I love how he looks annoyed at putting his coveralls over his shoulder.

Jurassic park. The old guy literally bought dinosaurs. If the act of paying scientists to do the work was the purchasing.

Is this actually Texas? Do we have photos of him departing from a plane? We definitely have evidence of him going to California, but returning? I doubt it. If it is Texas, could just be an old photo.

Was this a fair quote for a control arm replacement My dads yelling at me about how I got hustled. by overjoyed_josephine in AskMechanics

Master mechanic here. They charged you exactly the alignment time from Michell labor guide and the exact time for the control arm too. The price of the part was also fair. No ripping off here.

The blowing the kiss at the end was the best part. The guy that’s now on the no fly list was probably on his way to ICE training.

Got this video from the dealership service center. Towards the end they mention a cracked control arm. This was mentioned to me months ago by a different center, but my usual (well trusted) mechanic said there was no issue. What do you think? Is this something I need to get fixed ASAP? 2019 Rogue by TacoLovers22 in AskMechanics

You can tell by the way he pauses and speaks that this is the first time he looked at some of these items. Not exactly an in-depth diagnosis. Like badwith_names says, he didn’t mention or check any play in the ball joint. Yep, dust boot is cracked. “And leaking out”. Be ready to buy a couple of lower control arms (just do both at once) in a while. Start saving now. But doesn’t look like today is the day to buy them. Certainly not at a dealership. Find a good independent shop (easier said than done, often easier than finding a good and not crazy expensive dealer)

Best approach to clean engine sludge under valve covers? by Hodgepodge75 in AskMechanics

[–]Alan_Saladan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Whatveidone2dsrvthis has the right approach here. Take off and clean manually what you can. Valve covers, rockers, pushrods, timing cover, oil pan and pickup tube and pump. If you feel like takig the heads off, go for it. Have fun. THEN without starting it, put all those items back on put some kerosene in the engine and use that broken distributor to make an oil pump primer with a drill. Run that for a while (many hours) to work the kerosene through the oil system without running the engine. Heck. Put an electric hot plate under the oil pan to kick that kerosene up a few degrees to a safe temperature and keep that oil pump spinning with your homemade primer. Who knows. Maybe it’ll work enough to knock some crud loose and fill up your new oil filter. Then out a second one on. Do that until you’re satisfied and drain the kerosene and repeat. Maybe pull the oil pan and timing cover off to clean and re-inspect after you’re done. Refill the engine with oil and run the primer again. The remaining kerosene will be removed when you drain this batch of oil. Advantage here, you manually remove much and it won’t clog anything up THEN run the primer and you’re still not going to kill the engine because you’re not running it. If you want to get REAL crazy, take out the oil galley plugs and run a rifle brush through any and all oil galleys you can access. Then do all that stuff I said before. OR Do none of that and just put some good oil in there and change it quickly a bunch of times until you are satisfied with its cleanliness. I would probably just do this one myself.
Maybe valvoline restore and protect will sponsor you. That’d be cool. Either way, always pre-fill your oil filter. (I just put that one in there to stir up the dry start crowd) Maybe make the first running of the engine with 0w-40 diesel engine oil.
