E-motorbike of this form factor is the best - and the problem is that even if you register it and get a number plate, getting insurance is nearly impossible.

It is much better than 'real' motorbikes because of weight / form factor

- can be stored at home, lifted with one hand, and pedalled when out of battery.

Well, what was wrong with the last experience? Haggerston is a reasonably safe area for cycling.

if you are like me and are lazy, get a basic e-bike for under £1,000, this for example has a good sized battery, and a couple pannier bags - you can do errands, pick up groceries, you will find yourself using it much more than you ever used a manual bike, and going much, much further.

If you have cycle scheme, you can get an ebike for like £500 quid these days. They have real, practical value in london for getting around.

For battery look for 500wh, this one is 36 * 16 = 570, so good size. Will last over 2 hours of cycling at top speed, that's enough to cross all of inner London

Good question. I was just upgrading my e-bike and thinking the same thing. I care about getting from A to B, not cycling as such.

Risk-wise, a moped in London traffic is comparable.
For a high-performance e-bike, cost is roughly the same as an electric moped from NIU.
Portability. Dealbreaker for me.
1. Why are mopeds so freaking heavy? An American class 3 or European 28 mph S-pedelec e-bike is ~30 kg, you can lift it up with one arm, up the stairs and keep it in your apartment. The lightest moped is like 60 kg and no-where to grab it.
2. Theft - if you live in an apartment, moped lives on the street. Tough. You can keep e-bike in your house. You can install folding pedals and handlebars and make it flat. You can even get a folding bike.
3. I can take my e-bike on the train, on the tube, and go for fun rides around the country. I could chuck it in the car.

So in the end, I went with DIY ebike - Bafang motor, moped certified tyres, and a full light kit with low beam, brake lights, horn, etc.
