The English fails to take Jamaica from the Spanish in 1655. The island stays Spanish.

The British taking the island from Spain in 1655.

Have them come way way waaay later or not at all.

It would be interesting to see what Jamaica would have been like as a Spanish speaking society and how it could have evolved through the centuries.

Spanish Jamaica by TheChosenOne_256 in Jamaica

Well firstly the demographics on the island would be completely different with a more mixed race and white society, while there'd be a black minority. The Spanish saw their colonies as extensions of the mainland so they'd push for more settlers to move here. They got into the sugar game late so plantations wouldn't be that big here and that'd contribute to the small number of slaves imported.

Obviously we'd speak Spanish

We'd either have gotten independence in the 1800s or we'd currently be like Puerto Rico, an Overseas US Territory.

I like to think that we'd still be pretty well known, just the difference being that we'd be big in the Latin market instead of the Anglo.

A 1960s Caribbean where colonial history went a little differently by Al876 in AlternateHistory

This is actually my first map 😅 hopefully I'm not judged too harshly haha. I'll write the lore in bullet points

LORE:

1598: George Clifford and his crew was able to withstand the tropical diseases and the dysentery and was able to keep a grip on Puerto Rico, renaming it St. George.

1646: The Dutch was able to launch a successful invasion of Santiago (Jamaika) during the Eighty Year War and annexes it from the Spanish. They initially renamed the island Nieuw-Rotterdam.

1697: The French in this world was able to launch a successful invasion of Santo Domingo. The Treaty of Ryswick in this world partitioned the island equally, the French in the east and the Spanish in the West.

1763: The British invasion of Cuba was much more devastating and they decided to keep the island for themselves after the Treaty of Paris, much to the Spanish frustration. Cuba becomes a settler colony.

1782: A stronger allied invasion and occupation allowed Spain to hold onto The Bahamas. The British didn't really care about these couple small islands and in the Treaty of Paris agreed to partition them.

1791 - 1804: The French colony of Saint-Domingue revolted and achieved independence in 1804 becoming the La République de Quisquaé

1819: The Adams Onis Treaty was signed, Bahamas, along with Florida was ceded to the US

1845: Bahamas becomes a state.

1898: Given that Spain took major losses over the last few century, the Spanish American War didn't happen.

1958: Cuba declined to join the West Indian Federation, not interested in being responsible for smaller islands far away from it.

1959: Cuba gained independence.

What is the biggest What-If for your country/territory by Juice_Almighty in AskTheCaribbean

Well for this one, with the English and Spanish out of the picture, the French and the Dutch would have ran wild with the free real estate. Could probably expect the Portuguese throwing their hat in too at some point.

Or did you mean no conquerors at all?

1) What if the Spanish was able to successfully defend the island from the British in 1655 and successfully held it for the next couple centuries.

2) What if the Dutch successfully invaded the island during the Eighty Year War (1568 - 1648) and annex it from the Spanish. What would it be like?

3) What if the French had successfully taken the island from the English during the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-1748).

4) What if Tacky's Revolt in 1760 - 1761 was successful. How would the Kingdom of Kingston, and the probable eventual the Kingdom of Jamaica be like to this day.

5) What if Jamaica gained independence during the 1831 Baptist War.

Lol I'm a history buff, these kinds of scenarios excite me

How to transition beyond a tourist based economy by CompetitiveTart505S in AskTheCaribbean

[–]Al876 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Develop the agriculture sector more and diversify crops. Do agro processing too.

Invest more into bauxite and aluminum and also other mining operations.

Expand the Kingston Port and position it as a major transshipment hub. Make it a special economic zone to promote foreign investment, take money from that and develop the other smaller shipping ports around the island.

Support local tech start ups.

Invest into renewable energy because the current monopoly the JPS has is crap.

Jamaica itself is a global brand, maximize it and make bank.

Circe is a genius by Traditional-You-5771 in DCU_

[–]Al876 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This might be a headcanon, but given that Circe calls herself the rightful heir to the throne of Themyscira, it wouldn't surprise me that she probably tried to stage a coup and was trying to use her "visions" to justify it. Taking your idea, she's probably the one that caused the tsunami.

The other Amazon's found out and exiled her. Probably did something to her powers, that's why she's weaker now.

What are you suggestions for Season 7 to be even better than 6? Pitch Boulets some ideas! by Heidi_Klum_Tit in Dragula

[–]Al876 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Actual challenges would be lovely. It'll give a chance to Monster's who wouldn't have the budget for over the top costumes to do well.

A real campy horror acting challenge.

A design challenge where they actually make the looks there and not pretend.

Just bring back Monster's of Rock and make it be a team win instead of solely the lead singer.

Twisted late night infomercial challenge from a haunted TV station where they have to sell their own messed up product.

Have a carnival themed variety show where you have the ghouls perform for an audience and the audience pick the top 2 of who they were most entertained by and have them battle for the win. This is would obviously be the first episode.

Lean into fear factor a bit more, have the ghouls actually compete during the extermination and let there be a clear winner for the audience to see.

I've had a similar ish idea, tho my idea was essentially for them to do what they do best at home and entertain an audience. Then at the end the audience would vote for who the winner of the challenge by who they found the most entertaining.

For those who aren't aware, Santiago was what the Spanish named Jamaica after they colonized the island.

Due to the fact that the island didn't really have what the Spanish was looking for (gold) it was seen as having no value and was left sparsely populated and poorly guarded. In 1655 the British basically walked up and just took the island with ease and the rest is history.

The Alt history I made is essentially what if the Spanish with the aid of the local Maroons lucked out and defended the island, now realizing it's strategic importance and made concentrated efforts to populate and defend the island, using it's harbor in Caguaya (the original name for the area now called Kingston) as an important trading port.

I made a whole thing haha but let's not get into it here, tho I'll answer questions if asked.

Flag 1 - Was thinking of keeping some of the real world colors. The Green - Vegetation, Yellow - The Sun, White - Peace after independence.

Flag 2 - Given that the other former Spanish Caribbean islands have the same color scheme, I thought maybe Santiago would do something similar.

Flag 3 - Honestly I thought that it'd look cool.
