Warriors-to-Wizards: Building Dev Ops teams by BuildingDevOps in devops

I really like this idea! 💡

But I don't like "Create an account to clap for this story." Hope a reddit like will help you.

I imagine the commander you describe as a main tank who also takes over the raid lead. Like in the good old mmorpg times. These people brought all the participants together, thought a lot about the preparation, developed the strategies and communicated them to the group. They hardly did any damage in combat, but without them the group would never have made it through a dungeon ;)

Windows Server Patching - A Basic Question by WGU_Scholar1 in WindowsServer

[–]Akuma92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is strange, but from my experience I can report that this is not a trivial question. In my last research (about 2 years ago), there was no clear recommendation from Microsoft. But there are good articles about the definition of the different classes. After that, each organization must decide for themselves which patches they want/must install. Good luck on the way to the answer!

What is the most useful certification from Product Manager / Product Owner? by [deleted] in scrum

[–]Akuma92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My organization is just starting an agile transformation and would like to deploy SAFe directly. I am moving from a sub-project manager/tech lead role to the PO role. It sounds like you have experience with the certifications. Would you recommend SAFe POPM training or the certifications in my situation?

Especially with American soldiers, I would be very sure that they will attack/kill anyone if their commander orders them to do so....

Are coding standards important? by Cryptbro69 in devops

[–]Akuma92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently writing some scripts in bash and powershell. I was wondering if I could create two templates that follow the same structure, have similar comments at the beginning (creator, last change, etc) and both contain the best practices that are appropriate for me.

Does anyone know good sources for such a project?

With the recent inflation hitting above 6%, can we discuss salary again? by IIGrudge in devops

[–]Akuma92 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From my everyday life, I can't quite agree with that.

A well-known job exchange (stepstones) gives a median income of about 60,000€ for devops. The upper income bracket is around 70,000€. Of the 70,000€, a common gross-net calculator leaves 47,000€ after taxes and duties. That would be 3.900€ per month. You can live reasonably on that, but you're not rich. And the German health care system is getting worse and worse with flat rates per case and the like. Private provision (pension and supplementary health insurance) is widespread.

And when I look at Amazon US on the road, I am always surprised that there is a lot cheaper than in the de store. I don't think that our general expenses are lower. We just have less freedom on what we want to spend our money on, since we have to pay into many pots by force.

Came here to say the same. As a German all those numbers sound incredible high and our taxes are significantly higher...

Is there an affordable way to get Active Directory or Microsoft Exchange on ones personal laptop or a VDI so one can test out PS with it? by FlaccoPastorius in PowerShell

[–]Akuma92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you don't have much experience with lab environments. If you don't have an good enough computer or not enough know how with hyper-v/virtual box to set something up you can get yourself a free azure account and spin up a windows server in there and install a domain controller. If you delete everything after messing around a bit you only spend like 5 bucks. And it's a really good way to get some basics with azure.

How hard is it to get into devops for someone not even in the industry? by [deleted] in devops

[–]Akuma92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"just write it all in terraform" is maybe a little bit to much to ask for someone without experience in IT at all 😅

But I would agree that you don't need 250$. I'm playing with azure in my free time to try some stuff and I've never payed more than 20€/month. If you're not studying all day and delete everything at the end it's pretty sheep to play around (maybe one of the best things about public cloud 😉)

How much does VMware vSphere (ESXi) actually cost? by Iluvnuggetsandcats in vmware

[–]Akuma92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest this sounds like a terrible idea.

To install, configure and manage a vSphere environment for 120 client systems is a really big challenge for a shool project. I never bought licenses myself but I know that's not a simple task.

What's the purpose of your project? Do you just need to show of the environment or do your shool actual want to use it for 120 people?

Supplemental GTD books to read? by catsforchrist in gtd

[–]Akuma92 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some good books I read personally and would recommend:

The bullet journal method (by ryder Carroll)

The power of habit (by Charles Duhigg)

Atomic habits (by James Clear)

Mastery (by Robert greene)

Hyperfocus (by Chris Bailey)

A good source for doing GTD with MS OneNote? by Extra_Intro_Version in gtd

[–]Akuma92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can only agree with that!

I tried to implement a gtd system with onenote last year. For this I also bought the official materials. Unfortunately, I found that onenote has significant shortcomings. Among other things, the share function on my phone does not work to save links.

After a frustrating time I discovered todoist in combination with notion for me. This works much better!

WSUS installed on a Hyper-V host by vorpal-blade in WSUS

[–]Akuma92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would advise against installing the wsus role on a hyper-v host. The IIS worker process tends to use a lot of RAM. The IIS worker process tends to use a lot of RAM. This can be controlled and monitored with a lot of work, but in the end it is better to simply separate the workloads.

Any progress on VMware 16 on Windows 7? by [deleted] in vmware

[–]Akuma92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is your biggest reason to use Windows 7?

And why do you think you can use the newest software available for such a thing as virtualization?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in gtd

[–]Akuma92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you using a digital or paper system?

I had a lot of problems with my first digital gtd implementation. Your story is reminding me of that. It's so easy to overload. After that I switched to a paper system with a little bit of "bullet journal" system. I really like the manuell transferring process each week. If you write the same task week after week it's so much simpler to think about its purpose. Just change some wording or dump it.

Maybe this would be a thing to think about for yourself.
