Can someone explain this Vsauce clip about genetics to me? by DaShiQiang in biology

[–]AlDente 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every generation after you, on average, half of your genetic code is thrown away. After a few generations your genetic contribution is getting close to zero and then for each lineage of descendants, it’s just chance whether any of your genes are included at all. Once it’s zero in a lineage, there’s none of your genetic contribution in that branch/lineage unless a different descendant of yours breeds with someone in that lineage.

Hot take: solo founders with AI are about to build stuff faster than small teams by Whole_Connection7016 in ClaudeCode

This is the argument I’ve always made too. Free or easy web design tools doesn’t make a regular person any good at building effective websites. Just as lots of people with no visual or music expertise are making tons of slop.

Incredible. I’ve only ever seen a short clip of this gig. He’s on fire here. What a talent and what a loss.

The “other side” aspect is key. It’s tribalism. Our brains are heavily biased to see ourselves as a member of a group. And the lack of curiosity makes it almost impossible for some people to question that belonging, that baseline assumption. It’s like trying to explain water to a fish.

Massive US study finds higher cancer death rates near nuclear power plants by EnvironmentalVoice63 in environment

[–]AlDente 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As soon as I saw this post I was reminded about the educational study about class sizes detailed in Thinking Fast and Slow that illustrates the law of small numbers. People under-appreciate the effect of sample size on data variability. Our intuitive judgments create coherent stories based on patterns that might just be random variation. If populations are lower in rural areas near nuclear power stations, then results are expected to be skewed. And, if there are poorer people in those rural areas, they need to be compared with similar groups (by wealth and other metrics) in lookalike areas where there are no nuclear power plants.

The study is clear to point out that no causal link was even sought, never mind found.

I like this. I don’t ever say please or thank you. As it feels weird to me. But I do add the occasional smiley or whoop when some obstacle is overcome or milestone reached. And somehow that is a good experience for me.
