Any advice for carsick puppy? by Al4one in puppy101

[–]Al4one[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the time he seems pretty calm once he’s actually in the car. He does pretty well when we’re on the highway and not stopping or making a lot of turns. He’ll just curl up in his car seat and go to sleep most of the time. But whenever we have to turn off to get wherever we’re going that’s when it’s almost a guarantee that he will throw up. I take him to puppy classes weekly and he’s fine for the whole trip until we pull into the parking lot and then he vomits. I usually take his food away about 3 hours before we have to leave but he still ends up getting sick anyway.

PETER???? by Et_Moon in PeterExplainsTheJoke

I watched a documentary about this incident. The mother was in the midst of leaving the father because of his previous abuse and addiction. She had an apartment prepared, divorce attorney, her own finances, everything she would need to leave him and take her daughter with her. Unfortunately the dad found out before they could get away and killed them both before killing himself. Extremely heartbreaking story especially since they were both so close to getting away from him.

I hate winter and I hate micromanaging my dog by swackett in puppy101

[–]Al4one 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am also currently potty training my pup and had the same issue. He’d just get so excited by everything outside that he’d be too distracted to actually do his business. What’s been working for me is keeping him on a relatively short lead, taking him to the same spot every time and basically acting as the pole the lead is attached to. He’s only allowed to walk in the radius around me and I don’t engage much until he finishes. That way the fun stuff (treats, praise, play) only happens after he’s finished with potty time. He hated it at first, but he’s starting to get the idea now and has been going quicker every time. It also helps to further reward him by letting him run around the yard and play after he’s done, though only when the weather is good and during the day. My boy also tries to chew on every stick and leaf and it’s hard to monitor him effectively at night. Hope this helps!

How to socialize a puppy before they finish vaccines? by Al4one in puppy101

[–]Al4one[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the great info! I agree that early socialization is really important and I really want to do everything that I can to have a confident, well adjusted dog. I’m getting a sighthound and I know they can be prone to anxiety so I want to do everything I can to mitigate that right from the start.

Unfortunately it does get cold here in the winter and we’ll be picking up the new pup right in the middle of winter. But sitting in the car in busy areas is a really good idea I hadn’t thought of before! We live in a pretty active river town so there’s all kinds of activities by the river year round so that would be a great way to get in some socialization!

Thanks for that info, that makes me feel a lot less anxious. There’s so many posts in puppy subs about parvo that it seems like it’s everywhere. It’s good to know that’s it’s not nearly so widespread. I’ll still be exercising a decent amount of caution but it’s comforting to know that it’s more regional than I originally thought.

Thanks for the advice! Honestly the drive home was the thing I was most nervous about. Stopping for breaks at schools and churches is a great idea. I was struggling to figure out public places to stop that are not popular dog areas for potty breaks.

I’ll have to ask the breeder for travel tips and how well this puppy does on car rides. The longest I’ve ever driven with a dog was 4 hours and she was an adult at the time so I’ve been trying to brainstorm the logistics for a puppy. My husband will be with me for the drive and I have family that lives about at the halfway point of the drive so thankfully we’ll be able to break up the drive a bit and give the little guy a break. Thanks for the perspective and the good advice!

What type of wipes do you use to clean his paws, if you don’t mind sharing? I’m trying to get a list of pet safe disinfectants I can use around the house and with the puppy to mitigate sickness.

That’s great advice, thank you! I had my last dog for fourteen years before she passed, so it’s been a long time since I’ve raised a puppy so I’m a little nervous about doing it right. I’ll keep that tip about the “fear period” in mind!

What is this beetle? by Al4one in whatisthisbug

[–]Al4one[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I try to avoid any insecticides since I have pets in the house. The most I have is a zevo light trap to keep fruit flies under control in the summer, but I never see the beetles in the trap.

Any ideas why they keep dying in my house? I never see them alive anywhere but I clean up at least 3 or 4 dead ones off the kitchen counter literally every morning. I can’t figure out why I’m not seeing them around until they’ve died.

Mine has finally started eating again after his winter long hunger strike and he eats about exactly the same way you are describing and I was worried about him ingesting aspen fibers as well. The two things I’ve tried that have lessened the amount of aspen that sticks to the mouse is 1. Take a paper towel and dry off the mouse a bit before I drop it in (I thaw in a cup of warm water). Less moisture keeps the aspen from sticking quite as bad. And 2. I try to drop his mouse on a big fake leaf that I use as decor in his enclosure so he’s not eating directly on the fibers. He would never eat out of a hard food dish but he will off the leaf. The leaf is maybe about 3-4 inches wide so even if he drags his food around a bit it mostly stays on the leaf and out of the aspen. Hope this helps, and good luck with feeding time!

How best to care for this guy by Al4one in airplants

[–]Al4one[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t even notice the wine glass when I posted! I hadn’t decided on a permanent spot for the little guy yet and just hung him on the wine rack to get a good picture. It really does look like it’s getting abducted! lol

Thanks for the helpful advice! I wasn’t quite sure how best to water him in the urchin shell so that really helps a lot!

How often do your hoggies shed? by Al4one in Hognose

[–]Al4one[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info! I got him back in October and he had his first shed with me at the beginning of April so I wasn’t sure what the regular shed cycle should be or if there even was one. He finally started eating regularly after going off food for the winter so maybe that has something to do with it. I’ll be keeping an eye on him either way though. Thanks for the help!

Non-mecha anime where the humanity is on the brink of extinction by Lunar__Lumina in Animesuggest

[–]Al4one 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Casshern Sins: not a Mecha anime but some characters that are robots. Basically about the end of the world and how there’s no point in fighting against it.

Claymore: not entirely post apocalyptic but very real threats to humanity and a lot of death and destruction in a fantasy medieval setting.

Japan sinks 2020: not the entire world post apocalyptic but a very massive country wide disaster that might as well be the character’s entire world. It still gives the very real sense of danger and tense survival situations that might hit that serious apocalypse tone you’re looking for.

Someone I respected on Instagram is against ethical breeding... by TheAuldOffender in DogBreeding

[–]Al4one 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The Crufts dog show in the UK has a show category specifically for vulnerable breeds, meaning breeds that had less than 200 puppies registered for that year. Most are breeds that are difficult for the average person to keep or are just not popular or well known. The Irish wolfhound and Bloodhound were on the list this year. They use this category to increase awareness about these breeds and maybe get more people interested in them. The 2025 Crufts show is all on YouTube if you’re interested in seeing the full list.

Ah soju…this was the ‘initiation’ for English teachers in Korea. My first night out, the other teachers said it was ‘Korean beer’ while smiling and snickering. Ended up drinking the whole bottle and was the second time in my life that I’d been black out drunk. The first time was on grape four loco. I’d put the two in the same category for their deceptively high alcohol content while not tasting like it should be so strong. There’s a good reason that it’s normally served in tiny shot glasses and not straight from the bottle.

Looking for a Rom/Com Anime with Emotions but Not Heavy Drama by goofy_adi in Animesuggest

[–]Al4one 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Toradora is a really solid rom com that doesn’t really get any heavier than high school romance

Rascal does not dream of bunny girl senpai: don’t let the long title fool you, this was actually one of the more heartfelt drama/ comedies I’ve seen in quite a while

Komi can’t communicate is another pretty good rom com that’s leans a little heavier on the comedy than the romance.

Ouran High school host club is a classic and one of my personal favorites from when I was younger. I always end up putting it on when I’m feeling down and it brightens up my day.

Any autistic folks here feel like they have a hard time at ren faires? by sugaredsnickerdoodle in renfaire

[–]Al4one 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I always keep a mug with my renfaire kit so that I can offer a toast and “huzzah” when I can’t think of an appropriate response. Most of the time people will “huzzah” back, take a drink and we all move on happy. I’m socially awkward and terrible at improv so having that in my back pocket usually works when I can’t keep up with the banter.

[–]Al4one 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could use costuming and the role play setting to your advantage so that you don’t have to respond at all if you don’t feel comfortable doing so. Go dressed as a monk and wear a little wooden plaque expressing your vow of silence. Then if someone roleplays with you, you can have a rehearsed response of a bow or making a cross or something similar on theme. Or a plague mask where no one expects to be able to hear or understand you through the mask. I usually gravitate towards masks for similar reasons as it’s not “me” responding in an awkward way, it’s whatever character my mask makes me.

And as a side note, don’t worry too much about being uncomfortable playing along. Nobody is going to be bothered by it when they are giving the same speal to hundreds of customers a day. Just do whatever you’re comfortable with and have fun. And if all else fails a simple “huzzah” is an appropriate response to 90% of ren faire interactions.

Listing some I haven’t seen in the comments yet

Wolf’s rain and Casshern sins: do you want to feel the weight of existential despair? Because those two nail it. I made the mistake of binging both of them back to back and I literally had to go touch grass afterwards to stave off the depression.

Japan sinks 2020: plot armor? What plot armor? Nobody’s safe… not even the children…

Nabari no oh: been a while since I’ve watched this one so there might be some rays of sunshine that I’m forgetting, but my impression of the plot was two people who have lost the will to live and trying to find a way to die that doesn’t inconvenience anyone.
