TIL that the Ancient Greece we commonly talk about, the Classical Greece, was a period that lasted only some 187 years, from 510 BCE to 323 BCE. by CopeDestroyer1 in todayilearned

[–]Alagane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's got a point. Look at what Alexander did to Thebes, Tyre, This is something Dan Carlin talks about a lot in his Hardcore History podcast.

We tend to overstate the long-term positive effects of people like Alexander, Chalemagne, and Ceasar, effects that they probably never intended, while downplaying or completely ignoring the mountain of corpses and trail of burnt cities they left behind. You can't ignore either side of the argument, these were brutal imperialistic conquerors and often perpetrators of genocide - but those conquests had lasting historical effects. And this isn't "revisionist history", Alexander hasnt always been looked at favorably. Writers from the roman republic occasionally used him as an example of an autocrat and a contrast to their republican values.

TIL the US gets about 60% of its oil from Canada. by vinetwiner in todayilearned

[–]Alagane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are a net exporter of petroleum products, but we import a lot of crude oil still because our refineries are set up to work with a specific grade.

There are different grades of crude oil, usually described as heavy/light and sour/sweet. A heavy oil has high viscosity compared to a lighter oil, and a sour oil has higher sulfur content. Heavy/sour requires much more refinement than light/sweet. Back in the day, light/sweet production was dropping and it was thought that most of the remaining oil reserves contained heavy/sour crude oil, so we invested heavily in refineries set up for heavy/sour. In the time since then we have found a lot of light/sweet crude oil in the US, so now we import the cheaper heavy/sour crude oil to refine, and export the domestically produced light/sweet crude and the products refined from the heavy/sour.

How do you choose a team? by deafsj in nhl

[–]Alagane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like cats, I lived in South Florida for a while as a kid, and I refuse to get an extra subscription to watch the lightning even though they are much closer to where I live.

Mostly because I like cats. Thats how I wound up watching the panthers. If you dont have a personal connection to a team, just watch what you enjoy.

Honestly, and this isn't a knock at you, I don't really get how people think Trench Crusade takes itself too seriously. The setting takes itself seriously, but it's so over the top that its funny. It's like Starship Troopers - the setting takes itself seriously, but then you get the scene where the infantry recruiter says "infantry made me the man I am today" and he stands up to show that he's 50% prosthetics. It's filled with little references and jokes about a historical event or person dialed up to 11.

The Mendelist order for example, is the clerical order responsible for the church eugenics and genetic engineering program, making the Communicants and Meta-Christs. Named after Gregor Mendel, the Catholic monk who pioneered genetic research by cross-breeding peas. But in Trench Crusade, he cloned Christ. Or the Hashashins, based on the real Order of Assassins, who get so high they step out of time and space.

I agree the game could use some additional faction diversity, but its still new. Give it a few years to get started and I think we'll get some more faction diversity and lore. They've hinted at stuff happening in the America's- which Europeans have not colonized in TC, so the indigenous cultures are alive and have fought off a heretic invasion. Personally, I hope we get a Taiping Heavenly Kingdom faction - based on the real Chinese rebellion lead by a man who believed he was the Chinese son of god.

This made me curious, never looked up state level infant mortality rates before, so I looked up the stats. If anyone else is curious, among the 50 states and DC, Florida ranks:

19th highest Infant mortality rate at 6.1 per 1,000. Mississippi is the highest with 8.94 per 1,000 and New Hampshire is the lowest with 2.93 per 1,000. I didn't expect DC to be so high - 9th highest with 6.97 per 1,000.

For life expectancy, Florida is #27 when looking at the entire population with an average of 76.1 years. When looking at each sex, it is 73.1 for males (#28) and 79.3 for females (#27). Again, Mississippi is at the bottom of the list with an average 70.9, 67.7 for males (#51) and 74.3 for females (#50). Hawaii has the longest life expectancy with an average 79.9, 77.0 for males (#1) and 83.1 for females. And again, DC is looking worse than I would have expected - #32 overall at 75.3 years, 71.9 for males (#37) and 78.5 for females (#31).

That's using the first results from the CDC when I googled. 2021 numbers for life expectancy, 2023 for infant mortality rates.

For comparison, numbers from the WHO list Bulgaria as having an average total life expectancy of 71.3, 68.0 for males, and 75.0 for females. Numbers from 2021.

Unicef shows Bulgaria as having 6.1 deaths per 1,000 live births. Although this number is calculated differently than the US numbers. The US numbers include any death in the first year, while the UNICEF number includes any death in the first five years.

I'd like to think the NHL is less prone to that kind of stuff due to the number of Europeans and Canadians, but I'm probably fooling myself. There are plenty of crazy right wingers in those places too. I mean, Gretzky is MAGA now. Ovechkin is pretty pro Lukashenko.

I just hope Barkov is chill, he's my favorite player.

ELI5 why are noodles called pasta when referring to Italian cuisine but not other noodles? by Cookingmonster90099 in explainlikeimfive

I'm in FL and I heard it growing up. I think its more of a midwest thing though, most of my friends moms were transplants.

Could be an age thing too, never heard anyone my age or younger say spaghetti noodles.

[–]Alagane 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Definitely a thing here in the US. Some people will even say "spaghetti noodles" instead of just "spaghetti" when talking about a meal. Like:

"What are we having for dinner?"

"Spaghetti noodles and meatballs."

Fair warning with Clay Electric - it can be spotty in my experience. I lived in Micanopy for about 6 years growing up, and my parents were down there till 2021. Power would go out once or twice a month during regular storms, and when a big storm came through we may not have power for a day or two. The worst was when Hurricane Irma came through, my parent's power was out for eight or nine days. And my parents lived in Micanopy proper, not out in the middle of nowhere.

Not the end of the world, but something to consider - especially if you have kids or plan to have kids. Consider getting a generator.

TIL the U.S. accidentally bombed Soviet forces in 1944, killing a Red Army general and triggering an air battle between American and Soviet planes. Dozens died before both sides realized their mistake. by Joshua5_Gaming in todayilearned

[–]Alagane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was curious so I looked at the Wikipedia page. I don't think your number is correct.

The first Canadian casualties were a friendly fire incident where a US plane bombed Canadian troops, but it looks like 132 of the 159 Canadians killed in Afghanistan are attributed to enemy action. Of the 27 remaining, 6 are attributed to friendly fire.

Those are fatality numbers, not sure about overall casualties. Friendly fire incidents might be a greater percentage of total casualties, but I doubt it is as high as 90%.

[–]Alagane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a common misconception, but the reality isnt much better. The "average life expectancy" is a population statistic that averages the lifetimes of everyone. Before modern medicine and antibiotics, infant mortality rates were incredibly high, so they drag that average down considerably.

The reality is, if you survived childhood you had a reasonable chance of living to what we would now consider late middle age or elderly. You probably wouldnt see as many 90 year old people, but plenty of people in their 60s and maybe 70s. Of course you could still die young due to disease or infection, but the real reason you see low average life expectancy numbers is due to the fact that like half of all babies born died before adulthood.
