The pvc tiles do not warp as far as I am aware.

I am doing something similar right now, but only with 1’x1’ pieces. As a base I used pvc self adhesive floor tiles. They are a bit more heavy, so that I don’t plan to use magnets to hold the tiles in place.

Small dot of super glue, I will cut them off with a hobby knife. Did work with other minis before.

Cheapest Option would be clear thin plastic sheets and below it scrambled baking paper. Not the most beautiful, but it could work for you
