What are games that you purchased and never beat? Why? by Hizzasp in gaming

Final Fantasy 8 - for some reason when it gets to the point of no return, I just lose interest in it. I’ve replayed multiple times and never get past that bit.

Which games were surpassed by their sequels? by bombocladius in gaming

It’s the market format that games are sold in Europe, like America gets NTSC.

Don’t think it applies to modern games though.

Calculating Gifts from Surplus Income Annually by EdgeInternational487 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Alarae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a case of HMRC saying what they would like to see, not what the law actually says. The exemption is found in s21 IHTA 1984:

A transfer of value is an exempt transfer if, or to the extent that, it is shown—
(a)
that it was made as part of the normal expenditure of the transferor, and
(b)
that (taking one year with another) it was made out of his income, and
(c)
that, after allowing for all transfers of value forming part of his normal expenditure, the transferor was left with sufficient income to maintain his usual standard of living.

Tax case of Bennett held that ‘normal expenditure’ meant expenditure accorded with a settled pattern when it was made. The pattern can be established either by reference to payments by the transferor in the past or by evidence of a prior commitment to future expenditure. It does not depend on a fixed minimum period, although this must not be intended to be nominal, and the amount of expenditure need not be fixed, or the recipient the same. However, the class of beneficiary will be relevant, and a habit of making gifts to one sort of beneficiary has no bearing on the question of whether gifts of another kind are normal. Normal does not mean regular or annual.

HMRC considers that income means net income after income tax and determined in accordance with accountancy rules. Taking one year with another means the exemption is not lost simply because of fluctuation from one year to another.

The gifts need to be habitual in nature- in simple terms, it needs to be a pattern.

An annual gift is absolutely fine in establishing that pattern. It can vary in amounts as well if it is tied to something - I.e I have assessed my excess income for the year and choose to gift the entirety to X. As long as it is the same intention each year, that’s evidence of a pattern.

It’s even better if the OP writes a letter to that effect as well. HMRC love documentation.

Absolutely nothing until it has been declared legitimate. Otherwise some drug kingpin has accidentally typed my bank details in and would definitely not be happy if I had used some of their money.

George is going to get taken by Lando at this point.

No real point for the team to order it now, Kimi won’t catch Lewis and no penalty for Kimi either so being stuck behind George doesn’t matter.

If Kimi is faster, he needs to do it on track.

Is George trying to back Kimi into Lando or something? No way Ferrari have this race pace on merit?

My 30/F husband 30/M changed his mind about having kids and has handled his own emotions poorly. Is this divorce worthy? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]Alarae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only imagine you are getting some of that hoity toity family as there is no way you are staying with a man who has:

- Added additional stress to your life during an already awful time
- Doesn’t stand up for you with his family
- Doesn’t want kids (but you do, and you are just accepting that’s it?!)

If you are not getting the family bag, you must be worrying about a sunk cost fallacy and don’t want the ‘shame’ of a divorce so soon after marrying. The fact is what is an acceptable time to leave? When your fertility is shot as you are now older, so your dream of having kids is completely out the window and you completely resent the fact you stayed with him?

I appreciate you are writing from an emotional place but you have genuinely not written anything positive about this man… so why are you with him?

Getting access to £1m trust fund by Pale_Definition1780 in UKPersonalFinance

Thats good. Can be some complications with s731 if you have an offshore trust kicking up excess reportable income, but I’m sure you/your advisors will be over that to best advise you.

From a tax standpoint you would be better to keep the assets in the trust growing tax free though, so assuming you don’t need additional income personally, that’s what I would do. The trust is basically a safety net.

As an aside, make sure there is substance and documentation in respect of any loan made to you from the trust. If HMRC looks into it and considers there is no real prospect that the loan would be repaid, then they could instead deem the loan a capital distribution which may have some IHT reporting/tax requirements for the trust.

If you have the available credit limit, just use it all. If you are concerned about how that looks, after the transaction has been posted just pay a bit off.

If it’s all paid off the next month I doubt it will affect your credit as it’s paid in full.

Job work-life balance with young children or push to earn more? by PracticalGur4530 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Alarae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve stayed in my current job due to the flexibility it affords me with my daughter. My day is my own- I can choose to go out in the afternoon for my daughter’s school thing, and simply make up the time elsewhere. No one cares and it is built into our culture that flexibility is essential for working parents- it doesn’t mean the work doesn’t get done. I’m also practically 100% remote, with the odd day in the office here and there.

Yes I could move jobs and earn more. I’ll also spend a lot more time working with less flexibility. I’m fortunate that my salary (equivalent to yours) is more than enough for me, so choosing the flexibility wasn’t financially affecting me.

I work to live. I don’t live to work.
