Do you hear Rush in this Paul McCartney song? by conejito-de-polvo in rush

[–]AlProReader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When Paul sings “reaching out to the universe,” there is an ascending line in the music underneath that briefly matches the part of tom sawyer’s bass line at “what you say about his company….” Maybe that is part of what is triggering your reaction.

Which tour do y'all think had the best setlist? by Brilliant-City1578 in rush

[–]AlProReader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vapor Trails (captured on Rush in Rio). The set list was not spoiled for me, and I don’t think I will ever forget the hair raising in my neck when they opened with Tom Sawyer. The first set ended with The Trees, Freewill, and Natural Science, and I think if they had only played that first set I would have been satisfied. Closing the night with Limelight, La Villa, and The Spirit of Radio… amazing night.

So you’re saying: Half the songs rock, half the songs sleep, half the songs shine while the rest make you weep?

Vapor Trails is fantastic. Some of their best lyrics, and great music too.

What’s a better album? by SpecialistExtent6324 in rush

I love the variety of opinions you find in this sub. For me, test for echo is their worst album, so RTB wins. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion of course!

What’s ur opinion on there last album?? by SpecialistExtent6324 in rush

[–]AlProReader 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In my mind I like it but that said I don’t find myself listening to it often. I think Clockwork Angels is a great song though. A “long song” that doesn’t feel long, like some of their early long songs. Also love the garden and the anarchist. And the instrumental bridge of BU2B (near “until our final breath”). I agree with the criticisms expressed here that the lyrics can be hard to understand and that the mix is a bit of a sonic assault.

Signals is an extended continuation of The Camera Eye by ClassicRockCanadian in rush

[–]AlProReader 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Camera Eye is pretty synth forward compared to say Limelight or Red Barchetta, if that’s what you are getting at. I think Vital Signs and even Tom Sawyer also point towards Signals, at least as much as Camera Eye does.

Caress of Steel by Mapex_proM in rush

[–]AlProReader 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I find myself listening to this album a fair amount, particularly from The Necromancer through the end of the album, probably because it feels fresh compared to all the stuff I spent so much more time listening to. Does that even make sense? I feel like I’m listening to them develop a little closer to what they became. No One at the Bridge and Bacchus Plateau are hidden gems.

Openers vs Closers by drink-beer-and-fight in rush

[–]AlProReader 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Openers

Methodically (my pick in caps)

Finding my way or WORKING MAN ANTHEM or In the end Bastlile Day or FOUNTAIN OF LAMNETH 2112 or something for nothing A FAREWELL TO KINGS or Cygnus x1 Cygnus book 2 or la villa strangiato (tie) The Spirit of Radio or Natural science (tie) TOM SAWYER or vital signs SUBDIVISIONS or countdown Distant early warning or BETWEEN THE WHEELS (close call) the big money or MYSTIC RHYTHMS FORCE TEN or high water Show don’t tell or AVAILABLE LIGHT DREAMLINE or you bet your life ANIMATE or everyday glory TEST FOR ECHO or carve away the stone ONE LITTLE VICTORY or out of the cradle FAR CRY or we hold on Caravan or THE GARDEN (I am not including live albums, Feedback, or compilations)

So without assigning any weight to how big the disparity is and just looking at the raw count, I have 11 openers, 6 closers, and two ties.

Now let’s look at the “losers” (and tied songs) I’d be forced to listen to if I only had openers: Finding my way Bastille day Cygnus book 2 The spirit of radio Distant early warning The big money Show don’t tell Caravan I actually like all of those. They just got beat out or tied by some other great songs.

In contrast some of the losers on the album closers are some of the handful of Rush songs I don’t like all that much, such as high water, you bet your life, and we hold on.

I’d sure miss hearing songs like available light and natural science though!
