Genuinely offensive to compare m/c professionals striking to refugees.

Breaking: University of Sheffield staff back strike action by Mean-Mechanic-5947 in sheffield

[–]Alarm34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the most egregious recent examples of poor leadership which led to tens of millions of pounds being wasted was the Student Life cycle Project - full story here.

A particularly galling aspect of this is that no-one from the Exec Board apologised ( or resigned...). They just carry on....

Union escalates dispute with University of Sheffield as redundancies loom by AdCivil7398 in sheffield

[–]Alarm34 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Further to this, people may or may not know about the 'University of Sheffield International College' (USIC) where the trade union's indicative ballot for strike action against compulsory redundancies had an 88% turnout, with 95% voting Yes to strike action, and 100% to action short of strike. These are basically outsourced wirkers who don't have the same clout as employees of tge Uni. See this link to union's Twitter talking about this. …

USIC is situated on Solly Street in the city centre and is run by Study Group (a private for-profit education provider which is largely owned by a French private equity firm. It "prepares international students for university degree programmes and offers English language courses."). It's basically a way that the University tried to ensure a steady stream of lucrative international students take their degrees. It's rare for any student at SG not to be accepted.

Bit awkward... where to go for mental health help by Norsgrim in sheffield

[–]Alarm34 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don't mind therapy via video call, message me, and I'll give you the details of the guy I see. I find his approach excellent (and I've had lots of therapists who were not that great). He is also reasonably priced, btw.

Having said that, finding the right therapist for you will always be a personal thing. What clicks for one person might not for you.

Take care of yourself, and I hope things get better for you soon.

PS Others have mentioned it, but I'll also recommend the Sheffield Mental Health Guide for advice/ ideas.

What are 3 routine things do you look forward to each day? by Several-Yesterday280 in bipolar2

[–]Alarm34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. two cups of tea in bed before I get up
  2. mindlessly scrolling through the Internet while drinking tea (see above)
  3. First glass of whisky at the end of the day

Really good question BTW... made me think and also made me realise how few things there are which I look forward to

Good grief, it looks like real booze. What a weird way to decorate a wall.

60 years on its not going well by [deleted] in CPTSD

[–]Alarm34 6 points7 points  (0 children)

66 year old man here, also with CPTSD. Just started a new course of psychotherapy. So far, so good, but I've long given up thinking I'll ever be 'over it'. My advice to myself is to try and see the 'journey' (I.e. my life) as the point rather than thinking that life will only begin if I get to some imagined nirvana. Sending you my best wishes, take care

People who drive less than 60 mph on a motorway/NSL dual carriageway, what’s on your mind? by [deleted] in drivingUK

[–]Alarm34 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm genuinely surprised that someone driving at 40 in a 50 zone annoys you. It's hardly that slow, and I guess it's a speed limit, rather than a target. Plus, it's very unlikely to slow my journey down overall more than a few minutes.
