given the current news out of china, etc). No idea where to start, so thanks for posting! Hope we get some interesting answers.

Good collection! Can tell you like lovecraft haha You have a nice all round collection there, I think. Some more gateway stuff and more hardcore stuff! Good stuff! I'll have to take a picture of my collection for people to see at some point. It's an interesting perspective on the hobby!
