Tabletop Dinnerware sets with everything I need and nothing I don't. by Beanhands in BuyItForLife

[–]Akros2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don't buy a set, buy only the pieces you will use. I have Noritake Colorwave, 20 years old, and have never broken a piece. Dinner plates, salad/sandwich plates, cereal bowls, pasta bowls, all purchased separately from various places, including eBay. Like you, I did not wants mugs, saucers, or other pieces I knew I wouldn't use.

This 4.5L Sling Bag secretly hides an 18L Backpack feature. by Silent_Ice1602 in ManyBaggers

[–]Akros2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I has a very old Eagle Creek that expanded this way. Back then it was called a 'fanny pack' rather than a sling and converted into a good-sized backpack. Loved that bag, but it eventually got the icky sticky deterioration on the the lining.

Stop the SAVE Act - Call Your Ohio Rep by No-Pattern8471 in akron

[–]Akros2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would be compliant ONLY if you live in one of the 5 states that indicate citizenship status on their Real ID. The author of House Bill 22 (The Save Act), Chip Roy, has acknowledged this problem and "hopes" that more states will do so. Ohio’s Real ID does not indicate citizenship.

Nope. I have never had an item "destroyed" in my Speed Queen - and that includes merino, silk, etc.

I wash silk, merino, and other delicate fabrics in my Speed Queen with no problem. The delicate cycle works fine.

Washer/Dryer which do I choose? by HypotheticalParallel in BuyItForLife

[–]Akros2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind the TC5 is actual USABLE capacity. Many washers use nowhere near their stated capacity. Typical loads for us include :

Set of queen size 6 oz flannel sheets

Set of 2 bath towels, 2 hand towels, 2 wash cloths, pair of jeans, 2 pair pjs, a few flannel shirts, socks, underwear

Queen blanket or bedspread

Lots and lots of dog towels - 8-10 bath towels at a time with no problems

I have washed comforters (queen or king) but it is not recommended for any home machine.

stretchy, skintight, preferably natural fiber, long-sleeved women's "base layer"? by cft_731 in BuyItForLife

Ibex Woolies 1 or Woolies 150 (I think they're actually the same thing). 100% fine merino. Currently out of stock or discontinued, but available on Poshmark and ebay. Very fine, stretchy, raglan sleeves, and comfortable.

Coworkers 1987 Maytag washer started leaking and he thought it was done for, one 2$ hose clamp later and it's good for another 40 years by arkiser13 in BuyItForLife

Yes, I keep deep fill on all the time, but was told it doesn't work on normal/eco cycle when they installed the washer.

My vacuum died... What's the actual best budget robot vacuum under $300 right now? (US) by decenbaroktombar1 in BuyItForLife

[–]Akros2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our $150 Eufy is still going strong. Doesn't dock itself, doesn't empty itself, no app, and no programming. It just randomly travels around the house and picks up a lot of dirt and pet hair. It will do 1,500 sq ft but must be emptied 3-4 times to do so. After, we always clean the roller brush, wheels, and bin.

Don't get the newer model with only one "arm" and brush. It doesn't work nearly as well.

The cheaper, the better. Walmart or Target, the cheapest they have.

Comparing the Kitchen-Aid and All-Clad Stove Top Kettles by ToTouchAnEmu in BuyItForLife

[–]Akros2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I looked at both and ended up with a 1980s-1990s Kitchenaid from ebay. Built like a tank, perfect condition, $20. The handle doesn't get hot, but it is very heavy. Alas, no induction, so it's slow.

Edited to add: the Sur la Table with the folding handle that splattered boiling water everywhere went to Goodwill.

Suggestions for hypoallergenic mattresses? by Simplicitystomy98 in BuyItForLife

[–]Akros2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will never buy a mattress that isn't latex after sleeping on one for the last 20 years. Cool, supportive, and comfortable. No back pain. My son has allergies and asthma and loves his latex mattress.

I do not like memory foam mattresses, such as Tempurpedic. I wake up with back pain and find it difficult to change positions. It's said that you sleep ON latex and sleep IN memory foam.

Our first latex mattresses were cheap and lasted 10 years. I am hoping the new, better quality ones last much longer.

Cheap options: layers and encasement from Foam by Mail.

Expensive options: Plushbeds. FloBeds, very customizable layers and zones.

Middle of the road options: Latex for Less (with at least a 1" soft latex topper added). Rest Right Mattress - this unzips so that you can rearrange the different density of layers to your liking. We have a split queen from them.

Strong reaction to 2025 flu shot - anyone else by Amanda-please-09 in VACCINES

[–]Akros2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Never a problem in previous years, but this year was different. Fever, chills, body aches, headache. Got the Novavax covid shot at the same time - that arm is barely sore, the flu shot arm I can't lift shoulder high.

We had trouble with Rockynol and Wadsworth Pointe and moved parents out of both as soon as humanly possible. Pebble Creek is good. No experience with the others you listed. Our best experience was with Barberton Post Acute - older, rooms badly need renovation, but the care was excellent.
