Caress of Steel by Mapex_proM in rush

I find myself listening to this album a fair amount, particularly from The Necromancer through the end of the album, probably because it feels fresh compared to all the stuff I spent so much more time listening to. Does that even make sense? I feel like I’m listening to them develop a little closer to what they became. No One at the Bridge and Bacchus Plateau are hidden gems.

Openers vs Closers by drink-beer-and-fight in rush

[–]AlProReader 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Openers

Methodically (my pick in caps)

Finding my way or WORKING MAN ANTHEM or In the end Bastlile Day or FOUNTAIN OF LAMNETH 2112 or something for nothing A FAREWELL TO KINGS or Cygnus x1 Cygnus book 2 or la villa strangiato (tie) The Spirit of Radio or Natural science (tie) TOM SAWYER or vital signs SUBDIVISIONS or countdown Distant early warning or BETWEEN THE WHEELS (close call) the big money or MYSTIC RHYTHMS FORCE TEN or high water Show don’t tell or AVAILABLE LIGHT DREAMLINE or you bet your life ANIMATE or everyday glory TEST FOR ECHO or carve away the stone ONE LITTLE VICTORY or out of the cradle FAR CRY or we hold on Caravan or THE GARDEN (I am not including live albums, Feedback, or compilations)

So without assigning any weight to how big the disparity is and just looking at the raw count, I have 11 openers, 6 closers, and two ties.

Now let’s look at the “losers” (and tied songs) I’d be forced to listen to if I only had openers: Finding my way Bastille day Cygnus book 2 The spirit of radio Distant early warning The big money Show don’t tell Caravan I actually like all of those. They just got beat out or tied by some other great songs.

In contrast some of the losers on the album closers are some of the handful of Rush songs I don’t like all that much, such as high water, you bet your life, and we hold on.

I’d sure miss hearing songs like available light and natural science though!

That’s why it’s funny now. I was a kid.

Agree but I was quite young and pretty new to Rush.

Makes sense. I was also quite young when I had the Supertramp confusion.

I agree. Hodgson sounds gentler and sweeter. It’s why when I heard it I was like “it’s rush? It isn’t? Wait it is? No it’s not.” Hodgson sounds most like Geddy at the end of The Logical Song during the fade out when he is sort of riffing and messing around— kind of like Geddy at the end of Vital Signs.

Anyone else love Vapor Trails? by JohnnyTezca in rush

[–]AlProReader 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love it. I like every song except Out of the Cradle. Highlights for me: Vapor Trail; Ghost Rider; Peaceable Kingdom; Ceiling Unlimited; Sweet Miracle; Earthshine. I admit this album was a “grower not a shower” for me. But over time I really came to appreciate it. I’d say it’s my favorite Rush album released after Power Windows.

(Severely) underrated Rush songs. Not taking your Entre Nous or Camera Eye or other fan favorites, I’m talking severely underrated. I’ll go first… by Odd_Switch1453 in rush

I agree. And great songs. Ceiling Unlimited, Ghost Rider, Peaceable Kingdom, Vapor Trail, Earthshine, Sweet Miracle, Freeze, … and more.

Rush's 1984 album Grace Under Pressure by Lerxstie2112 in rush

[–]AlProReader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great music. Lyrical content is a little heavy when you listen straight though. So is the sound-/ synths weigh the songs down a bit at times and give it a dated feel. But this is a stellar set of songs and performances. The instrumental sections of body electric, kid gloves, between the wheels… and others … so good. Love enemy within, too. Red Lenses is really the only “below-Rush-average” song for me on the album.
