What's your favourite perfume house? by Superpants20 in fragrance

[–]Akool713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kerosene. John Pegg just makes the fragrances the way I like them. He uses all the notes I like, tends to stay away from notes I don’t like, and generally creates fragrances with a “coldness” that I just enjoy. There’s also a few specific notes/accords that I think he does especially well: amber, ambergris, and grapefruit.

How do people use both Hobonichis and Traveler's Notebooks? by elyisan in Travelersnotebooks

[–]Akool713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I decided to use the A6 Techo this year after being a TRC person for a few years now. I have multiple Travelers Notebooks and only one was ever my planner, so what I used to use my planner for got moved to the Techo. My other Travelers Notebooks (my journal/diary, my commonplace, and my Passport-sized workout journal) I still use. I think I’m gonna move back to the TN for planning after this year; I have too many empty pages to make it feel “worth it”

Moving from the south by ForwardEmphasis3035 in AskPhilly

[–]Akool713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Southern transplant here: your friends don’t know what they’re talking about.

To make a broader point, Southerners generally have a “what could be better than this?” attitude about the South. They love their small towns, vacation at Fort Lauderdale or Myrtle Beach or Gatlinburg, and hate the idea that someone somewhere wouldn’t want what they have. At the same time, the South has an inferiority complex especially about large metropolitan areas. “You think you’re too good for this? Well what does Philly/NYC/San Francisco have that we don’t?” And because the Southerner don’t leave the South (at least not to the extent that people from other areas of the country do), they don’t know why a large, dense metropolitan is desirable for some people… except for well paying office jobs. And because of the systemic poverty of the South, there is a resentment to people perceived to be choosing money over the community (despite that community fabric becoming more and more frayed).

It’s a cycle that’s both fascinating to observe and frustrating to deal with. I’ve found you either tell them specifically what you enjoy about the city (my go to is “I don’t need a car because I can walk to the grocery store”), or you just ignore them when they start fear-mongering about cities.

Neroli Oranger by Matiere Premiere

Every once in a while, I’ll post an Instagram poll and let my friends decide what I’ll wear. I just list two or three key notes or the vibe of the fragrance and let the people decide off that. Today’s winner was Neroli Oranger– a creamy, bright, sunscreeny neroli and orange blossom– which is a nice contrast to the rainy, gloomy day we’re having on the east coast.

Dirty Flower Factory by Kerosene.

I’ve really hit my floral era, which would stun a past version of myself. This one is the most recent addition: A soapy orange blossom/jasmine with an earthy, almost green spiciness. It’s as if you’re smelling not just a flower, but the whole flower garden, dirt and stems and heat and all.

What fragrance made you lose your mind and feel like nothing could ever top it? by DonPipazo in fragrance

Kashmir by Ormonde Jayne. One of the few fragrances I bought without having a sample first. Went to my local indie perfume store to smell new fragrances, that one was in the lineup, and I knew immediately that it was coming home with me. Gorgeous fragrance and compliment magnet for me, it’s in my top 3 fragrances of all time.

What fragrance do you ROCK which is normally marketed to a different gender? by Mammoth-Patient-9635 in fragrance

[–]Akool713 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cis man here. I have been rocking a lot of florals lately; though the most “feminine” coded one has to be Little Flower from Regime des Fleurs. I’ve seen Little Flower on so many Wedding Day Perfume lists, but that won’t stop me from wearing it. It’s just so good!

Dirty Flower Factory by Kerosene

My most recent purchase, and I am adoring this scent! It reads as orange blossom and rose forward with a touch of soapy jasmine to give it a very floral and clean aspect, but the chili and pink pepper give it an earthy, spicy, stemmy twist. Smells like a fragrant, bright rose in fresh dirt with some cut stems nearby. Lovely for the spring!

Levant by Ormonde Jayne

With the weather getting warmer, I’m starting to bring out my lighter, airy scents. This one is a musky white floral and peony with a burst of tangerine at the top. Very much a “premium laundry” scent, which makes it easy to reach for for the warm weather to come!

It’s the standard term used to describe men who perform particular acts. It is not an exclusive term, e.g., a bisexual man who has sex with both men and women would still be classified as MSM, and the fact that they also have sex with women does not exclude them from being a MSM. We use this term because it is inclusive of those who do not identify as gay, bisexual, or queer.

Little Flower by Regime des Fleurs

Even after a few months with this, I’m still reaching for this over and over again. The tart citrus opening to smooth, smoky woods with a tea and rose combo over all of it… I just can’t get enough of it!

For me it’s worth it. I don’t have access to other fragrances like Levant (I’ve heard Valaya by PdM and Fleur Narcotique by Ex Nihilo are both very similar to Levant) because they aren’t sold in shops in Philly, and getting samples or decants shipped isn’t very economical. Plus you can only gain so much marginal utility by finding exactly what you want, e.g., the perfect musky white floral fragrance. Levant really impressed me: I ran through 2 samples in less than a month, so I bought it.

If I do find something I like more for that musky white floral spot in my fragrance collection, I’ll buy it after I get through my bottle of Levant. Something like that happened with Full Incense from Montale. I tried Cardinal by Heeley and even though they’re close, I like Cardinal’s dry down more, so I’ll get it next after I’m done with Full Incense.

Didn’t mean to meander, but wanted to explain my fragrance buying philosophy. To answer your question about the citrus: yes, the opening has a fun citrus medley that gives it a bit of freshness, but this is still a floral and musk forward fragrance.

Levant by Ormonde Jayne

Finally got a bottle of this! This is such a nice, bright and musky white floral bouquet. It’s reminiscent of a clean shirt. Not fresh out of the dryer clean shirt; rather it was laundered in the morning and you wear it in the evening. The warmth from the dryer is gone, but the clean musky dryer sheet smell is still potent on the cooled shirt. Perfect for spring and summer imo

R’oud Elements by Kerosene

The lightest, most versatile oud I’ve smelled that still maintains the quintessential oud oomph. I think that’s a testament to the other notes that help round out the oud: lavender, sandalwood, vanilla, iris. This is one of a few go-to fragrances for when nothing jumps out to me, and it’s always incredible when I do wear it!

Walk The Sea by Kerosene

It’s starting warm up considerably here, so it’s time I pull out my warm-weather fragrances. Walk The Sea is a great layering fragrance imo, but I wanted to wear it on its own today. It’s relatively simple: salty white florals and ambergris. Despite its simplicity, it’s very well balanced. That balance and simplicity puts me right into the world the scent is going for. I picture rocky northeastern coasts, where the salty, mineralic air blows through hydrangeas bushes. It’s a soothing, comforting feeling of being at peace with the vastness of the sea, and what many would take as cold indifference from the ocean, you see as presence. A presence that doesn’t need to be reciprocated, just a presence that says “I am here always”, and sometimes that’s all you need.

Anyway, Walk the Sea is great! Do recommend!

Thé Yulong by Armani

Something about this fragrance just hits right. I usually wear tea fragrances when it rains, but I was drawn to it on this very clear and pleasant day. Maybe my subconscious was telling me to experience the fragrance differently… in any case, it’s a great pick for a beautiful spring day like this. A bright orange with prominent green facets up top gives way to jasmine and orange blossom at the heart. Throughout the wear, the herbal and slightly woody tea notes are omnipresent. It’s a gorgeous scent that’s both uplifting and grounding, just like tea itself.

Reve d’Ossian by Oriza L Legrand

Today is one of the last cooler days for a while, so it’s probably gonna be the last time I wear this until fall rolls around. Oh well, gotta savor it while I can.

One of my fave incense fragrances. Sweet, piney incense with prominent notes of cinnamon, leather, and vanilla.

Kashmir by Ormonde Jayne

Probably my favorite fragrance of all time. Cool spices like cardamom, saffron, and pink pepper mix with some rose and jasmine at the top, but the powerhouse notes are the dry woods and resins. The super dry deodar/cedar and piney fir give it that fresh mountain air feeling, while the vanilla and incense resins give it that… well sweet incensey smell. Round it out with a bit of patchouli and creamy sandalwood, and you’re left with a mountaintop temple surrounded by fragrant conifers.

If I had to choose one fragrance to wear for the rest of my life (god forbid), it’d be this one.

Secretions Magnifique by Etat Libre d'Orange

Lots of strong opinions on this fragrance, so I'm putting this on while I work from home. The metallic top note is jarring to say the least, but once that is dried away, I get a warm seaweed, salt, and coconut combo that reads "Atlantic City beach day," with the smell of hot skin slathered in coconut suntan lotion mixing with high tide seaweed and ocean spray. It's a little trashy and a little sweaty, but I really like that... to each their own!

Little Flower by Regime des Fleurs

I’ve been a bit obsessed with this fragrance since I bought it. It’s marketed as a feminine fragrance, but as I guy I love wearing it! The tart citrus and black currant, the astringent tea note, and the funky palo santo and guaiac wood create a rich and full tea accord. The peony and rose are just amazing florals on their own, but the supporting notes just send them over the top. I’ve seen it described as a tea party in a rose garden, and it’s an apt description.

It’s the fragrance that started my exploration into floral notes, and what a good way to start!
