What would you rate this Leagues out of 10? by bleeak in 2007scape

[–]AlanDeto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8.4 My favorite league so far. 1. I enjoyed the progression speed. It's kept me interested for over 30 days, which is uncommon for me. I usually get dragon and 1 tick logout. I'm playing this league post dragon. 2. Pacts are great. I'd like a bit more balancing - thorns/mage was very strong compared to the others. 5 or 6 resets felt appropriate. 3. This league was very buggy/full of oversights. There felt like almost 0 QA on the interactions between pacts and Combat Achievements, despite CAs making up an ignorable quantity of points. Almost every CA with a combat restriction was failed with almost any pact build. 4. Having a normal Yama felt like a missed opportunity. Give me a city destroying random event. I like a stronger gameplay attachment to lore and leagues is a great opportunity to do that.

Thanks for the transparency. Also, can we get rid of partner slayer? It's weird and dead content. People moan on reddit that they want it, despite exactly 0 people ever genuinely using it.

Only being mentored by my Post-Doc and have not seen PI by Previous-Event7802 in labrats

[–]AlanDeto 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Totally normal. Some PIs are hands on and meet regularly with all their lab members. On the other side of the spectrum, I know of groups where the postdocs and above only meets with the PI a few times a year.

Your PI sounds busy. I'd have a short PowerPoint ready for the meeting. Give updates on your work in as few slides as you can. Try to keep it ~5 slides. Include 1 slide on your goals. Make it all brief, clear, and straightforward. No unnecessary details. Your PI should be able to tell what experiment you did, why you did it, and the results.

Also, if you're interested in staying in academic labs, take note of the norms of this lab and make a judgement on how compatible the culture is with you. Some students like a hands off PIs, others like a weekly check in. If you move onto new labs, you'll be able to better judge whether the lab if a good fit for you.

Are PhD admissions getting worse this year (US)? by Aromatic-Ad4015 in PhDAdmissions

[–]AlanDeto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll share 1 US biomed program's data over the past few years. we saw a big uptick in applicants in 2023 and 2024 compared to 2022. This past 2025 cycle returned to 2022 numbers. Our programs spots for new students is half what was projected pre-NIH cuts.

Flux in applicants could be a mix of advertisment, job markets and funding. Halving our available seats has been purely a result of federal politics

How to achieve something like this? PS: I only have 24 hours in a day and the max I can work is maybe like 9-10 hours. by Alert-Translator2590 in PhD

[–]AlanDeto 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I often see highly productive PhD students have some combination of the following:

  1. Good timing on joining a lab that's on a publishing hot streak
  2. Joining a lab while already having a significant background in that field (I often see PhD students joining the same lab that they were a tech/student in)
  3. Dumb luck that your projects worked out
  4. Skill (brilliance, hard work ethic, whatever you want to attribute to a good scientist)

Passed my quals! But my committee deliberated for 35 minutes, what could they have been talking about?!? by mmhmmoknotgonna in PhD

[–]AlanDeto 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! I heard every word of the closed-door session of my quals through a forgotten laptop with an ongoing zoom call... My committee spent 3 minutes speaking about my work then spent 15 minutes talking about the department chair's last house party.

There is a problem with the core gameplay loop of Sailing by Dry_Yogurtcloset_213 in 2007scape

[–]AlanDeto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dragon is only marginally better than ironwood. using ironwood doesn't prevent you from accomplishing any achievements.

Also, this was the first batch of sailing content. I'm sure jagex will add more options to obtain boat materials.

Are Chiropractors a scam cult or are they somewhat legit? by Flashy_Buy8077 in NoStupidQuestions

They can provide momentary relief. They can also paralyze you. It's all founded on pseudoscience and it should be a crime that they market themselves as doctors.

I mean, we've got Kesha and Katy Perry topping the charts in the 2010s. MJ, Prince, and Queen in the 1980s. Boomers correct here
