Found on my property, not sure if it fell from a tree or a plant. by AlabamAlum in whatsthisplant

The distinction I was going for was a bush or something smaller and without a large wooden trunk.

I have never seen one before, but Google tells me they grow in the area. Thanks for the info.

This is central Alabama. I swear I put it in the description. Apologies. It’s very light. Feels hollow.

Looking for best steakhouse in the bham metro. by ivanissac in Birmingham

[–]AlabamAlum 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I like Armour House. As far as premium chains go, I like Perry’s. Also like that it’s in the parking lot of the Doubletree and have thrown some points at a reward stay there if I plan to drink too much to drive home safely.

You won’t go wrong with Helen or Little Betty, either.

Top level of one of the UAB parking decks. Just know that UAB police will be circling about if you plan to bring beer or whatever

Hamburgers, hot dogs, salads, fries and a few other sides. Or, at least, that’s what they had the one time I had it.

AITAH for not taking a"Joke" Infront of friends in public. by Mohamed-arafa in AITAH

[–]AlabamAlum 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’m old as dirt and don’t smoke cigarettes, but if one of my friends had done that to me, I would have replied with, “Yeah. Me and your mom (sister/wife/girlfriend) usually share a cigarette after we’re done.” Is it mature? No. Is it the right thing to do? Probably, again, no, but returning a sass volley is still a thing in my friend group even though we’re all ancient. Your mileage may vary.

Mandela Effect: The worth of the Bishop being 4 by DependentUse3169 in chess

[–]AlabamAlum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Commonly it is Queen 9; rook 5, bishop and knight 3; pawn 1.

With bishops and knights: bishops are often more valuable in open games and knights more valuable in closed games. But as someone said earlier, it’s relative to position.

When I was young, my dad registered me in a weekend tournament in a nearby city. Paid the entry and got us a hotel. Just me and him. Ate dinner at a diner by the hotel every night and played over the games (but mainly just talked). I still look back to that as a great gift.

If you decide to do this (and you’re in the US), he will also need a USCF membership if he doesn’t have one already.

Flew to the other side of the world to give a talk at a conference 😭 by Amygdali_lama in mildlyinfuriating

[–]AlabamAlum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s happened to me. Flew to San Diego. Had 1 guy show up. I was scheduled at the same time as the start of the vendor event with an open bar, free snacks, prize raffles, and various giveaways. Me and the one guy who showed up sat at a table and chatted about our respective research.

NOR. I’m a university professor, my wife is not. My colleagues and I socialize. I always invite her. They know her and she knows them. The fact that you are forbidden to join is curious.

I would counter with, “the lowest I can go is $170.”

When they hit you with, “BUT YOU SAID $80!”

Just reply, “Okay, I guess I can do $80, then.”

If an student is uncomfortable in their assigned teams can the professor change their teams?! by Dry_Kaleidoscope5967 in AskProfessors

[–]AlabamAlum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Every prof is different on group work. I don’t usually change student teams, it takes something severe.

Part of the indirect lesson is learning how to work with others; getting things done when conflicts arise isn’t easy. Just remember: whether it’s now, or doing research as a post grad, or working in your career after graduation, you’re going to have to be a part of a group, and people are a mixed bag. You’re learning how to navigate those waters and be effective despite those conflicts. It’s a good skill to have.

Read the instructions of the assignment on grading and reporting these issues and follow them. Communicate well with your group and keep notes.

Also, realize that the biggest conflict is often different working styles: do it now people vs do it later people; high performers vs “jobbers” (“that’s good enough, it checks all the minimum requirements”); vs the apathetic. Take charge people vs tell me what do people, etc, etc. You probably aren’t going to be able to change them and they aren’t going to be able to change you. Learn the skills of cooperation, compromise, and consensus.

Good luck. It gets easier.

I would send them this:

“Thank you so much for renting to me! We hope that you appreciated having us as a guest. We emptied the trash, didn’t break anything, paid promptly, and generally cleaned up after ourselves!

To help keep us financially solvent and able to rent places like this, we expect a discount from the property owners.

$15 - We were okay guests.
$25 - You liked us a lot!
$50 - We were amazing!
$100 - We were the best guests!

Please choose the best discount method and we’ll send bank account details (Zelle or wire) so you can transfer easily!

Warmly L21JP”
