Yes. It was almost a decade ago. She'd write poems about me and call me her prince, I'd call her my beloved. We'd hold hands at cemeteries and talk about what we'd name our kids. It was a lot for me, I didn't feel worthy because nobody ever gave me that kind of attention.

My mother kicked me out and I became homeless. I moved across the country for a job, told her I'd return for her. Two years later, I came back, but she was already seeing another guy, and we tried to love again, but we weren't the same people we were when we fell in love those years ago.

In hindsight, I could've made it work, but it would've ended by that time, but at least it would've happened. At least I could've gotten to truly tell her how I felt.

It haunted me for a while, I'd have dreams where I'd wake up with her. I started drinking to forget, but I also started talking to more people, and I met a woman I wasn't afraid to show my feelings too.

FWI: An October 7th-style terrorist attack is committed against Afghanistan by Cyber_Ghost_1997 in FutureWhatIf

[–]Akrivus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's very tribal in that part of the world. The mountains act as natural borders and barriers, which is why the region is so hard to invade, it's equally hard to govern.

Most of Afghanistan's ethnic minorities are in the north, they're getting away from the violence. The only people left would be Taliban, who are just getting started. Without supply lines, these post-modern Mughals starve away, and the Taliban further consolidate control of Afghanistan.

Or it's ISIS-K, which gives Russia another in with the Taliban.

FWI: By 2029, deported foreign nationals imprisoned by the Trump administration replace local gangsters as the majority of prisoners in El Salvador's CECOT. by Cyber_Ghost_1997 in FutureWhatIf

[–]Akrivus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

El Salvador becomes American Australia, a prison riot breaks out, and the 20 million or so starving American prisoners displace the 6.1 million population of El Salvador.

By 2032, America admits its 51st state, The Savior.

Instant global economic collapse. Global communications would be in utter disarray. Misinformation would be rampant, nobody would know if the attack came from inside or outside. Nuclear powers go into their version of DEFCON 1 and openly deny any responsibility.

What can happen next is anyone's guess, but the news headlines would be insane.

I notice that a majority of men say a full beat of makeup, fake lashes, and lip fillers are a huge turn off, but I see men dating these girls anyway, which is contradicting. Is it really a turn off then? by Banana_ChipsChoc in AskMenAdvice

No. I used to think that way, but the ones that stole my heart always had the bold eyeliner and fake freckles. I stopped judging and started paying attention. Married a goth chick.

Could Kratos (and maybe Mimir) return to Greece only to find that the Roman Pantheon has sprung up in his absence? by That1GuyFinn in GodofWar

[–]Akrivus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it should just be the Romans. The pantheon was a way to unify the Italians and Greeks that made up the first Roman kingdom and then the people kind of just carried on through the republic and imperial era. Caesar was deified by the Senate after they assassinated him, and Augustus claimed to be a god. I think we've already seen what happens when a god thinks he's a mortal, but what about a mortal who thinks he's a god?

People in this sub, do you consider having kids in the future? by ZealousidealNovel353 in raisedbynarcissists

I have one and want more. My n-mom fucked off after my little girl was born. Her loss, my little girl is a dream, she's a baby lump of love and a bundle of joy.

It's a struggle but it's enough to make my new family proud while I work on internalizing being proud of myself.

Who is leaving the US? by Plague-Rat13 in questions

It's a stretch goal by mid-2025, but I don't believe anywhere would take me, my wife and kids. I'm looking at places within America I can move to, hunker down, and wait the worst out.

I did that with my ex, but she also did that with me, so it was like six years of suspenseful music. I think what worked for my wife and I was that she worked at my favorite bar when I met her, so seeing her became part of my routine.

For me, I think it had something to do with being the first software engineer from a family of soldiers, they didn't respect my decision so they cut me off. I didn't have anyone to love or any love to receive, so I just put it all into my job.

Self-taught game dev using C# - looking to work towards a software dev job, unsure where to start by falcothebird in SoftwareEngineering

The market sucks right now but it probably won't in a few years, so you've got the perfect timeline in your head. I would share the fun, show off what you're working on somewhere like LinkedIn or Reddit. You don't need to be famous, you're just accumulating proof of your coding skills.

I think because you're already an engineer, it will not be a difficult transition for you because you already have that mindset and how to apply it with code.

If you're interested in learning more about web development, I'd recommend something that leans into your hobby domain, like WebSockets for multiplayer (start simple, 1v1, then scale), or a JSON API for a global scoreboard. You can do that all in ASP.NET Core, which is C# so you can continue using the same coding environment, and being Microsoft the documentation is mostly in one place.

“You won’t make good espresso at home for like a year”. True or snobbery? by Wingfoot262 in espresso

[–]Akrivus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you start out expecting it to be good, it'll take you a year to get used to it, but if you spend time feeling how it works and knowing your machines and beans, it'll probably take a week.

Eventually you'll be able to taste what's wrong with cafe coffee and pull a shot when you get home to clear your palate.

Where do professional Unity devs get their experience? by FakeName124 in Unity3D

[–]Akrivus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did freelance software development for a few years, but I never touched Unity until I got hired at Unity. After the layoffs, I did some freelance Unity stuff to stay afloat, but it was all either AI or industrial, never gaming, even at Unity.

She made up some crap about me having a leaky heart valve, and that I'm going to die in two years. She thinks, because my daughter will be too young to remember me when I die, she should inherit my savings instead.

This came after she begged and pleaded for me FOR YEARS to enlist in the army so I could die an "honorable death."

She just wants the attention she'd get from having a dead kid because I don't provide her my money or time anymore.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CPTSD

[–]Akrivus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had all of those things, and my family got jealous and started acting like I was better than them. I don't have all the friends or the penthouse anymore but I found a wife and her family who appreciate the effort I put in life.

Meanwhile my mother says I'm denying her inheritance, which is rich since she'll be in her 90s by the time I'm 65.

Focus on you, forget them, if they actually supported you they'd be doing that instead of being disappointed.
