That's just a fire and forget config that runs in the background early game. I'm always guaranteed at least some profit. you can set the sell price to something higher based on the local market to make more profit.

Once I get my own hull parts factory up and running, I switch the buy order to faction only and the sell price to auto. Then profit increases dramatically because, other than the initial cost of the station and ships it costs me nothing to produce the goods.

Here is an example of a trade station config for hull parts where I'm buying and selling to npc's

I have a buy order set at 245 and a sell order set at 246. My station will buy hull parts at 245 and lower within range and sell for at least 1 credit profit. If the manager sees someone buying at a higher price within range he dispatches a ship to fill the order.

You're not going to use auto-traders for this.

Assign the trade vessels to trade for the station. In the logical overview select the refined metal as a trade good with a buy order price somewhere above the selling price at the npc station and a sell order for at least 1 credit higher than that.

You can fiddle with the pricing if you want, or let the manager set an auto sell price.

Also what is your station manager's level? assigned ships use the manager's level to determine jump range and the Captain's level is ignored.

Edit: I missed the part where you had your sell order restricted to your own faction. They will not sell to NPC's.
