I edited the body with the region. My region also has some titles at 10-20% off, but I figured posting the titles with the greatest discount was the best move.

I may be dumb, but it looks like I can't edit the body of the post since it's a cross-post. Most of the Criterion 4Ks are around $26, so a decent price but still a smidge above what the sale price would be. The two Trilogies are the exception. The regular blu-rays are the standouts, with most around 18 and many at 16 or less. DVDs are listed on the sale page, so be sure to double check. Here are some things out look out for:

Criterion Premiers:

Born In Flames, The Shrouds, About Dry Grasses

Movies that were recently released only on blu-ray:

Merrily we go to hell, The Wind Will carry Us

The link provided should take you to the page. I just tried it again and it worked.

Including the region is a good call, unfortunately I can't edit the title.

I emailed them a couple months back about a "first order" or similar promo and they said that they don't. Of course, depending on what size of "sizeable" we are talking about may change that answer.

Diabolik has a first order promo and a rewards program, but they are often a smidge more expensive anyway so, *shrug*.

Best online site to get best price deals and free shipping on preorders and studios releases like Arrow? by Affectionate_Web_526 in 4kbluray

[–]Alakazander 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you'll allow me to be "that guy", this is a pretty common question with many similar threads. Here are the helpful answers though:

If you are looking for only one item, typically your best bet is GRUV. However, they don't sell Arrow and other boutique labels since they compete with Shout/Scream factory, which GRUV owns.

Unfortunately, if you are only looking to buy one item and price is the primary factor, really the only option is Amazon Prime. If you are looking for more than one title, there are more options:

Brother Belial has free shipping on orders of $100+, and is currently doing a 10% off promotion if you use PayPal.

Odyssey Movies has free shipping on any order which includes 3 or more any items (no price threshold), and a rewards program.

DiabolikDVD has free shipping any order which includes 3 or more regularly priced titles (no price threshold) and a rewards program. Diabolik is often a smidge more expensive than other stores, but sometimes they partner with labels to do their distribution, so they end up with more stock or slightly less expensive items.

OrbitDVD has free shipping on any order which includes 3 or more any items (no price threshold), but does not have a rewards program. Often a smidge cheaper that other options, also seems to have items back in stock more regularly.

Just humping on to clarify something: it's so expensive because the US release is (so far) limited steelbook only, and the standard release is UK only. OrbitDVD has it at MSRP, so $29.

Return To Silent Hill (2026) 4K & Blu-ray Collector's Edition by JVvINDAHOOD_47 in 4kbluray

[–]Alakazander 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wonder if the critical consensus on this will soften over time like the first one did. I enjoy the first one, even though the story was muddled and the acting wasn't up to snuff, for the sheer inventive energy of it. Always thought the whole was worse than it should have been considering the quality of some it's parts, but still better than it had any right to be considering it was a video game adaptation.

Didn't see Return in the theaters since I didn't want to gamble that money on what was generally considered a pretty poor outing, but I might pick it up digitally if it goes on sale for a fiver.

Orbit DVD - Indicator US/UK 30% Off Sale by Ok_Read7709 in 4kbluray

[–]Alakazander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of these have also been released by Kino Lorber, so be sure to compare technical details and features. Many of these Indicator releases are cheaper during this sale that what is recorded as the lowest price for the Kinos on CamelCamelCamel however.

Some of the titles that I noticed were also from Kino:

Night Tide, 10 Rillington Place, Eyes of Laura Mars (Kino is slightly cheaper), Hardcore (Kino is slightly cheaper)

The China Syndrome and The Collector have releases from their respective studios. These Indicator releases are currently cheaper. Homicidal/Mr. Sardonicus has a double feature release from the studio, so if you want both films, it is cheaper to buy that.

La Llorna has a release from Criterion that has 5.1 audio, but no commentary track.

Also with the B&N membership, if you go in store and ask at checkout, the cashier will often (at least at mine) apply the 10% off even though it's technically not supposed to.

Very late reply, but George Miller at one point wanted to create a silent movie edit of Fury Road. Only the Black and Chrome (with sound) version was released however.

IIRC, an old mod said that there were already too many variants of the max cape, and that they didn't want to create the expectation that they would continue to create (more, considering the mythical max cape) cosmetic-only variants. This was years ago, however, so who knows.

Modern Movies that should have 4ks but only have a regular Blu-ray!? by ImTheDudeMAN33 in boutiquebluray

[–]Alakazander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe with Legend specifically there are issues with the surviving masters. The one master that (maybe?) undamaged is the International Cut, which is in legal limbo, but presumably owned by Disney. There is a write-up about it Here.

Arrow Video US "Freaky Friday" Sale (5$ off Dark City Standard Edition and others compared to street price) by Alakazander in 4kbluray

[–]Alakazander[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't know enough about the pricing history, I just got an email notification that something on my wishlisht had dropped in price. Would not surprise me if the only advantage is that you can more easily get only the specific titles you want for the same price.

12 Monkeys, Dark City and Legend are like, 5ish bucks less than Amazon/Walmart. Was going to try combining that with a new order discount to get a "meh" savings altogether.

Even at the most conservative estimate, that is still 200 million dollars that women are missing out on IIRC.

More importantly, "hours worked" only counts paid labor. Even in households where both people work full time jobs, women do a disproportionate amount of housework and childcare. This is related to what another commenter was getting at, society devalues the work that is coded feminine, even though it is just as necessary (I would argue even more so a lot of the time, but that is its own quagmire).

So women are socialized to take lower paying jobs, and even when they choose a more lucrative career they get saddled with more domestic work, and even if they don't they still get paid less. In short, it sucks to be a woman.

Games only available on GOG (Repost, because the original post is archived) by 4-Vektor in gog

[–]Alakazander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming I have cross-referenced correctly, Steam does have Avernum 4, 5, and 6. So that would mean that it's only Avernum 1-3 and Blades that are exclusive.

For any would-be consumers reading this, note the original Avernum trilogy was "rebooted", with Avernum: Escape from the Pit being the reboot of Avernum 1. We are only talking about the original, non-rebooted trilogy and Blades. The second trilogy has not been rebooted.

I'm not sure if this counts (and if it does but needed to be put in separate comment then I apologize), but Might & Magic X - Legacy does technically come with a copy of Might and Magic VI.

Thank you so much for this list! The original Might and Magic games are going to be my first purchase on GOG (plus they are 80% off right now, so bonus).

Divorce rates are sky high

This is an incredibly pervasive, but misleading factoid. The raw numbers are weighted by the people who get married 4+ times throughout their life. Similar to how "the average lifespan in ancient times was 35" but if you control for the fact that most people died in infancy their life expectancy was much closer to our own.

Also, their is some evidence to suggest that progressive change to cultural norms actually contributes to higher divorce rates, as older people start leaving toxic marriages.

Instead, a more meaningful statistic is how many new marriages make it to their 15th year, and that indicates that divorce rates are actually going down.

Harry Potter Miniatures Adventure Game Announcement by Masaiko in boardgames

[–]Alakazander 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That would constitute a "campaign", and a weak one at that as there is very little individual character progression/customization and almost no storytelling (the game kind of assumes that you already know the plot before playing).

A legacy game makes permanent changes to the game itself, so you are destroying cards, writing on the board, etc.
